What do you do with all your free time these days?

Featured Replies

Past couple days, consolidation my Ext HDDs.  Lots of dupe files, from a few laptops.   Really need to do that on a monthly basis, instead of letting them sit way too long.

These are mostly 1TB drives, and except for 2, got them down to the small Sandisk drives.  Waiting for a 2TB drive to arrive today, and then everything, last 2 to moved over, will be on the small SSD drives.  Wife can sell the other big, older, slow drives.

Did you use a program to find the duplicates ?

Also not a good idea to stand the drives up like a book  although they are called Mybooks...as I found out myself  if the "book" falls over whilst the disc is spinning  it can cause total failure....of course when the heads are parked (not in use) they can survive shocks of up to 500g

Nah, just move one folder into same folder, as already sorted by locations, camera body and or lens, along with year.

Let windows sort the dupes, and simply delete.   Will still have dupes, as destinations (province & cities) are usually the best of.

Camera and lens are all of photos take with said camera body and lens.  About 4 camera bodies and 7 lens.  Along with phones & years.

I just typed a long reply, and it disappeared, along with above post, now in a new thread.  I think a mod moved my post, out of old thread.

With a house ,MIL's house ,  garden , car , motorcycle , wife and 4 dogs to maintain not much free time and what little there is is spent just relaxing.

The topic title seems a bit misleading. You start by asking, "What do you do with all your free time these days?" but then focus primarily on backing up and replacing old hard drives. While I understand that this could take up a few hours each day over several days, it doesn't seem to directly relate to the title. If this was something you spent endless hours doing, it would make more sense.

On a separate note, I use a couple of small 2.5" HDDs, each 8GB. They get the job done. Sure, SSDs are faster and more reliable, but I don't want to deal with an array of them cluttering up the space. For what I need, I'd require at least 8 of the 2TB SSD drives, definitely not ideal. One thing I noticed is that you’ve placed smaller drives and a router on top of the ventilation holes of your bigger drive cases. This doesn't seem like a great idea. You're blocking the ventilation, which could lead to overheating. Additionally, the smaller drives are absorbing more heat from the larger ones beneath them. This setup could result in poor performance and potential hardware issues, so it may be worth reconsidering the arrangement for better airflow and cooling.

All in all, I think there's great room for improvement in both your overall setup and the way the topic is presented. Why not call the topic: "Evaluating the Practicality of Drive Management and Cooling Solutions" because that is what you are really showcasing here. Meanwhile you are just ending up with a bunch of trolls talking about masturbation instead because of your clickbait title. Is that what you really wanted???

No ... wasn't my idea.  I posted in different thread, and mod moved my post,  to this new thread, not started by me.

All those drives are unplugged, and not in use.  Need to move files from 2 of them, to the new drive I just got, then the wife can sell 'em.

Something for me to do tomorrow.
