Funny old world.  Between threads about war & the struggling economy, we get a boring vlogger talking about British food. 🤷‍♂️

Well, at least there’s one positive comment in here. But honestly, this thread more than most really showcases the depths of grumpy, miserable-boomer energy that occasionally bubbles up on this forum. How bleak do some people need to be?

I’m only surprised we haven’t had the inevitable “I didn’t come to Thailand to eat Western food” comment yet - or some tired remark about her looks. Give it time, though...

Western food and British Food in Thailand - there's plenty around and a lot of it is excellent - Thailand really is a foodies paradise for all types of cuisine.

Hahaha

This reminds me of when I was on cultural exchange in Soviet Union in uni. Everyone was moaning about the food except one guy who thought it was just fine. Good even.

We all made fun of the guy until someone pointed out that what he ate growing up must have been at best on par or even worse than the Soviet canteen slop

You are that guy

Absolutely not.

And which SEA cuisine better? 🤣 Please rattle off your top 10 of that county as well

Egg, chips and beans. Note the homemade chips, none of that shoestring European/ American rubbish.

I prefer beans on a mutton pie (being Scottish).

Chips must not be thin abominations.  These are a good size.

The Sunday carvery. An excuse for overweight, pot bellied men to eat bland, fattening food and gain even more weight. Genius.

You really are a depressing, sad, petty, unpleasant little man, aren't you?

About 10 years ago a friend and myself decided to find what we thought was the best full-english breakfast, mainly in the lower Sukhumvit area of Bangkok. The Chequers Bar in Soi Nana came out top, and what was the Queen Victoria pub in Soi 23 came a close second, I think we sampled 10 places.

Jools was one of the few places where you could get the British gem of Toad in the Hole. Served with baked beans or Onions and gravy.

They say every village has its idiot - and sometimes, that idiot goes missing. Naturally, you'd expect to find him in the village of missing idiots. But even that village is missing its idiot….    You are that guy !!!!

Miserable people exist in all countries not just USA.  My mother was one of these bottle half-empty people, always about what she did not have, how bad everything was, and how everything was better in the past. She has now passed away to go and harass Satan.

Around the back of the original Villa in Bangkok, soi 33 is it?, there are at least four places doing a good Sunday roast, all competing.

There's little problem finding good English food in Thailand and you can easily make it yourself, as most cities have the ingedients available somewhere. However, if you are a lazy Gen Z TikToker, then doing anything for yourself or being oraganized must sound like a life-threatening situation or at the least a micro-aggression.

🍽️ Beans on Toast — with Ant Defense Engineering

This may just look like a humble plate of beans on toast,
but the real star here?

The white plate.

Large, flat, and bright enough that even the stealthiest ant can't mount a surprise attack.

Picked mine up at Global Home — because in this climate,
defending your breakfast is just as important as making it.

After all, nothing ruins a British breakfast quite like an ambush from the insect kingdom.

FTFY

Possibly people who have been here years and like what they were used to from time to time or a lot of the time.

Ever seen Indians or Chinese in London eating jellied eels or pie and mash.?

Contrary to all the negative comments here I'm just envious I can't find it in Thailand at least where I live. Maybe in Bangkok but I never go there. So I can only look at Julia's photos and dream. Well done Julia.

Try Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 in Bangkok, where the Royal Oak is the standout for an excellent Sunday roast.

Reminds me of my trip to Rhodes Island, 35 years ago. It was a 3 week all-inclusive targeting the UK working class . We were only 4 days into the trip and the complaints started rolling in about the food. By the time Sunday came along, all that was discussed was our afternoon  trip to a restaurant serving a British Roast. For many, the highlight of their Greek  trip was the outing to the restaurant seving British food. I'm sure there are few Brits on this forum, who if they they were completely honest with themselves, have never really left the Ol Blighty (smile).

Did you and KhaoHom brainstorm that during your weekly idiot council meeting back in the village?  :whistling:

Screenshots from @awaywithjuliaa TikTok video

Homesickness strikes on Sundays without a roast, but one British expat in Thailand has found solace in a surprising locale. Julia, a TikTok creator known as @awaywithjuliaa, has captured UK expats' hearts with a viral video showcasing her quest for authentic British fare abroad.

Living in Thailand hasn't dulled Julia's cravings for an English roast. In her latest TikTok adventure, she invites viewers to join her pursuit of the perfect Sunday dinner, hoping to compare it to those back home in the UK.

Setting the scene from a quaint restaurant with outdoor seating, Julia’s enthusiasm is contagious. "I’m so excited; we’ve ordered loads of food. The only reason I came here is because I’m missing England so much," she shares.

Her journey starts with a classic: fish and chunky chips, accompanied by Heinz gourmet malt vinegar. “The first dish has arrived; look at that,” she exclaims, praising the flavourful, golden chunks.

The culinary tour continues with an impressive Toad in the Hole, featuring a giant Yorkshire pudding packed with mashed potato, peas, onions, and sausages. “Wow, that looks unreal. Julia remarks, "I got the gravy, yum," as she marvels at the generous portions of the dish.

The highlight is yet another oversized Yorkshire pudding, this time filled with roast chicken, crispy roast potatoes, carrots, and cauliflower, prompting Julia to declare, “Thailand does it better than England.”

Her video, cheekily captioned, highlights the allure of Thai roasts, claiming they’re “10X better and cheaper.” With over 57,000 views and 100 comments, the clip resonates with many, including expats long deprived of their beloved Sunday rituals.

Viewers expressed their envy and anticipation. “Food looks banging for the price; have fun,” one enthused commenter noted. Another chimed in eagerly, “I’m coming in August; I can’t wait!”

Julia's culinary journey has gained significant attention on TikTok, showcasing a unique blend of cultures. For British expats, the promise of enjoying their homeland's classics in an unexpected setting offers a comforting taste of home.

Foodies intrigued by Julia's adventure might just find themselves joining the pilgrimage to Thailand, eager to sample roasts with a refreshing twist that promise both nostalgia and delight.
