I had a work colleague come to me last night and tell me he travelled on a holiday only 3 hours from Australia to a French speaking country ?

I said what ??? There's no french speaking country 4 hours from the eastern side of Australia!

He said the police even wear french police caps and they have the French flag up

I saud don't lie to me I'm an academic

He then said he went a little further 4 hours away from Australia to an American country !!

It just so happens that a couple of days ago I was looking at linguistic diversity and:

If NC has 2000 languages about 1970 of them are imported/dead according to this:

According to Google the closest French-speaking territories to Australia are New Caledonia and French Polynesia, both French overseas collectivities and countries. Other nearby French-speaking places in the region include Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna.

And from what i saw it is a pretty and pleasant island.  I want to go back someday.

Wow! Not sure how you could post this without doing a bit of checking first.

AI

The flight time from New Caledonia (French Caledonia) to Australia varies by destination, with the average direct flight being around 3 hours. For example, a direct flight from La Tontouta Airport (NOU) near Nouméa to Sydney (SYD) takes an average of 3 hours and 21 minutes, while a flight to Brisbane (BNE) is shorter, averaging about 2 hours and 34 minutes.

The closest American territory to Australia is American Samoa, a U.S. territory in the South Pacific Ocean.

There are no nonstop flights from American Samoa to Australia, so the flight time will depend on the layover. For example, a flight with a stopover in Nadi (NAN) can take around 7 hours and 50 minutes, while a trip to Melbourne with a stop in Apia could take about 9 hours and 35 minutes.

New Caledonia.

Visited the island on the Fairstar, the fun ship 🚢

GG, can I suggest that if your knowledge of geography is appalling as it seems, that you become a radio amateur like myself 🙂  For us radio hams, it's a must to know every country in the world, big or tiny, what language(s) is spoken, the name of the capital city and smaller cities etc.  We even know what kind of weather these countries experience.....

Wallis and Futuna is also a French overseas collectivity and closer to Australia than French Polynesia.

I don't know if you do any scuba, but a few people have told me that they believe that French Polynesia has the best dive sites in the world.

There are several places East and North that have French Polynesia roots,

Yes. Several of my ex coworkers were ex navy and had served in the pacific and were quite active divers.  They had been to several islands/sites

right...you're the one asking travel agents and apparently never heard of new caledonia....with age for some comes wisdom.

When the French were testing nuclear weapons in Mururoa , the Aussies were crying, claiming it was in their "backyard".

All achieved in less than 5 minutes with an internet search.

French Polynesians speak a French that is very understandable to people from mainland France (unlike Quebecers), but they roll their "r"s, which sounds strange to me, being French myself.
P.S.: I thought only Americans didn't know geography; but I was wrong, some Australians don't either.
