I read some box wines are actually decent.

The original (or possibly second generation) box wines were ok when they appeared in the UK back in the late 80s and I believe Oz has a long tradition with them. These were not fruit wines however.

Same snobs that won't drink box wine probably think good wine has to have a cork.  Go figure.  Having more money than sense and on a blind taste test, probably wouldn't be able to taste the difference.

Many 'good' wines now have screw tops as I am sure you are aware.

Blind tests - Depends what you are comparing them too and what your taste buds are like. As others have said everyone's taste is different. As a general rule I would expect many to be able to pick out the 'fruit wine' and one costing over say 700 baht a bottle unless you don't normally drink wine.

PS - that's not to say that there aren't drinkable and more traditionally tasting wines under that price.

Used to drink wine quite often, but rarely in TH.   Had a nice local winery back in Philly, USA, area (Brandywine Valley).   Did the Napa, CA thingy a few times, late 80s, surprisingly mediocre.  Think I sampled most of them.

There was one restaurant at Udon Thani, very nice, and had 'free flowing' wine during one of the weekdays, and I was a regular.  House was decent enough, and shame they didn't last long, as one of the best restaurants there.  Little pricey for the Lo-So expat community, and they didn't support it at all.

Visited a couple wineries here, TH, and I'll be kind, and just state, they were 'unique' 🍷

True, generally speaking, although a few cask wines can be suitable for BBQs. There are/were a few Aussie cask/box wines that were reasonable, but why drink poor/fruit wine when there are some reasonably priced wines made from grapes, and as OutofLondon quite rightly said......"It's a fallacy that poor quality wine is ideal for cooking".
