Foreign Tourist Fights for Life After Patong Hotel Plunge

A foreign tourist was left battling for his life after a shocking plunge from a Patong hotel last night under puzzling circumstances.

The alarm was raised at 6.36pm on August 18, and Patong Police swiftly responded to the scene on Phra Mettha Road. Emergency crews from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation joined Deputy Investigation Chief, Police Lieutenant Colonel Somprasong Labaisat, in the rescue effort.

Upon arrival, responders found the man lying unconscious yet alive, suffering from multiple broken limbs. “He was unconscious but had a pulse,” the police confirmed. Medics from the foundation provided immediate first aid before taking the injured tourist to Patong Hospital. His current condition remains unknown.

Investigators are now racing against time to unravel how the man ended up in such a critical state. Initial reports provide scant details, and authorities have not yet determined if the tourist was a guest at the hotel or simply visiting.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Somprasong commented, “We are working to establish his identity and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.” Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel and surrounding area to retrace the tourist’s last movements.

Hotel staff and potential witnesses are also being interviewed in a bid to piece together the timeline leading up to the fall.

While no evidence of foul play has emerged, police have not dismissed any possibilities. The vicinity around the hotel was temporarily sealed off as the investigation continues.

This incident comes on the heels of a similar tragedy when a Polish tourist plunged from the fifth floor of a condominium in Phuket’s Kathu district on May 3. The 34-year-old reportedly lost his balance after standing up, leading to his fatal fall.

Phuket has recently been marred by several disturbing tourist-related episodes, prompting ongoing concerns about visitor safety, mental health, and crime involving foreigners in Thailand’s popular tourist hotspots.

  • Thailand the hub of too low balconies???

  • You might consider that the hotel actually can be on the other side of the fence.   Yeah, or the hub of foolish foreigners that complain over low railings on balconies without looking and car

Yeah, or the hub of foolish foreigners that complain over low railings on balconies without looking and caring for their own safety.

No, Superman who has arrived too late.

Yeah, that´s true. I missed that, but looks strange, as hotels usually don´t come with wooden shacks. 😂

Another “balcony” statistic.

It happens rarely in other countries, as here in Thailand it seems weekly in the news

True, and the only thing it shows, is that people are not aware of their surroundings. Do you really think that a country with rather short population, will change their construction principals and technique just because there are taller foreigners that can´t take care of themselves?

'Flying' tourists is not a new thing. I've been in Thailand 20-years. Numerous reasons, depression, lost love, lost life savings, grudge payback, etc.

Short population? Maybe in the last century, but not any longer.

Ok if you see 171 for males and 159 for females as tall, up to you.

It doesn’t really take Sherlock Holmes to work this out as in all other similar cases, it involves a probably drunk, foreigner and low balcony rail, and that’s normally it in my opinion

Guess if you live in the impoverished areas you run across more shorties.

Since I moved to a more affluent area, I'm amazed at how tall most are.

So still need to work on the details to get those Dr Watson credentials then?

Yes as Thais are generally shorter than farangs, thus the different building rule for railings

Low balcony railings and zebra crossings are the bane for foreigners but foreigners need to take stock of their own safety not relying solely on the authorities to do so.
You are solely responsible for your own well being. Common sense needed as in any situation.

As others have already commented, ol boy looks like a BIG guy ! Lotsa vodka, dancing around, head over a***s over the knee high railing.

In a nut-shell Yes.

Pattaya is the World Capital of balcony jumpers though. I have been to every part of Thailand Northwest, South East  I can speak Thai (very badly).

I have been to Phuket a few times. I am a long term BKK and Pattaya resident. Living in Orlando now.I hate, hate hated Phuket! It was one scam after another as soon as my boots hit the ground.D

Have no urge to get any of that. seems like you are living in a fantasy world, though

True, I live out in the sticks. However, I have everything I need arounds me, and everything else I can make or order. People here are not generally shorter than average in Thailand. The fact is, that the number I gave you, comes from a credible source online and are stating the facts. If you see a few tall persons, does not mean that the average is changing. So, welcome to reality!

That's precisely why you'll never catch me on a balcony, given my 190cm stature.

The only leap I perform is from the wardrobe directly onto the bed. It`s called the "Swiss Mountain Jump". You find it in any Kamasutra book😂😉

And overweight tourists, judging from that photo.

Those low balconies in SE Asia: rain water, a late night out, early morning drowsiness, ...... too many reasons why they can harm us.

O yes I forgot.... always blame others.. no responsibility in whatsoever in Thailand

Your source captures the average height across Thailand as a whole.

In less affluent regions, poor diets and limited access to nutritional resources often result in stunted growth. Conversely, individuals in more affluent areas, with better nutrition,  are more likely to reach their full height potential.

Nutritional disparities are a longstanding public health concern in Thailand. Initiatives led by the Thai Ministry of Public Health and supported by international organisations like UNICEF and WHO have aimed to improve childhood nutrition - especially in underserved areas - to reduce stunting and promote better health outcomes.

Additionally, Thailand has seen significant improvements in average adult height over recent generations.

A large-scale cohort study of more than 86,000 Thai adults born between 1940 and 1990 found that mean heights increased by approximately 1 cm per decade - this alone is a clear indicator of improving childhood conditions.

Urban-born Thais benefited more: urban men grew 0.5 cm more per decade than their rural counterparts, and urban women 0.4 cm more per decade.

Breaking it down by birth cohort, individuals born between 1940–55 averaged male heights of 166.3 cm and female heights of 156.2 cm. By the 1986–1990 cohort, these averages rose to 170.3 cm for men and 159.0 cm for women - gains of nearly 4 cm for men and 3 cm for women over that half-century.

The urban–rural divide remains. Urban-born men in the youngest cohort were 6.4 cm taller than the oldest rural-born group; urban women were 4.3 cm taller.

Additional evidence supports these trends. Male military conscripts aged 21 - sampled from 1972 to 2006 - showed an increase from about 164.4 cm to 169.2 cm: nearly 5 cm gain over 35 years, with most growth occurring after 1990.

TLDR ??? - Summary... Your comment is rubbish - Welcome to reality !

Shorter balcony's in cheaper hotels is an issue in Thailand, as is general safety. That said, I was as at good hotel recently and the balcony (Glass) on the 14th floor came up to my chest - Obviously newer hotels are built to more stringent regulations.

Terrible repeated incidents.  Maybe a mandatory safety film should be shown on incoming flights just before landing.

Oh my God! You did it again. Research is your life, right? But, that must mean, from 1990-2025, only 0,7 cm for men and nothing for women in 35 years, right?
