No spare wheel provided with a new car

I just bought a Toyota Yaris Cross from a dealer and was suprised to find no spare wheel.  The dealer said, I want one, I have to buy one!

Is this normal?  She also said, "don't worry", if you get a flat tyre, just call the Toyota SOS and they'll come and fit a new one.

Was thinking about the cross but at an extra 200k over the basic Yaris it would take about 10 years to make that saving on petrol at the distances we drive. Did you get a manual in Englsih? we never did but they swore they posted us one

B/S...my tyre had done 30k and was 2 years old....completely shreaded no kit would ever repair that.

After 6 - 7 flat tires in Thailand on my motorbikes 250k or so on the thai roads, this is the most common reason for flat tires in Thailand.

Never had a flat tire on my car for 120k

Do they come out at 3 am in Nakhon Nowhere? I can imagine calling and getting no answer

Most insurance do have road assistance, and if not, better get one.

Still if driving around in the rural districts, just a simple plug set can save the day

Been going from Pattaya down to our property in Trang virtually every month for the past 10 years or so....100 round trips 2,000 kms/ per trip...and this was the first time in all my driving both here and the UK.....45 years driving experience that I have ever had a blowout.....guess I was due one? fortunately no one injured damage minimal.

Most incidents with tires today, you can fix with a plug plug set with co2 cartridges and glue, considering you do follow recommended change of tires by usage and age.

If you walk out the door in the morning and your tire is flat, that works.  If you're driving down the road at 120 km/hr when your tire goes flat, chances are it's going to be shredded by the time you pull over.

Would not have done us any good a couple of months ago, driving in the dark went into a pothole covered by water, ripped the tire apart. Luckily very near home

Nice try........5000 miles/year.......I'll be long gone.

This is the new trend for all cars now...no spare wheel. Usually due to the fact that most of the new vehicles are EV or hybrid on which the batteries take up space. They usually supply a kind of aerosol with a tube called the "anti puncture kit". In case of a flat tyre, you tyke the aerosol that has a tube with a valve that you insert in the tire pressure valve and spray the product in. It's of course very basic and temporary - just enough to slowly reach the nearest garage.

The problem with a flat tyre change is that once replaced, it will be a new one when the other 3 will be used. Thus it alters the equilibrum in having the 4 tyres get worn, more or less together.

A good tip a garage gave me was to change positions of the tyres annually by putting the front tyres at the back and those at the back, in front, This makes them wear in somewhat of a balanced way.

You’ll be sorely missed, truly. Though if we’re both still around in 2037 I’ll certainly remind you, count on it.

Cost saving/cutting tactic, nothing else. Many car companies are doing this.

After contacting Bangkok via website I got one (for Yaris, no cross).

Next time, just buy one of these cars.

This way, you always know where your spare is hiding.

It's all a money saving exercise..befor you got a spare wheel matching the other 4, then Renault introduced emergency wheels and now you get nowt...$70 a pop on 3 million units, you can sew why

Or your car cost $70 less...

That works okay most times.  But what if you're out in the sticks and the nearest station is an hour (or more) away?

My other concern with the "no spare" trend is that, even if you buy a spare, there's no accommodation for it without taking up a lot of space in the vehicle or spending even more money for one of those nifty tailgate mounts.  (Or did they include that spare tire hanger under the rear bumper like my older Toyotas, and just leave off the spare itself?)

Thats the very point of 'no spare'...  To give you more storage space.

Are you really thinking of haning a tyre of the back of a Toyota Yaris ?

-------

I've changed a tyre here in Thailand - No thanks, not again - I was pished wet through with sweat...  Call out a recover company and get them to to do it.

Out in the sticks a lot - then you can make your 'own choice' ot have either  a 'space saver spare' or a 'full spare' and keep that in your boot / trunk compartment.

None of this is a show stopper - things have evolved, boomers still complain about anything.

Our car has a 'tyre fix kit' that 'should' get us to the nearest tyre shop...     As far as a tyre completely shredding... how often does that really happen ???   30 years of driving, only ever had 3 flat tyres...

A spare is not something that even entered my thought process when getting a new car last year because its rather an irrelevant and moot issue....

If its something that bothers an owner - its not exactly hard to get their own spare.

You didn't really think about that reply did you?... (rhetorical)

The reality is...  a spare wheel is not an essential item....  if YOU think seats and doors are not essential items in a car you can't be helped...  though of course, you are be facetious to make a point, very poorly so.

When was the last time you changed a wheel ?

I did so about 7 or 8 years ago - huge mistake... I was sweating profusely and completely parched....

A far better idea would have been to quickly use a DIY tyre repair kit and then drive to B-Quik and get a new tyre...

In 30 years of driving I've had 3 flat tyres - hardly worthy of concern....

... The saying 'Farang think too mutt' is clearly exampled by some in this thread !!!!

My daily runs 35" rugged terrain tires.

Average 1 per year exploding and shredding on the 7 motorway.... Roadside service is great to get it sorted.

Something is very wrong with that...        allowing pressures to run too low ?

You're being gaslighted.  The point of no spare is to save the manufacturer a few bucks on the COGS.  Personally, I like the spares that hang underneath the car just in front of the rear bumper, taking up wasted space.  That's where Toyota put it on mine, but that was a few years back.
