Tesla’s Sales Plummet Amid Musk Controversy, Marking Lowest Numbers in Three Years

Tesla’s vehicle sales have fallen to their lowest levels in nearly three years as the company faces growing backlash over Elon Musk’s political activities. In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla reported a 13% decline in sales, delivering just 336,681 vehicles compared to 386,810 in the same period last year. This marks the lowest sales figures since the second quarter of 2022. Analysts had expected deliveries to reach 372,410, according to estimates compiled by Visible Alpha.

Musk had previously assured investors that Tesla would return to growth in 2024 after experiencing its first-ever annual decline in deliveries. However, the company has struggled with public protests and consumer dissatisfaction, largely stemming from Musk’s political alignments. His role in advising President Trump on federal spending cuts, as well as his vocal support for far-right political parties in Germany and other nations, has contributed to a negative perception of the Tesla brand.

Sales in key European markets, including France and Sweden, fell for the third consecutive month in March. Meanwhile, Tesla also reported weaker-than-expected sales in China, despite the region seeing a broader surge in electric vehicle adoption. The company has also lost ground to competitors such as BYD and other Chinese EV manufacturers.

Following the release of the disappointing sales figures, Tesla’s stock initially fell by $5.23, or 2%, to $263.23 on Wednesday morning in New York. This continued a downward trend that has seen the company lose roughly 30% of its value since mid-December. However, Tesla shares made a sharp recovery after reports emerged that former President Trump had informed three cabinet members that Musk would be stepping back from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency. By early afternoon, the stock had climbed $14.81, or 5.5%, reaching $283.35.

Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities and a longtime supporter of Tesla’s stock, described the delivery numbers as a “disaster for the bulls.” He stated: “With the current headwinds for Tesla across the industry including protests at Tesla dealerships, violence seen at Tesla drivers around the country/Europe, and more Musk-related brand worries, this delivery number was a disaster for the bulls, with continuous negativity around the Tesla brand. We are not going to look at these numbers with rose-coloured glasses … they were a disaster on every metric.”

Tesla’s production was also affected by factory retooling efforts in preparation for the manufacture of the redesigned Model Y. In the first quarter, Tesla delivered approximately 323,800 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, while deliveries of other models, including the Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X, totaled 12,881.

The thing is he was one of the first ones producing EV's.

They were ok in the beginning but now other countries are making better and cheaper EV's

Plus the fact he is a little bit strange (ahum) makes for a perfect storm to crash this brand.

BYD offers a lot more car and features for a lot less money.

There are also other brands ,also from Europe that are catching up or bypassing Tesla.

My apologies to anyone who has invested in Tesla my comment of (GOOD) is directed at the man not the investors

Domestic terrorism by the left has certainly put some people off buying a Tesla.

I probably wouldn't want to be chased down the road by some blue haired septum ring wearing non binary bearded bloke in a dress threatening to launch a grenade at me because of my choice of car.

A few long sentences for these violent deranged leftists should stop them in their tracks. Tesla's are by far the best looking EV's on the road, much better than the Chinese tat with the weird names, although personally I wouldn't buy any EV of any brand.

Musk has illustrated in the political spotlight what an unpredictable and erratic individual he is. This together with his support for Trump has devalued the Tesla brand and devalued the company.

And this is Tesla preparing the ground for their actual Q1 results to be published on April 22.

Well that and firing tens of thousands of government employees, firing veterans, hamstringing veteran services, and Social Security services.

Cutting funding to childhood cancer research and other disease research m, slashing funding to Medicaid.

And more recently declaring social security is next on his list.

So Tesla sales declined, how did totl EV sales develop?

Besides sales in numbers, how about money? Was it a decline in spite of discounts offered or did they stick to their prices?

I hate to disappoint you, but Musk owns less than 13% of Tesla.

So you appear to celebrating the loss of investments of other people in an EV manufacturer due to left wing domestic terrorism.

It doesn’t disappoint me at all Jonny.

The reasons why Tesla owners are offloading their vehicles, are the same reasons the brand is being attacked, Musk and his political activity.

It’s for Tesla shareholders to decide if they want to continue with the business risks Musk has created.

Or deranged leftists attacking the vehicles of disabled owners.

Can you please provide your evidence that the people attacking Teslas are ‘leftists’, deranged or otherwise.

tesla makes ~ 30% profit from reselling, to other auto makers, the carbon credit. And that's pure profit with no cost of sales associated with it.

Decreased sales will have a double hit.

Not sure the brand can/will survive, unless the government somehow supports tesla with subsidies or a massive fleet purchase.

And they need a product line refresh, including the new Model SS.

MDS on show here again. There was a time when Musk was the darling of the left with his "environment friendly" cars. Now he's a racist and a fascist. The interesting thing of course is Musk himself said "I didn't leave the left. The left left me" an opinion which would be echoed by millions and was evidenced in the election.

Good. Excellent. Musk is a total social misfit, and is not wearing his wealth, nor his power lightly. Musk appears to have extremist tendencies. I am hoping he goes on one of his Mars missions, but we all know he does not have nearly enough courage for something like that. I have respect for his achievements, but zero respect for the small man.

He's a completely ridiculous man, the more wealthy he's become the more obnoxious he's become, the more arrogant he's become, the more self-righteous and the more insufferable. Trump made a tremendous mistake by giving him more power than he already had, and time will reveal what a tragic decision that was.

Boycott Tesla, don't buy anything that he is associated with, knock him off his pedestal, bring him back down to earth, try to knock some sense into his absolutely foolish head, and take some pride in doing the right thing and helping America.

I think it's just common sense.  Naturally a lefty would want proof that lefties are attaching Tesla's because when it comes to common sense, they have very little or none at all.

Surely finding billions in government waste IS helping America.

Decent run abouts they might be. But they are too <deleted> expensive.

Really?  You think boycotting a man who has satellites circling the earth is going to "knock sense" into him?  Good luck with that!

We can only see what his and Trump's agendas are over time. No matter that they are narcissists that think they're God, with billions, cheaters, misogynists and racists. What matters if if what they're doing will help us over time. Getting rid of waste is definitely a good idea, so time will tell. Alienating other countries is a definite mistake, although taking sheet from them is also. You can't knock them off their pedestals, as money is power, and some look at those with a lot of money as all good, which is a misnomer. Many who have attained such wealth have taken advantage of others in some way. We've had presidents who were unstable and immoral , and they've also helped America, so we'll only know what will become of the future in time, and we as individuals can do little but sit back and watch.

That’s a circular argument.
