Supreme Court Orders Thaksin to Pay 17.6-Billion-Baht Tax Bill

The Supreme Court has ordered Thaksin Shinawatra to pay 17.6 billion Thai baht in taxes, fines, and fees relating to the sale of Shin Corporation shares in 2006. This overturns the earlier decisions by Thailand's Central Tax Court and the Special Appeals Court, which had sided with Thaksin, previously cancelling the Revenue Department's tax assessment due to illegality.

The origins of this case trace back to a 2017 tax assessment by the Revenue Department, demanding payment from Thaksin following the sale of Shin Corp shares. In 2023, Thaksin managed to initially win his case in both the Tax Court and Appeals Court. However, the Revenue Department challenged these rulings, leading to the Supreme Court's recent reversal.

Previously, in 2010, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions had already ruled to seize Thaksin's assets valued at 46 billion baht. In this recent judgement, the court considered that Thaksin's children, Panthongtae and Pintongta, effectively acted as proxies, facilitating the share sale in 2006.

They purchased 329 million shares for one baht each and sold them for 49.25 baht per share to Temasek via the Thai Stock Exchange, yielding nearly 16 billion baht in capital gains, reported the Bangkok Post.

The transaction allowed Temasek, Singapore's government investment arm, to acquire a 49% stake in Shin Corp for 73.3 billion baht. This deal was enabled by a recent legal amendment increasing the foreign ownership limit in telecommunications from 25% to 49%, just days after which the sale concluded in January 2006, with Thaksin as prime minister.

Key Takeaways

  • The Supreme Court orders Thaksin to pay 17.6 billion baht in taxes.
  • Previous court rulings in his favour have been overturned.
  • Thaksin’s children acted as proxies in the lucrative share sale.

For those who may have missed it, his 2008 escape was with the excuse to go to the Beijing Olympics; was he really sitting in bird-nest stadium for 15 years?

How the tables have turned. The Shins are finished. They are no longer needed to keep the miltary establishment status quo. As for finished this extends to the PTP as a whole.

Looks like Karma has finally kicked in. Thaksin has few friends anymore in politics to sway judgements against him or his other family members in politics. Now if they can only charge him some more to keep him in prison for his farcical display of illness to escape his prison sentence previously.

Is this a massive bribe to fund his early release?

As long as he pays up, ok with me.

The judgement seems justified to me, he was abusing his power and screwing the system.

When will the persecution ever stop.

Absolutely.  My point is/was, will this sum fund his early release, leaving him to survive with only the 9 million UKP profit he made through selling Manchester City?

Its nothing to be proud of, for Thailand !!  but its good they are starting to clean house, they are a lot more corrupt people in thailand who should be in prison, Thaskin and his kin are evil for what they have done to the people of Thailand

No one is suprised by Thaksin's shady dealings. He malipulated the law to increase the personal wealth of himself and his family.

His dealings for personal gain while in power cost the country dearly.

What is a most welcome turn of events however is the realisation and actions of the current authorities.

Their efforts to seek financial redrebution from the Thaksin family who have a long history of dishonesty at the expense of the  Thai people is long overdue.

Yingluk still owes 5 billion.

He had enough money and leverage, and he said - all he ever wanted was to return to Thailand, retire, die and be buried with his family beside him.

BUT when he returned to Thailand, he made a mockery of Thai justice system - got out of jail on fake illness - then be the puppet master, setting up all the dummies/proxies, to return and mass power, money and status......and want to control Thailand again disregarding all his pathetic pleas earlier to return

Now the powers to be finally woke up and - just set him back in his place 🤣...

at least he is still alive.

wow, you have things all mixed up!!

The coup was in 2006 and he was in New York for a UN meeting when the coup happened.

He returned to Thailand in 2008. Yes, he was staying in Hong Kong after the coup.
