Living in Thailand in your Golden Years, why Thailand.

Featured Replies

I recently posted something and realized most people here are actually in their 60's and over. Like wow, me too, actually.

So my question is, what was it that made that time clock click to and say " that's it, its Thailand"?

For me it actually relates back to my high school days. I had Thai classmates that we became friends. Sadly I've lost contact with them since graduating from high school.

After 30 years of limited sex in the UK I decided life was better here and just stayed ............

Only returned to the UK for a week to give all my stuff away, then returned with a 1 year Non-O.

They say " life is grand", your shadow followed you all the way to Thailand. May you be blessed with many more years to come.

Yes, and much less costly then Western behemoths who waste so much money.

Can you explain that more in detail. Seems to be an interesting subject these days on this forum.

Isnt it obvious? A 70yo can date a 40yo.

Yes. I can't imagine what he means.

But to the topic, if these are to be the golden years, then I'm here because I had all my bronze and silver ones here too.

You should know going by your personal experiences!

Don't know. 63 now. Here for 20 yrs already 😎 Way back then it was a mutual craving for adventure for me and my wife.

In all honesty, it's "A 70 year old can pay to <deleted> a 40 year old prostitute"

lived and worked around in EUR, Africa, Asia, Central America.  Kept a log of the good and bad in all - just anal.  then as retirement age approached, could continue working as a great job but then the difference between my pay per hour would be about 25 cents than just my retirement pay so I opted for retirement at 58.  Looking at the log book of assignments and doing a comparison, I noted that Thailand was number one in many categories so opted to come here over 20 years ago.  Best thing - no cold weather no snow once in 1955 only according to the Thai weathe bureau.  The cost of living here is much cheaper than the US, lower taxes, great medical facilities if needed, food is great with a wide variety available and the people are really nice and accept foreigners living in this country.  After more than 20 years of retirement here, I still love it as much as the first time I came here in 1972.  I do not plan to leave it unless for a short visit elsewhere.

Or a 70 yr old can afford to give a Thai woman a better life than she would have with most locals, and a lesser chance of being cheated on. The more money you have, the more women you can have. Nothing to do with age.

For maybe 10 years if your lucky.

Then rinse and repeat.

Sort of the same, and that repeat story.  On a whim, last minute diving trip, unplanned, and TH was off my radar.  Just too far, and nothing really special, except an Asian flare.

Phuket for a long week, 1st and only time I ever got a 'rental', and kept her 24/7 the whole time.  Dining, diving & smiles, on cusp of high season (1999), so not crowded, and seas where nice.

Came back following year & stayed.  No complains, 25 yrs later, and won't be going anywhere till the last bbq.  Another 5-10 yrs would be nice :coffee1:

I was sent here on a temporary work assignment 20 years ago from the U.S. Today, they laugh and say they forced me on the plane, kicking and screaming (which is true. I never wanted to come here). We couldn't find a qualified replacement in Thailand, so I stayed. Now, they can't get me back. Today, many of my U.S. friends are moving out here....abundance of quality women who enjoy being woman, cheap beach resorts, great food. Who wouldn't want to retire here? I did and have no plan to move back.

I remember those days, long gone. I was £8 on Easyjet from Liverpool to Amsterdam for stag weekend, then China Airlines to BKK.

First came for a mate's wedding in 99, regular visitor for a few years and came to live 2008.

The only problems with your story is you are still subject to US taxes and although the medical facilities are nice the quality of care is not, especially if something goes wrong.  Additionally, I am not so sure how nice the people are.  Think of all the Thais who have ganged up on foreigners and how many times you have been ripped off by over paying.  Also all the extra risks in everyday life due to horrible safety standards.   That said Thailand has many good sides.

I am good with snow and love skiing, but that is a personal choice.

Travelled to Thailand several times every year for work for over 25 years.  Even worked here for over a year.  Married a Thai woman 20 years ago.  Retired and moved here 7 years ago.  I love it here.  Is it perfect, no.  No place is.  I feel much safer here than back in the US.  My cost of living is a lot lower here.  With the different tax treaties my tax burden is much much lower.  I have property here that I could not afford back in the US.  In general, the people are friendlier here.  While at times the temperature gets extreme it still beats the snow and ice I lived with before.  Now I jump in the pool, relax, have a cold brew and not worry about things.

Yes, and if you are a thinker with some education one is led to reflect. What a difference, of course being raised American, I was bent out of the natural view due to being exposed to the sexual guilt trip brought to us via St. Austine. Thanks so much for that inheritance ... not.  One has to appreciate this thought of "easy women". Ha. I would recommend watching the scene in the movie "Noble House" where the difference in outlook regarding sex is well presented. We breathe, we eat ... do we have guilt? Why then would we have guilt over another natural need/want? That said, coming to Asia from the Christian sexual guilt trip west ... wow! Could throw in the difference also concerning age difference, importance of financial security but ... too long.

Spouse is Thai, otherwise would not have moved here in the first place in 2010.  But, the move has been great and we enjoy living here.

In my younger days, the cold weather and snow were fine, I can recall during Spain assignment, we would drive up into the mountains and sky/ sled and play in the snow, then drive home and the next day drive south to the beach and sun.  Great location for all kinds of weather.  And yes, taxes we as Americans know from the time we begin working and earing any money but realize too that is necessary to fund the government.  The medical facilities here run the complete gamut from govt (lots of the same doctors also are at private hospitals) and cheaper but I have heard from friends that they would just as soon go to the govt hospital as the service was fine and then you have Bamrungrat, which is internationally recognized and has a great reputation from people that worked for me that also had operations, birthings, and other treatments all praising the treatment they received.  I have been to Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai and have received excellent care/treatment as have my wife and daughter.  We also have used Bangkok Nursing Home with great results.  The people to me were one of the reasons I opted to retire here in Thailand.  I first came here in 1972 and speaking Thai, I have never had any problems at all with the people.  I do realize that being able to communicate with them one on one about any subject just about makes them seem more interested in asking me questions and just getting along with them.  I have never been ganged up but that may be because I don't hang around the type of place where that might happen as I don't go to the bars, don't drink alcohol nor smoke dope.  I have lived and worked in well over 20 countries around the world and find Thai safety standards well above many other places.  I know all about traffic woes here and poor driving habits of many locals but while I might seethe within, I have never had any road rage actions by me or anyone against me.  I worked here over the decades for about 7 years, and then retired here over 20 years ago.  I still consider this Paradise and life is great for me and my family.  My younger daughter is 21 and has had a great education at the CM interantional school, graduating speaking, reading, writing, and even teaching 4 different languages (Thai/English/Chinese/Korean- korean was self taught and she has passed at the highest level possible on the Korean Government proficiency test given around the world).  The International school actually taught her to love studying if that is possible!  She goes off for her junior year as an exchange student from Chulalongkorn the number 1 Thai university to one of the top Korean Universities in a couple of months as this term ends. If they could fix the air pollution problem here then that would be great.  Having lived around the world, it would be difficult to find any place with the greatest variety of tasty foods as is available here and is pretty inexpensive too.
