A 22-year-old American tourist from Washington State has died in Phuket after returning to his hotel in the early hours of the morning, reportedly unwell and vomiting following a night of drinking with friends.

The young man had been staying at the Rabbit Hotel, located near the old bus station (Phuket Bus Terminal 1) on Phang Nga Road, alongside his girlfriend, a Myanmar national.

According to police, the American left the hotel on the evening before, to meet up with friends for drinks. He returned at approximately 04:30 on 6 April, visibly ill and vomiting. His concerned girlfriend immediately contacted emergency services, and he was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead.

The incident was formally reported to Phuket City Police Station at around 07:00 that morning. Police have since launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tourist’s death.

Investigators are currently awaiting the results of a forensic medical examination to establish the exact cause of death. At present, police have not yet identified any foul play in connection with the case.

Authorities have not released the man’s name, pending notification of next of kin. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok has been informed to assist with repatriation and further consular matters.

Alcohol poisoning? Bad booze? If the latter, investigate.

RIP.

When my friends ask if I have any advice for traveling in Thailand, number one on the list is "don't drink anything that comes in a bucket".

I hope we get a follow up after the investigation, but I won't be holding my breath.

How many of us here think.....there for the grace of God go I?

I remember, many decades (yes, not years!) ago getting comatose few times on cheap bucket booze. We were lucky then as there were nowhere near as many dangers. No methanol, no pills and dare I say it far nicer times.

Quite likely he was not drinking exactly what he was ordering, methanol etc can be lethal and when it comes to money peoples morals so often become non existent! Very sad for his family and friends! I hope forensics reveal the real autopsy details ???

Last night in my restaurant a couple came in to order takeaways, she had obviously been drinking and during the short time they were here she collapsed in my toilet, her boyfriend called an ambulance and she left on a stretcher barely conscious, you have to be so careful what & where you drink!

Nice friends, watch him drink himself to death.

You drink the drinks, you take your chances. The other side of this? About a gazillion people drank around Thailand that night and not a lot of them carked it. Not being frivolous about it but the odds are the things that kill you.

  Unpleasant comment .

They weren't aware that he was about to die , also, it hasn't be shown yet that it was the drunk that killed him

Youngsters frequently stay out that late , could be anything that caused him to die

I read the daily anouncements from 'Asean Now Daily News'.All seems bad ref foreigners killed or scamed in Bangcok and Phuket.

Been Thailand many times and never been above places (except hotel at airport), but travel north to places in the countryside. Never had any issues and people are lovely. Moral is, if you go to places where you know there are problems then expect the worse, or avid them.......... It aint rocket science

And yes, RIP, it is wrong this happened

Friends and girl-friend all I would presume were with him and therefore also drinking , so why did they now suffer same or similar symptoms ?

Agree on that one! I always take great care when drinking spiked drinks in Thailand, sometimes it is a bit difficult though when no one tells me they have been spiked.

His friends would likely have also have been poisoned. But we don't know yet, do we? Pretty sad for someone so young. "Partying".

early 20s is the age of ignorance as to such things, it doesn't necessarily mean lack of regard for life. It just means stupid. They accept being <deleted>faced as perfectly normal. I've seen it a million times, a gang goes out specifically for the purpose of getting hammered, and of course here you don't drive, so there are no legal limits, and you learn your lessons the hard way. I don't like being around drunks because of my experiences with my family's alcoholism. I don't like seeing people in a degraded state. I have better quality fun and experiences when I'm sober.

Drink bottled beer and make sure it is opened in front of you.

Could (and frequently does) have just as easily have happened at a fraternity party in the USA.

I am a tea bottler, never even one beer in Thailand the many years I was there. But, I was older. If I were in my 20's when I first went there this could have been me very easily.

Most likely methanol poisoning. But the autopsy should tell
