Thai Court Orders Ex-PM Yingluck to Pay 10 Billion Baht in Rice Scheme

Featured Replies

I expect that whoever helped Thaksin to escape jail will oblige once again. Yingluck, what fake illness would you like to have in your VIP hospital suite?

  • So what happened to all the money when all the rice was finally sold.   Where did that go to I wonder.

  • Watch! Land deal. Rice pledging scheme (remember Joseph and his technicolor coat) was sound but failed to take into account currupt Thais. How can she be held responsible for others who stole??? Maybe

Its time this devisive family should be held accountable for the populist policies than win them votes but cost the country dearly.

For those who want to do a deep dive into the politics of Thailand's rice policies:

"Overview of Rice Policy 2000-2018 in Thailand: A Political Economy Analysis" https://ap.fftc.org.tw

To date no Thai government has meet the challenges to rice price sustainability.

  • "What Thailand needs is the structural transformation that moves large excess supply of agricultural labor into no-agricultural sector which has higher productivity." ditto

But given decades of Thailand's national reputation being based in part as one of the world's top rice producers, can any Thai government be willing to such transformation?

I'm sure her family can easily pay by stealing a little bit more from Thailand.

Better to pay some 10 M Baht than to go to jail.

10 M might be not significant for the Shinawatras

Haha, big brother probably has to bail her out (if she ever really has to pay that). According to Google, her net worth is 'only' US$25 million... 😆

I'm sure she can borrow dads neck brace if required

I feel warm inside, every time I see her picture somewhere...

And make that payable to who exactly?

All the poor rice growers that lost money, I bet.

Didn't the Thai government at the time spend several hundred billion Baht on the rice pledging scheme? That's why Loong Tu staged his coup in 2014, he fancied getting his mitts on some of that lovely lolly wanted to save the country from imminent bankruptcy, lol. So why fine her a mere 10 billion Baht, surely a hundred billion Baht would be more appropriate?

LOL! Must be so relaxing for the Thai people to know their ruling family always have their well being in mind what ever they do! 🤣🤣😆

Number one she won't be liable for paying that money unless she returns to Thailand, number two this will hopefully prevent her from returning to Thailand, and number three if she does return to Thailand the Army will let her off scot free. Always remember one thing about Thailand, the Army is above the law, any and all laws. They are beyond corrupt they are beyond compromised, they are desperate for power, and they are the ultimate power. Almost.

That family is in total denial of their criminally corrupt empire.

When her brother sold the telecommunications  business in 2006, he received $1.7 billion that was tax free.  Then somehow both of his children received $650 million each.

Investigated by the RD and cleared.

Thailand continually makes itself look stupid on the world stage, you cant charge a former PM with a mistake that cost millions, if that was the case every ex PM and President around the world would be in prison, they all have to make decisions for the better of the country, some work , some don’t, there’s no proof she personally profited from the rice scheme and we all know she wasn’t qualified to run the country in the first place, just like the current PM isn’t qualified to do so.

How can any leader make any major decisions if they know they are going to be locked up if things don’t work out  ?

That's OK then....

There was me thinking that the whole family was bent as a nine-Bob note.
