Police in Pattaya successfully rescued a 20-year-old woman allegedly held captive by a Chinese gang at a hotel in Jomtien after she was accused of embezzling 200,000 baht. The operation followed a plea for help from the woman’s brother, who alerted officers to her location after receiving a message and GPS coordinates from her. Officers from Pattaya City Police Station swiftly moved in, locating the hotel room and freeing the victim unharmed.

The incident came to light on 8 October 2025, when Mr. Bird, a Pattaya resident, sought help from police after his younger sister, Ms. Pimnipa, sent a distress message saying she had been abducted and detained. Police coordinated an urgent search of hotels in the Jomtien area and managed to pinpoint the exact room where she was being held. A tactical team then entered the premises and rescued her safely.

According to Ms. Pimnipa, she had responded to a Facebook post offering money to people willing to open “mule accounts” used for financial transactions. Struggling with financial difficulties, she decided to inquire further and was soon contacted by individuals who arranged to collect her from the entrance of Walking Street in South Pattaya. She was then driven around Pattaya and Si Racha in several vehicles before being taken to the Jomtien hotel and confined.

She told police that after handing over her bank details, a group of six to seven Chinese nationals seized her phone and ATM card, then took her to withdraw money without allowing her to keep any of it. Later, the group accused her of stealing 200,000 baht and threatened her with violence if she did not admit guilt. They blindfolded her and kept her locked inside a hotel room under guard.

Ms. Pimnipa managed to trick her captors by pretending to need her phone back to contact a friend about opening more accounts. Instead, she secretly messaged her brother for help and included the hotel’s location, enabling police to act quickly. During the rescue, officers found one Chinese man guarding her and detained him for questioning.

The suspect has so far refused to cooperate, and police are holding him for further interrogation. Investigators are now working to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the gang believed to be involved in the kidnapping and fraud operation, as investigations continue. Authorities said the case highlights ongoing concerns about transnational criminal networks exploiting people through social media scams in Thailand.

Key Takeaways

• A 20-year-old woman was rescued from a Jomtien hotel after being held by a Chinese gang.

• Police tracked her location through a GPS message sent secretly to her brother.

• One Chinese suspect is in custody as authorities expand their investigation.

Come on, she's 20. Doesn't have 100+ years of experience most posters on this forum have.

  • So she is not quite the innocent victim here and was quite prepared to get into nefarious activities!

  • Who let these scumbags in to Thailand?

She was exploited to a point... but it all started with her volunteering her services.

Maybe in the future she will be a bit more careful about opening mule accounts for the Chinese.

Maybe the police will teach her the error of her ways.

A twenty year old held in a room by a gang of 7 Chinese.

Usually in Pattaya they are held in a room by a gang of 7 Indians.

Stupid is as stupid does, she should be charged for offering to open a mule account, and wasting police time. sorry I have no sympathy for her. I'd like to know what got her into financial difficulties, or am I not reading this story correctly. How does she manage to live in Thailand anyway ?? Did she not have any customers ??

If a fraud matter she pissed off the chinese something that may not be a good idea

In an utterly desperate bid to increase the tourism numbers they lowered the prerequisites to the point where they allowed the Chinese Triads and the Russian Bratva to establish footholds here, not very good planning.

A decent scam, but how much could this gang make if they only prey on people already in enough debt to want to be "bag men" for money launderers?

How many Thais even have 200,000 baht in their bank accounts?  And give unsupervised cell access to a captive?

Either this is a very dumb Chinese gang, or there is more to the story.

"Great" to see that the mule account thing is still ongoing, after all their cracking down on it for months, headless chicken style.

Don't see any good people in this story apart from the cops.

Stupid is as stupid does. :coffee1:

What's going on here i thought Thailand was welcoming Chinese tourists by the millions to come to Thailand and enjoy Thai hospitality

Maybe they should look at who is coming to Thailand more closely Ie the criminal element seems to be a lot of Chinese getting involved in incidents here

they don't advertise it though.

how do you recommend sniffing out the criminal element?

I think, however, that she knew mule accounts are illegal and decided to enquire about employment openings anyway. Probably assumed it was just minor fraud, rather than the fairly major criminal activities that the gang was into.

In any case, she had a lucky escape and hopefully won’t be tempted by illegal activities in the future.

Provide the Chinese authorities with the passport details of the gang. When they return to China there will be a welcoming committee waiting for them.

Don't they know holding hostages is a reserved occupation?

Arrest and deport!

how convenient that only one gang member was left there for the police. 🤔 🤣

Stupid and lucky also that’s all they wanted from her.
