In my case, yes. I am not a vegan and I eat eggs, cheese and other dairy products produced by free-range livestock.

But you live for the attention/abuse though, yes? No other reason a vegetarian would post on a beef stew meat thread. You did not even offer an alternative for the beef. 

 

In any event, I could be a vegetarian in India.

As is your opinion.  Best to stay out of places you dont belong. Oh, boiled vegetables suck. 

Stopped eating beef in the UK around 1990 because of BSE. It's similarity to Kuru in New Guinea was obvious. Banned everyone else in the house from eating it. Lamb tastes just as good. Do not miss it; may occasionally have a burger as a last resort, but here in Thailand we use pork and make our own burgers. Once eating out in Thailand at an expensive restaurant i tried Wagyu - it was half gristle.

 

Also beef is not good for the environment - uses more water and causes more pollution than other protein sources.

I assume that beef in a stew comes from a dead bovine, hence the reason for my comment. Many obvious alternatives including, inter-alia, potatoes, carrots, turnips and onions. BTW I have better things to do in my old age than seeking  attention or abuse. Have a nice day.

It is cheaper for a reason.

 

I now buy my beef from TKM Food Solutions......some very good Aus/NZ steaks.

Go Wholesale currently have local beef shin for 200 baht per kg or chunks of low fat beef meat for around 235 baht per kg. The cheaper cuts are in the chicken section. Their chicken and beef prices often undercut Makro considerably. Often you will see restaurant owners go in to take up the whole stock of chicken pieces because of this.

Here is where I start to encounter cooking problems. Trying to find decent beef that has a high fat content is hard here. The fat is what makes the flavor and gets the meat tender as it stews. 

So I have made the choice to go with pork in my stews here. Butts or shoulders are full of fat and make a really nice stew. To compliment the fact that I have use pork instead of beef I go with good ingredients. I prefer to use whole new potatoes. Hard to find but Foodland often has them. I also pick up pearl onions at the same time. Usually use carrot and long beans as well. But they are added during the last hour so they are tender but dont turn into mush.  Here is a big pot I cooked up a few weeks ago.

Thats a nice looking stew, and the Pot looks pretty good as well.

@marin Beef shin will work in a stew. I used it as braised beef for some Chinese style dishes. 

If that doesn't suit, you can find 'soft' beef at Ratanakorn Market for around 220 baht per kg. You will see fat marbled through it. Helps if you know for what to look. I use that for dishes such as Redang, where you want the meat to melt in your mouth. Shin pieces can sometimes be a bit too strongly flavoured, so better for more robust stews.

I usually whack up a pretty decent stew in a crock pot , secret is worcestershire sauce and cumin  - pork ? nawwwwwwww ......

I've seen the Biff at Rattanakorn market but the unrefrigerated setup and flies is a hygiene issue for me - other wet markets have showcases now where meat is kept

Buy a piece of chuck from Big C, the cheaper the better, dice yourself.

Put in a slow cooker; with your stock and veggies of choice; and cook for 10 hours on the low setting. The result is deliciously tender meat with a very tasty gravy.

Good cuts are wasted in a stew, as is pork. Both dry out. Fat is flavour.

A good slow cooker is about 700 Baht, also from Big C, and is money very well spent.

I buy a large chuck from the local market, marinate overnight, sous vide it.  Very tender, cut into 1.5 inch slices and can eat as steak. Use leftovers for stews, bbq and sandwiches. Not much fat at all.  Sous vide machine is the answer.

Yes, I worked in India one week every other month for a few years.
