Phuket MP: Revise Visa Policy to Curb Tourist Misconduct

Thailand is no longer attracting that many people from the West, for a dozen very good reasons, and the vast majority of tourists are now Chinese, Russian, Malaysian, Indian, and Arab, and I don't think very many of them are wealthy. So, the industry continues to hurt. One could argue that these are relatively low quality tourists, in terms of the amounts of money that they spend. Sure you have a few wealthy Russians and some  wealthy Chinese, but most are lower to middle income and don't spend alot.

Thailand suffers from an impossible level of smugness and arrogance, and a persistent belief that they are truly the center of the universe and the best thing in the world. They don't have a clue. Sometimes it feels like the fact that the nation was never colonized was a leading factor in this hubris and inability to see the world for what it is. The severe inability to adapt, improve, and reform, has hurt their prospects.

It's all good. Far less tourism would make Thailand far more comfortable for the tourists who come, and for the expats, and would likely lead to better attitudes amongst people in tourism. They simply would need to be creative in figuring out ways to make up for the lost billions in revenue.

This process will not be reversed until the authorities wake up and make some sacrifices such as lowering luxury taxes, lowering wine taxes, cleaning up the air, making the highways safer, allowing more private air travel, helicopter travel, high-speed trains and alternatives to the totally choked and extremely hazardous highways.

And now they have invited in the Bratva, by opening up the country to all Russians. Quantity over quality only works if you are selling $2 items at a swap meet.

Yeah, right! If the pesky tourists have to pay for a visa, they will surely behave! 😆😂    Waiting for the news in a few months' time: "Fewer Chinese tourists, as they travel to visa-free des

Really ? I didn't know that was the case, howeverI was referring to changes starting long before Covid.

I know it from my own experience in buying flights in and out of Thailand. Post Covid prices are much higher as the airlines adjusted the supply/demand equation.

As always blame others for your shortcomings. Why tourists don’t misbehave as much in Singapore? Enforcement of law and order. When young tourists arrive here they see lawlessness, chaos, breaking laws by locals with police in sight. Mix that with a sense of adventure, booze etc you get misbehaving.

How does he know any of the people involved in the incidents were on visa free policy?  It's just as likely they were on visas.  Nonsense spouted again.

I thought we hadn't heard the no visa absurd nonsense for a while.  Must be coming towards high season and they will all start saying it now.    Because they know they'll be busy and can put it back to 30 days again. So, predictable.

Blaming the visa while these extreme issues are centered all around Phuket but not seem to happen in other places, in that way, is kind of pathetic. It shows that the real issue in Phuket is massive illegal ownership, foreign gangs, corruption and more, that fails to deal with tourists in general.

Like a visa would change anything to what Phuket attracts, or they will play cry me a river again when it is emptied out like during covid. Same for different issues on other islands, it's all about the lack of governing and policing while massively corrupted.

First Phuket blames the weed, now it is the visa's, yet they are the only place that has these problems to this degree. Then when it is too quiet they will blame covid, water shortages or the economy again.

Not to forget to charge them double for hotels, sights, transportation, etc. - That will show them! 😆

Thailand already does that!

The visa rules do not prevent or propagate anything in this respect.

If you have 10 tourists, chances might be one to ten.
If you have 1000 tourists, chances might be 10 to 1000
If you have 40,000,000 tourists (as claimed previously), chances might be 5,000 to 40,000,000

The larger the crowd, the less the percentage BUT the higher the absolute number.

To counter that, strict law enforcement is the name of the game, let them face the bench, lock 'em up or throw them out of the country - like most other countries would do.

Neither visa rules nor happy smiles prevent the wrongdoers, crooks, thieves and cross characters!

A westerner foreigner needs a wage of 50,000 a monthwork and get a work permit but yet they allow internet workers in this country that can't even afford $100 room to rent.

The average broke internet worker is still 50% richer than the average retiree here. Maybe get a bit more real, even a sucker job pays like 2k usd a month today, at the end that is just 12.5 dollar per hour.

Thailand needs to diversify so they can stop selling their b***hole to tourism.

Education, skills, innovation, political stability.

Until then they don't have a lot of choice.

Yes, and what happened to the Yellow and Red Card policy?

More than Visa modification, increase monetary penalties and jail times significantly.  Require an extremely high monetary fee to avoid jail and leave Thailand.  Utilize the Visa bans.   People understand loss of freedom and loss of financial acquisitions.

That would mean spending money on 'the poor'... Not going to happen anytime soon.

Visas have little to do with those who cause the problems. It’s what happens when they’re in the country. Maybe they assume Thais don’t like confrontation, too stupid or they can pay their way out of a situations. Maybe access to alcohol or drug  has something to do with these events. Either way it’s time this behaviour won’t be tolerated any longer. Immediate expulsion and a ban from Thailand should be introduced. Once in effect and enough idiots get kicked out the message will get across loud and clear.

Chalermpong argues that while the policy has significantly increased tourist arrivals and revenue, it has simultaneously welcomed "low-quality tourists" whose behavior negatively affects the country’s reputation.

So, Lung Tu – former premier Prayut Chan-o-cha – was right about that Thailand needs "quality tourists" rather than quantity...:whistling:

A question for whoever gave this a thumbs down. Do you seriously believe that cannabis is a narcotic ? If you do you are seriously mis-informed, or just plain ignorant.

Probably both, with a serious sickness in the head.

When I first arrived here in the 1960s foreigners were a mix of well- behaved American soldiers on furlough from Vietnam, and relatively well-to-do visitors from Europe and North America from where it used to be expensive to travel to Thailand. Then cheaper budget flights became widely available and consequently the character of visitors changed, markedly.

My wife joined me in 69 at UT.  One way from MCO to BKK was #1,200.00.

Thailand can't know those who have a record for violence. Suppose countries exchanged data that points out visitors who have criminal histories?

How many tourists would Thailand lose? Someone arrested for shoplifting is not a physical danger to others.

Could it be a good idea to increase fines then kick people out? Treat them impartially and fine then 20 or 50k then send them back.

Stricter screening measures are proposed to preserve Thailand's tourism reputation.

bearing in mind we are continually being reminded that Thai tourisms reputation is in threads, why would anybody wish to merely "preserve" it  in its current sorry state,   The  MP should set his goals a bit higher and maybe consider trying to improve it.

At the end of the day its not the tourists that are responsible for Thailand's reputation    the responsibility for that rests squarely with Thailand

Banning whole nations via visa restrictions is utter madness.

They are good at reporting  crimes promptly but only rarely do we get to hear what punishments are handed out to the perpetrators

Probably because the consequences of bad behaviour in Malaysia are much more severe, and less likely you can buy your way out of it . And they don't have the vice that attracts a lot of the riff raff

Exactly. How do you know that a well dressed quiet man is not going to turn into a raving lunatic after trying some puff and too many drinks ? One walk down Bangla or Soi 6 turn some men nuts. But a load of * information for Tourists to Thailand * might well help ! Send direct to all embassies and newspapers. Radical.
