A Ukrainian woman and her friend reported a motorcycle rental scam in Pattaya after discovering their rental bikes were stolen and taken across Thailand’s border.

The victim, Ms. Kateryna of Ukrainian nationality, along with her unidentified friend, presented surveillance camera footage from their motorbike rental shop and filed a complaint with Pattaya police.

They claimed that the customers who had rented their motorcycles failed to return them and allegedly took the bikes across the border to Thailand’s neighboring country.

Ms. Kateryna explained that on August 9th, the suspect, Mr. Santipap Sainon, rented an ADV 160cc motorcycle from her shop. He came with a woman and a young girl, rented the motorcycle for one week, and paid 4,400 baht, including 2,400 baht for the rental and 2,000 baht for the deposit.

The Thai's won't rent to a Thai's

She's going to lose a few more bikes if she doesn't stop this behaviour.

She needs to fit every bike with a tracking device

No help if the bike is in Cambodia.

How does she run a bike rental business? Married to a Thai?

It happened to my S-i-L.  Her car was stolen.  The thief (a woman with a farang husband) was 'arrested' by family members;  Dongtan police refused to charge her without payment of 10K.  The car owner (a nurse) had to pay off a bank loan for four years without a car!

Seems not?

Quite cheeky to report at police while in Jomtien a DJ without WP is handcuffed.

Usually a bank loan for a car would obligate theft insurance to cover the loan.

She was renting it out (I suspect this negated any insurance.)

Oh dear... they just have to do these sort of things!

She should have told the bank who gave her the loan to repossess it.

This was a common scam back in the day here on Samui.

Rent a car or bike, straight on the ferry and up to Bangkok never to be seen again.

Easy to stop though.

Now, all rental bikes and cars have stickers. If you take a rental on the ferry, you need a letter from the owner.

That's not the only way to run a business in Thailand btw.

Why...what was her insurers reason for not paying out on her theft claim?  What's the relevance of her being a nurse?

Owning a business of any kind by a foreigner is not illegal.  Where was it reported that she was working illegally as you both seem to be suggesting?

Not in AN posters' made up or embellished stories!  Or those with very relevant, initially undisclosed, aspects

Weekly rental 2400 baht, renting out continually for 1 year she could buy a new bike.

Big rewards you get big losses.

I see so many foreigners wanting to buy these bikes, makes sense I did the same thing, bought my first Mio from Mityon, on soi Buakhou back in 2002, the same salesman still works there, bought a few bikes from him, good guy.

I said "run". She's down the cop shop making a complaint on behalf of her business. That's working. Maybe not illegally if she has a work permit. And maybe legally she owns 49% of the business. Who knows?

I'll be setting a few more "Spot the deliberate mistake" puzzles so keep the corrections coming, Lou. Good job.

Absolutely, a French friend of mine and his Thai wife have a scooter rental shop, in the past he had 2 rented to Thais and never brought back, police weren't interested, this is in Chiang Mai. Never rented to Thais since then.

So for lack of not paying the 10,000 baht she chose to pay her loan for four years and not have the car?

Renting to thais is very risky.  That's a very known fact.

Do you know how much a nurse makes per month?  Would you have paid the 10K bribe to a crooked cop?  I thought so.

Previously unrevealed information: she was letting out her car (probably illegally to supplement her meagre nurse's salary.)

The car was in Cambodia.  The thief confessed to three counts of similar offences; two of the cars were recovered.

No it is not. This is Thailand and Thai's rent to Thai's all the time. Ever hear of a car rental firm, or renting an apartment? Stop painting with your wide brush. It makes you look racist and silly.

I just heard on the local radio station that the woman had a tracking devices fitted, this is how she knew her bikes were in Cambodia.

That was a thing 25 years ago on Samui
