Thailand Eyes Concrete Wall Solution for Cambodian Border Tensions

Thailand is considering building concrete walls along its border with Cambodia to prevent future cross-border intrusions. Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan, a former deputy prime minister and defence minister, presented this proposal. The plan targets disputed areas where recent military clashes have sparked concern.

The proposed walls would span contentious regions in Thailand's northeastern and eastern provinces, including Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, Buriram, Sakaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

These provinces have witnessed recent clashes over the past five days between Thai and Cambodian forces, primarily in Sisaket's Kantharalak district and Surin's Panom Dongrak district, near Cambodia's Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.

The recent skirmishes resulted in the tragic loss of 12 Thai soldiers, with some casualties occurring even after a ceasefire agreement was reached, reported Thai Newsroom.

Additionally, approximately 138,000 Thai civilians have been displaced from affected areas and are yet to return home due to safety concerns, despite the ceasefire remaining fragile.

People view the concrete wall proposal as a peaceful, long-term solution to enhance security and stability along the border. While it aims to prevent further escalation, the situation remains delicate, with the potential for renewed conflicts hovering over the region.

The Thai government continues to assess the effectiveness and implications of such a structure in maintaining peace and security.

I think it's incorrect to call this idiot a dinosaur. Dinosaurs were smarter. As for this "People view the concrete wall proposal as a peaceful, long-term solution to enhance security and stability along the border." what people would this be? Long term security and stability would be to have two non-corrupt civilian governments not ruled by the military in both countries.

"Build the Wall" catchy slogan.

It would be a lot cheaper to use GPS to eliminate the disparities between the belligerent's chosen mapping systems than build any wall.

Getting them to agree and accept any losses of land that would affect both parties, not so easy.

I'm wondering how they'd decide where, exactly, to build the wall.  Without setting it all off again.

Exactly. Prawit and his army buddies would place it where THEIR maps say is the border. The whole idea is a non-starter from an atrophied brain.

And what outcry will there be about blocking visitors from seeing the ancient temples, etc?

Of course, there will be a few "holes" in the wall to allow government approved criminals to continue their activities.

I wonder if it was a suggestion from Tru  , sorry, from the US president.

I can imagine Trump offering Thailand a better trade deal if one of his company's get the contract to build the wall.

Didn't this all kick off again with a senior Thai military man singing the Thai national anthem in the Temple "Cambodia"? Or am I mistaken? If I'm correct then this incident was the cause of death both Thai and Cambodian.

Thailand could include building the wall in incentives for trade deal with US. I'm sure Trump knows someone who could build the wall, and get Cambodia to pay for it...

Thai media has cited that a group of Cambodian tourists sang their national anthem at a temple, and the military told them to get back on their bus.

Does it really matter? He is not long for this world, I keep waiting to hear of his demise, he looks half dead already.

Build a wall all around the country....It is better to prevent drugs smuggle, human trafficking, illegal immigrants, escaping politicians, waterproblems and influence from other countries.

You are suffering from some strange bias.

IMO the current "problem" stems from the lenient border enforcement for Cambodians (and Thais). I am not sure if a wall is needed, but Cambodians should have to clear immigration before entering Thailand, anyone caught bypassing the normal channel would be processed according to Thai law. Border Casinos/Brothels on the Cambodian need to be put out of business.  Border mafias exist and do well they are probably one of the root causes. (I am living within 10Km of the border.

Doubtless, there will be ATMs in the wall in templey touristy areas😆

I would advocate having a "neutral demilitarized" zone everywhere there are disputes over the boundary which may include archaeological sites.  These "zones" would be shared equal zones and allow tourists from both sides to visit with upkeep and maintenance shared equally .  A joint administration would oversee these zones.

Ask Donnie how difficult it is. He doesn't and will not finish his border.

And 800 km wall between Cambodia and Thailand?

A piece in harmony is cheaper.

Doesn't matter they'll use sub-standard re-bar, cheap cement built by China Railway.

It'll collapse in months.
