August 12, 2025Aug 12 Popular Post Is there a shop in Pattaya where I can buy a weatherproof UK flag to attach to a small pole on my motorbike? The reason will sound crazy (to some)!! Although I've just retired (getting my UK pension), I have decided for the moment not to return to the UK (as I previously posted in the UK forum), because renting property seems rather difficult etc. Instead, I will return to teach again in Myanmar and to continue my educational charity work in the Inle Lake region 🙂 From 12 years of previous experience of riding my motorbike in Myanmar, there exists a real risk in the countryside that I could be mistaken for a local and shot at by trigger-happy soldiers! Previously, I have ridden in the countryside without my full-face helmet, so that soldiers can identify that I'm not local. I'll be teaching in Shan State and I want to also fly a UK flag on my motorbike, (this might make soldiers more keen to shoot a Brit, based on Burmese history, but I'll take that chance...) I'm only in Pattaya for a few days, so concrete information where I might buy a suitable flag (and maybe a flak jacket) is appreciated!

The press-gang truck pulled up right next to me and only stopped when they realised that I was a foreigner! (Local Myanmar men don't go outside after dark in case they are press-ganged into the military...)

Get a Rainbow or Palestinian flag, they're the flavour of the month at the moment. 🌈😂 Sadly, Australia flags are in short supply, they had a few idiots burning them on the Harbour Bridge recently. 🇦🇺 I've got a few bulletproof vests lying around the house if required.

Contact the online seller. Depends on where the seller has distribution warehouses. We've ordered on Lazada and received packages in under 24 hours. Easier to print one and get it laminated. A photography store will be able to do that. Take the file on a thumb drive.

August 12, 2025Aug 12 When I was supervising an American contractor working for a Pakistani client in what was formerly the Federally Administered Tribal Areas in northwest Pakistan, my security was paramount and for my daily field trips I was urged to keep a low profile and don't attract attention like wearing a baseball cap. For their part, the client provided me with a brand-new white Land Rover, two armed, uniformed Pakistani militia guards... and an obnoxious Baluchi driver. Talk about a target? Stuck out like the proverbial dog's balls! I visited the base camp of a Chinese contractor working for the same client in the area, and I noted that all the staff, Chinese and locals alike, were dressed like locals. So I stopped using the Landy and armed guards, got shot of the Baluchi driver, dressed like a Pashtun (without the AK-47 of course) and travelled around safely in the back of a Toyota pickup for my two months. When I worked in Sagaing region of northwest Myanmar back around 2018, I used 125 cc motorbikes to get around the dirt roads, same as the locals, and carried a square-tipped machete in a plywood sheath strapped to my hip under my pahkahmah, like the locals. My advice to the OP is dress like a local, blend in and don't mess with any flags. And don't be tempted to buy Kevlar here either, as the Thai authorities classify it as a war weapon. If they find it, you will be arrested. Good luck on your Myanmar re-adventures.
