You must be a newbie. You certainly know nothing about the Thais to speak of, if you don't understand why Pattaya is the way it is. If you had been elsewhere in LOS during Songkran you'd know tha

  • Unfortunately, in Pattaya, it's not just a matter of avoiding street parties as the madness goes on everywhere.  What i really object to is throwing water/ice at motorcycles - this is extremely danger

It isnt like there is a shortage of wet bargirls to feed you Srai Grok as you lay in the reclining position in front of a bar, soaked and doing a mouth open seal imitation

You what ?

Iam out the front of the bar with the water canon full of chilled urine.

Imagine mixing your semen with water, filling a water gun with it and then shooting it at Thai girls in wet shirts. Mmmmm

You're right, that would be too much. Only pure urine!

As they do everywhere in the country!

What! Your first trip to Thailand?

As long as I can remember, the water throwing in the whole country lasts for 3 days. Now they have made it longer in some places and cities. It´s up to you if you want to engage and take part in the fun or not. However, it´s not your business if the Thai´s want to have it or not, and you have no place coming here and try to decide or advise them how to do.

But nowhere one week! Which is total madness

Suggestion to make it only one day for the sake of not losing business is like saying scrap the Christmas and New Year holidays as they are bad for business.

Not quite. I have yet to see people lobbing Christmas puddings at each other.

I have my opinions and have every right to freely express them, whether some clueless farangs like it or not.

How long does something have to occur before it is a "tradition"

Bars for example. Nobody forces them to engage in this madness and put barrels with water at their bars. But they seem to like to lose a week's profit.

Thay are making loads of money during Songkran.

When people get soaked in water, they don't go into restaurants, bars or clubs. And many avoid going out altogether! Either way, businesses lose a lot of money.

How is it possible to be so stupid and not understand this?

Maybe you dont understand the dynamics of public holidays. They are meant to givecpeople a break, not to work hatder.

Neither are Christmas sales in September.  But things change.

The current Songkran festivals have nothing to do with Thai culture. It's about time they clamped down and made Songkran for one day with real Thai cultures. My Songkran is with my wifes family and friends. The water throwing is moderate and the people are all happy.

Hot cross buns in January are a good thing though.

Its a significant holiday for the average Thai and time to celebrate. As for "they" the government promotes this widely as a huge tourist attraction and source of revenue as most tourist don't come and stay for the time at the festival and the revenue they generate to the economy is significant.

Terrible for the environment too, and water supplies etc, especially during hot season when many places face severe droughts...

Water throwing during Songkran should be banned, imo.

Kobe Don.

and for employed Thai's who only entitled to 6 annual leave days per year... the 5 day weekend is great for them to get back up country and spend the time with family.

Keeps the complainers inside.
Scared of getting wet.
while the rest of the country has a big party.

Loud music too, also upsets the complainers.

I have every right to say loudly and often that 2-3 days of this idiotic water throwing should be plenty.....Especially for Pattaya......

And for anyone who disagrees I really hope you get a bucket of cold water dumped on your azz when your going shopping or going out to eat...

it is very exciting game. we called it "drop-a-bike". once my friend scored 17 in a single day. very entertaining and educational for kids: "see why you should wear a helmet?" and other helpful tips. after all - it is his fault to drive a bike during Songkran, right?

Well Jose (apparently a Spanish name so if you are Spanish you'll understand).

Everywhere in the world there are "stupid" traditions.

For example in Spain;

Pamplona - the running of the bulls - most years someone dies or gets seriously injured not wet.

La Tomatina is a Spanish festival in Buñol - wasting food when people are starving.

If the Thais want to throw water (and call it a tradition) to attract tourists it's their business not yours.

With this week-long nonsense they lose more than they attract. It's up to them of course. I just laugh at their stupidity.

Madness only for you.

Do you understand what Jai yen means? If not, find out and then you start on a journey that ends when you understand why they throw a lot of water in Pattaya.

It's supposed to be a time of cleansing, community sharing and elders, but nothing changes every year, so it's really just a holiday to get drunk and hopefully not die while driving.

Just because you don't agree with with what the Thais do on their new year doesn't make them stupid but it does show your ignorance (judging others by your standards)

I think in a previous post you said you're entitled to have an opinion and express it - so you are but that doesn't extend to calling a nation stupid because you don't like what they do.
