A Facebook page called โหดจัง จังหวัดภูเก็ต (Hodjang Phuket Province) on December 7, posted photos of a foreign tourist walking completely naked through a hotel in Patong, on Thaweewong Road, Kathu District, Phuket.

The tourist, visibly intoxicated, wandered around the hotel without any regard for the many people present in the area. Hotel security staff later intervened, escorting the individual out and instructing them to put on clothing.

The Facebook post accompanying the photos included the caption:

“Drunk and stripped, walking boldly along Patong Beach. The ‘quality’ of some tourists under the visa-free policy in Phuket.”

The incident has sparked a wave of online discussion about the behaviour of some tourists visiting Thailand under the country’s relaxed visa policies.

Whilst Thais (and many AN readers) are happy to criticise these visa policies, Thailand would be totally stuffed without the foreign income.

Damn! I was hoping to see a female hottie in the story.

I am sure the Thais would cope.

Not Thailand, but some years back a work colleague mistook his Hilton hotel room door for his bathroom (yes, alcohol was involved).

As the door closed automatically behind him, he realised he wasn't in the bathroom. Of course he was stark naked.

Protecting at least some modesty with some hotel publicity he called reception from a house-phone in the corridor.

They had already spotted his bare butt on the CCTV and a (male) member of housekeeping was dispatched with a pass-key to let him back into his room.

It took a loooong time for him to live that one down :whistling:

Ohhh Thais and Thailand in whole is so terrible. Could it be the worst place on the planet?

Is it only the sick in mind who come to TH?

Reminds me of the time that after a heavy session in a beer garden in Bangkok after missing my connection to Samui, I took a wrong turn after going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and locked myself out of my room.  Had to go down 4 floors starkers and then wave my hand out of the lift door in an attempt to grab security/reception's attention without drawing too much attention from anyone else.  Going back up in the lift with the security guard with me standing there with with my just hands covering myself and this bloody lift music in the background was surreal and like something you only see in a movie.  The reception staff found it highly amusing when I checked out the following morning.

The waiter probably walked over and said, "So, how are you going to pay?"

This type of rude behaviour is not unique to Thailand. I recall many years ago sitting in Smith Street Mall in Darwin after completing a morning bike ride. We were enjoying a coffee and two naked male 'tourists' walked passed (It's never a naked female tourist🤔). These guys weren't drunk by all accounts and we supposed it was done as a bet. They disappeared around a corner and were later arrested and fingerprinted for indecent exposure. I was working as a fingerprint examiner for the police at the time, hence I was aware of the outcome. I wonder whether the bet was sufficient enough to cover their fine.

Another quality tourist. But with little to see, most likely nobody even flinched. Surely he's no John Homes.

So more strict visa policies will stop or reduce this type of incident?

The guy is clearly an idiot but I’m unsure why every case of people being an idiot = problem with visa policy?

How exactly would things be different if the Visa rules were stricter?

Let's face it, stricter visa laws would not have made a bit of difference. Next the man will be claimed to be heavily stoned on exotic flowers, another feather in the cap for the anti weed movement.

Isn't leaving your house without wearing underwear punishable according to the law?

If only TAT could stop their fascination with tourist numbers and could concentrate on creating up market entertainment, cafes, eateries etc and infrastructure then maybe the quality tourist will come.
