Suvarnabhumi Expands: Doubling Passenger Capacity

Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs, is on the verge of a significant transformation. Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) has unveiled an ambitious master plan to double its passenger capacity, targeting an impressive 120 million annually. This bold initiative aligns with AoT’s strategy to keep pace with increasing global travel demands.

The extensive plan, which is now 70% complete, is expected to be finalised and presented for approval by October. It hinges on constructing a new South Terminal capable of handling 55 million passengers each year, alongside a fourth runway. The decision to scale down earlier expectations from 150 million passengers reflects a move toward more realistic, sustainable growth.

"The new South Terminal's projected capacity will rival major airports like China’s Chongqing," said AoT’s acting president, Paweena Jariyathitipong. "Ensuring operational feasibility and convenience is critical to attracting airlines."

Meanwhile, the 12-billion-baht East Expansion project is progressing through governmental channels. With expectations of construction commencing in early 2025 and completion by 2030, the project aims to increase the current passenger capacity from 65 million to between 70 and 80 million. This adjustment acknowledges a slower recovery in Chinese tourism, which has affected projected growth rates.

Additionally, AoT aims to modernise its baggage handling system with a 3.9 billion baht investment, enhancing efficiency by automating the linkage between the main terminal and Satellite Terminal 1 (SAT-1). Presently, inbound luggage is transferred manually, leading to delays.

In tandem with Suvarnabhumi’s expansion, Don Mueang Airport is also eyeing growth. A 36.8-billion-baht plan for its Phase 3 development is underway, seeking to increase capacity from 30 million to potentially 50 million annually. This includes a proposed Junction Terminal, designed to boost connectivity with the Red Line railway, further integrating the airport with the wider transport network.

Both projects underline Thailand's commitment to keeping its aviation infrastructure competitive. With these expansions, the airports aim to accommodate future passenger growth more effectively, thereby solidifying their status as key players in the global air travel sector.

In summary, the expansion plans at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports reflect a clear strategic direction to enhance capacity and connectivity, ensuring that Bangkok remains a pivotal hub in the ever-evolving landscape of international aviation. This significant investment in infrastructure not only addresses immediate needs but also prepares Thailand to remain at the forefront of global air travel in the years to come.

They'll also add another 1.5 bathroom stalls.

And Italy & Spain & France already having anti-tourist riots ...

Never mind, send them to Thailand.

I hope the expansion also includes additional parking areas. Difficult to park at peak times.

Doubling the capacity for tourists who are no longer coming?

They already have capacity issues when checking passports.

Better lower it because who wants to come to the land of scammers and so on.

They're investing for 20 years from now, so they don't get caught flat footed.  Not a bad idea.  It'll take many years to put the plan in place.

More CO2..... in the future, you will be able to choose between forest fire tourism, floods and heatstroke!

'Cept that the additional CO2 is actually encouraging plant growth and greening things up in many places.

A single minded point of view.

There is a lot more to an airport's capacity than tourists.

Dubai got it wrong and had to build another airport.

The new Satellite Terminal 1 is still not very busy. Must still have a lot of capacity left.

Than still they don't have a good vision... Indeed it will take years to do something but in the meantime the sea levels are rising and there is real threat that Bangkok will be flooded.. And Suvarnabhumi is known as swampy.. what will happen???? In fact all investments now are waste of money.. They should find a new safe location and built a complete new airport near the new Capital, just as Indonesia is doing for years already

Start with cracking down on all the cheats in their airport shops that are selling at ripoff prices...

The Southern expansion is part of the original masterplan. It is basically a mirror image of what is already there, flipped and positioned to the south - accessible from Bangna-Trat side. So it will have its own arrivals, check-in, immigration, parking buildings etc. It was actually a well thought out and designed plan from the very beginning although someone tried to meddle with it a few years ago but thankfully that got canned. This is how it should be.

The right side of the picture is what exists now.

And ultimately with four runways, again planned from the beginning. Look at Heathrow struggling for 20 years to get a third one approved.

Lots of greening up required to offset the burning. Also, these days water is more of a limiting factor for plant growth

So Suvarnabhumi is hoping to triple its capacity in 5 years. Meantime it wants to build a large new international airport at Rayong and link it by high speed rail with BKK and DMK. So how many passengers is all that combined? And where's the research that backs up such hubris (Rayong)? And why would international airlines want to fly to Rayong? Just for Pattaya-bound passengers? rRght now, even with improved/approved airport international safety upgrades, international airlines are slow to signal a return to BKK (particularly European and US carriers), which one assumes is a business model decision.

A bit overoptimistic i think when tourist numbers are down lets spend some money logic

Despite my own skepticism about this (also mostly about passengers), I would agree that - in the long run - Bangkok makes more sense as a cargo hub than expensive Singapore which is, pragmatically, a bit out of the way in any case, or HK for various geopolitical reasons.

They need to watch the airliners at their check-in counters that always have far to long queues. Each airliner should be forced to have sufficent counters open for check-in as to minimise the queues. Same for the security screening.

You can check in online and just drop your bags off these days .

No need to queue to check in

So in actual fact Suvarnabhumi has not expanded. There are PLANS to expand it. Correction, 70% completed plans to expand it.

i doubt I shall see any change during my lifetime

I think that's key.  They need to start the project(s) before some other entity casts greedy eyes on the land for industrial estates.

Pity they didn’t start 15 years ago. Often times the place is a zoo currently.
