White Temple in Chiang Rai to Double Entry Fee for Foreigners

I believe the White Temple (or more technically Wat Rong Khun) is a private attraction like ,say, Mini Siam in Pattaya or The Ancient City in Samut Prakan . So they are free to charge whatever they wish.

I have visited with a small group but didn't enter as it is not my thing.  I sat in the a/c Cafe across the carpark from the entrance. It was quite pleasant.

They can always charge whatever they wish,

Anyway, most tourists are not that easily upset ,unlike many on here

  • Just another stab in the back to foreigners visiting. Not only did they make you pay to see the temple before but now they are doubling that fee all the while letting Thais enter free. Avoid this plac

This is not a Buddhist temple.  To be legally recognised as a registered wat there must be a minimum of one monk.  It's a profit making art installation and tourist attraction masquerading as a temple

  • Visited the white temple for the first time in 2008, it was free. Second time in 2010, free... third time in 2012, still free... Brought some friends/family over when they were visiting (20016-2017-20

I've also heard they ban tourists from entering the temple between 2 and 5 p.m., but I think they're working on a clarification for this. 😉

Nah   you are getting confused with alcohol sales,  did you start early today to "beat the ban" ?

A very beautiful temple totally wood carved inside, a cave and mountain to climb to have nice views and even Buddha Statues too you can find in Kao Yoi Phetchaburi province and it is totally free

Not very convenient for  skint tourists in chiang Rai though,  If they wince at paying 200bt admission what would they think of the taxi fare to petchaburi?

No big deal.  Six bucks.  Interesting place.  Worth a six buck admission.  However, I've seen it once.  No reason to go back.

For a tourist who wants to go there, it's peanuts, move on......:coffee1:

Greedy plonkers. Plenty of first class photos and videos of the white temple online, there's no need to actually go there anyway.

should we do the same in our own country? all thai people should pay an entry fee to visit our tourist attractions that are free for our citizens...

Many countries do. They also have ageist policies, like reduced or waived entry fees for 60 years +, Under age 18.   If the 200 baht is offensive, do not go. This is not a must see venue.

No body askes you to Visit  you do yourself ,

seeing something here in Thailand costs money like most countries ,

so it is 200 baht or 2 beers +then don't drink for  a day i sure you will not go Bankrupt  .

Thailand all about money   Nothing Free here

in my Country nothing is now free for locals. And in some places e.g. Venice there are differentiated fees for residents and tourists.

Anyway I'd agree to have a differentiated fee for citizens and tourists in all attractions like in Thailand, but there will surely be the annoying BS " it is against Costitution, it is discriminating.."

The issue with Thailand, they go by passport, not by residency. I am resident still pay the 10x fees.

functions as an art installation and cultural attraction

While not a traditional temple with active monks, it is a privately owned art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple. I believe built by the Thai owner who also built on his property various shops near the "temple".

maintaining the government’s practice of encouraging citizens to engage with national heritage sites

Why is the government encouraging citizens to visit a private property and private art exhibit? I suspect the government will not tax all the income generated by this private property being a "national treasure."

Fixed it!

As a Buddhist temple, it is odd that they want to earn money by selling tickets instead of seeking donations.

Because it IS NOT a Buddhist Temple.  It's essentially a privately owned art display, buildings included.

I live near the White temple and know how much local vendors depend on a steady flow of tourists visiting the place. If they do anything, such as raise prices, there is going to be a knock on effect in terms of how much food, drink, or souvenirs create revenue for the local population. So, as some others have suggested, its akin to shooting yourself in the foot - much better to just charge everyone a token fee of 50 baht or thereabouts...

You could say the same about Thailand, and every place outside your house.

Think of all the money you save, order in, look at the world on your phone, and never leave the house :coffee1:

Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai will double its entry fee for foreign tourists to 200 baht from 1 January 2026.

No problem for me, it is truly wonderful to see, especially with the new adjacent Golden temple.

It was one of the many tourist attractions I officially visited when a Tourist Police Volunteer based in Chiang Rai. As an 81 year old UK citizen, I would be able to get in free these days (ref.

senior visitors aged 70+, and children under 120 cm will still enter free of charge.

If you are looking for free lunch go back to your country 😞

Maybe you can explain your US remark?

You can read more in the link that I provided.

That is a lie. They do not charge double for foreigner tourists.

I never mentioned anything about "duble" – have you checked the provided link?

I read the link but the executive order has yet to be put in place. There currently is not higher entry fees for non US residents to enter US national parks.  It might happen in the future but not currently.

No, I didn't get up today any earlier than I usually do. I suggest you start a little earlier than usual tomorrow, and look up the word "sarcasm" online. 🙄

As suggested I looked up "sarcasm "  but even AI  could not seem to connect it with your comment,  the same went for "humour" and indeed "intelligence"

How about "astute"? That's probably a better description of my comment than "sarcasm." 😉

Yes! I finally agree with a comment you have written. Neither of the words I listed above is "appropriate'; one is "astute" and the other is "sarcasm." 😉

And now you are trying (and failing) to be either funny or clever.

Yes, I agree again! I'm not "trying (and failing) to be either funny or clever." I'm SUCEEDING at being BOTH funny and clever! 🙂

And, you might try looking up how to use the terms "either" and "neither."
