A former boxer doused two Malaysian tourists with thinner and set them on fire outside a Major shopping mall in central Bangkok late on 7 August. The assailant was quickly restrained by bystanders at the scene.

Police at Lumpini Station were alerted to the violent incident near the mall on Ratchadamri Road, Pathumwan district, around 22:00. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Mr. Warakorn Pubthisong from Sa Kaeo province, was found with the thinner in a 1.5-litre plastic bottle and a lighter used in the attack.

The victims, Mr. Ong Yik Liang, 26 and Ms. Ken Siew Sian, 27, both Malaysian nationals, sustained burn injuries to their bodies and faces. They were rushed to Police General Hospital for treatment and are now reported to be in stable condition.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the suspect conversing briefly with the victims before they separated. The victims later sat on the mall steps when Mr. Warakorn approached, poured the thinner over them and ignited the liquid with a lighter. The two victims were saved by bystanders who intervened and extinguished the fires and subdued the attacker.

A Chinese tourist, who was approaching the area at the time, reported hearing shouting before witnessing the horrifying scene. “I saw a woman on fire, people ran to help, trying to put out the flames,” she posted on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu. She later shared footage of the aftermath, which has since gone viral.

During police questioning, Mr. Warakorn admitted to the assault but denied any prior dispute with the victims. He cited severe stress from unemployment as a motive. Previously a boxer, he had recently lost a job as a security guard and was struggling to find new employment. He reportedly had not eaten that day, which compounded his distress.

Tests showed no presence of narcotics in his system. Authorities have intially charged him with grievous bodily harm.

Investigations are ongoing and further charges may follow, with the Malaysian tourists expected to provide statements when their conditions improve.

You leave your home in the morning and assume all is good in the world. Then this? How horrific. It is likely the lives of those two will never be the same.    Hope the creep gets locked up

Thailand is safe for tourists?

These seemingly random attacks on tourists/foreigners in Thailand appear to be increasing in frequency, or is it that they are now being reported, whereas they were not before?

Yessir, We find ourselves in a strange world from that which we grew up in.  first it was guns, then cars, now knives and fire.  No matter the weapons, seems mentally the world is going crazy at least to me.  I thought the worse it could be was a few years in the VN conflict but that was minor compared to what innocent people are facing daily all around the world.

Yes, Thailand is quite safe. I’ve been living in Bangkok for seven years, and it is MUCH safer than most places. Is it 100% safe? No. The attack described here is horrific. Sadly, there are crazy, horrid people everywhere. But I dare say fewer in Thailand than most other countries that I’m familiar with.

Indeed. The concept of representative sample is lost on the average, statistically innumerate, numpty.

What sort of person does these things.  He has obviously gone out armed with the thinners and lighter, he just looking for innocent victims, he cannot claim he lost his mind it was premeditated

Wrong time, wrong place. I hope these unfortunate tourists make a full recovery both physically and mentally.

Good observation. The fact that he had enough money to pay for his transportation to the mall and pay for thinner, makes his story of "poor liitle me, I'm streesed out, I haven't eaten for a day"  look like pure BS. The fact that he chose 2 innocent foreigners, who absolutely had nothing to do with his prdicament, speaks volumes. In his perverted little mind he thinks setting 2 inferior foreigners on fire, the courts will go easy on him. Set a hi-so Thai on fire he may face the death penality, IMHO, this individual should be charged with premeditated murder. I'm glad this was shown on Chinese media which, I  hope, pushes the Thai authorities to charge this reprehensible individual with premeditated murder

Eye for eye.

The way punishment to be.

Groundlessly  making  the innocent suffer, must suffer in the same way.

Lucky  so*: here in Thailand; no more than getting beaten by the wardens in jail but no more than that.

If in the land of Sharia Laws, will be grilled as that thing did to others.
