Thailand Enforces Stricter Controls on Medical Cannabis Use

Cannabis is now under tighter control in Thailand, with the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine announcing new restrictions. The use of cannabis is permitted strictly for five medical conditions: insomnia, chronic pain, migraines, Parkinson’s disease, and anorexia—only with a doctor’s prescription.

Director-general Dr. Somlerk Jeungsmarn emphasised that patients must provide prescriptions from licensed doctors or pharmacists. Cannabis buds are available only through state-approved dispensaries, stopping any chance of unregulated sales. Additionally, prescriptions cover a maximum of 30 days, requiring regular medical evaluation for continued use.

To maintain rigorous oversight, the authorities have launched the Cannamed Connect platform. This innovative tool will monitor applications for cannabis prescriptions, track distribution and patient usage, and register all licensed cannabis outlets. The platform aims to eliminate any loopholes, ensuring cannabis is dispensed appropriately and responsibly.

Strict rules also apply to sellers. Cannabis must be sourced from certified farms, ensuring high quality and safety standards. The law completely prohibits online sales, vending machines, and advertising of cannabis products. This initiative is part of an effort to curb misuse and regulate the burgeoning cannabis industry in Thailand.

Just three years after legalising medical marijuana, Thailand is taking a bold step forward. They aim to balance the therapeutic benefits for patients with insomnia, chronic pain, and similar conditions against the potential risks of misuse. The market is tightly controlled to ensure only those truly in need gain access.

TThe health authorities are keen on establishing a clear framework, preventing the recreational use of cannabis disguised as medical therapy. The clear-cut conditions and approval processes ensure cannabis remains within medical ethical standards, comforting those concerned about rampant or improper usage, reported the Bangkok Post.

Thailand’s cannabis regulations are drawing attention internationally, as many watch how effective this measured response is. By controlling this field with precision, Thai officials hope to demonstrate leadership in managing medical cannabis responsibly, ensuring patient protection without stifling the potential benefits.

In summary, the new regulations mandate a tightly controlled system with strict licensing and usage monitoring. The government's strategic decision reflects its drive to responsibly harness the therapeutic benefits of cannabis while addressing broader societal concerns. The entire initiative serves as a robust model, focusing on healthcare integrity while navigating a challenging landscape.

Come on every recreational dope smoker in the world could have these symptoms indefinitely....

So to cut to the chase....

They want people to be free to smoke all the weed they want..

As long as the weed is bought through a few government hand picked connected growers who will be reaping massive profits....While Somchai grower starves...

This is all about profits for the few... Its not about quality products or anyones health at all....

I pass a weed shop every morning at 04:30 on my way to the park to get some fresh air and exercise.

The young man who I saw at that hour stopping at the shop which was open must have been suffering so much from something.

Insomnia. Clearly.

Three of those conditions are easily faked and can't be diagnosed.

.. My knees are playing up, I can't sleep and I have a terrible headache doc.

I needed a Med Cert for a driver's licence. Went to a clinic, the receptionist filled it out at the counter, took it into the Doctor's office to sign. Came back with it, collected the 100 baht and I left. So much for medical supervision!

It's absurd and then there is the 30 gm limit. It's not like your parkinsons or chronic pain is going to disappear in a hurry. There doesn't seem to be any talk of limiting THC which is a positive.

The true measure of this is gong to be where the doctors are that write the scrip are you going othave to go to a hospital or are shops gong to be like the one at NANA that has a doctor next door that does medical exams.

Going to be interesting to see how many shops close and what happens.

Lucky for him an obliging doctor was working the night shift,to get his prescription.

Not a fan of cannabis but regardless...This is a joke. Every year i have to provide a med. cert. to renew my work permit. Just walk in the clinic/hospital, the doc. Signs the paper, i pay, im gone, done. Won't make a single difference to obtain a cannabis med. Cert.

Transportation of controlled substances is not an option. Prison is a lot worse than the aggravation of the new laws.

Did have a problem buying 3 pre rolls the other day, no questions asked.

Under no circumstances should you "just throw a months worth in my suitcase" I should ask "what are you smokin?"

Are you flying to Thailand? Are you having any stopovers? You could be arrested if any of those states where pot is illegal. Maybe fly into Malaysia or Singapore just for amusement.... a month's worth could be enough to be prosecuted for trafficking.

Is this a troll? I smoked back when getting busted  could be 5 yrs in prison. I see this and think "This guy needs to layoff the weed. It has made him an idiot"

Where did the poster say that he was on a scooter, or are you just stabbing wildly in the dark?

I guess that I can argue with that.

Its 11pm on the east coast of the USA and I can sleep. Guess Ill fire up the bong

So what does this mean for kratom? Or cbd? Or any of the cannabis compounds? What about psilocybin which has shown great promise for depression when other antidepressants have been inadequeate? Will this research continue? This is a bad step back for medicinal herbal compounds that have less side effects than traditional pharmaceuticals!

Even if it is legal in both the departure and arrival countries, I don't think you want to put cannabis in a suitcase during international travel.  I don't know about the legalities, it just seems like it could go wrong.

It would be helpful if the retailers were required to show the Government's licence to sell the product, and the expiry date of the licence, at the entrance to their shops.

I should imagine that money will matter rather a lot if you are stopped at the airport with a month's supply in your suitcase!

No you can't really argue with that or any topic about Cannabis.

You say you never used but have a very strong opinion about it.

I suggest you should try it first and then come back with an opinion.

You will be able to buy all you need here in Thailand.

Legal or not ,the market and the supply are not going to dis appear.

Money does not matter, how many kilo's do you want?

I like the “medical” word in the neon sign. Reminds me of “safety first” sign around construction site. 😂😂😂
