solar garden lights

Featured Replies

Wife want some solar garden lights, who charge day time and open at night time. I have no experience on this but im very conflicted by that all she show me..and all i find on Lazada look like use and throw. In my logic it must be common sense to be able to replace the led when they dead so not need to replace the whole unit. Any one have some views on this?

The battery is the thing that will most likely need replacing not the LED a lot come with no over or undercharging protection   so will fail much quicker than they might  if the battery had protection..

look for units with a battery cover  lots come now completely sealed

"for water protection"  yeah but you can't change the battery without some major surgery ( bit like mobile phones)

I ordered (Apr 2022) from link below, and still working flawlessly, even on very overcast days, from JD on LAZ:

I have ordered many solar lights from them and also from other companies, but none have lasted that long, 1-2 years max and they need replacing. You got lucky with them.

The problem with these lights is that they are not serviceable although some YT channels say they are.

To test that, I gave my BIL his son, the promise if he could renew the batteries in my "broken" lights, he would get THB 1000 for each light. BIL his son is very technical, he drives and repairs a Rice harvester for example, and he in the end FAILED MISERABLY.

Those lights are sealed so tight that it was impossible to open without breaking the "glass"  in front of them and thus rendering them useless in all weather conditions.

Thats too bad. Its not so much money but its just not make sense to have to throw it all away because  parts can not be replaced.

Yes, that is the main thing. if they would be user serviceable then it would be another matter, so if you are looking for just simple garden lights look at the ones with battery covers as @johng suggested in this topic

You have to attack them from the back  I got lucky not to hit anything important  by using and angle grinder with cut off wheel to  cut an opening ,  locating the battery ( no protection)  and replacing it with a protected cell  soldering required  then silicone the cut out bit of plastic back in place  not pretty but it works.

I have a solar 12" round white globe on top of a pedestal in the middle of a small garden pond, cost me 500bht.

It comes on usually when well into dusk, perhaps 6pm, it stays alight till 4 in the morning. It is I think 2 years old.....

It was a good buy, from Lazada....🤗

Completely sealed throw away enclosures is the norm these days however with some careful heat gun manipulation many can be repaired by removing the front glass.

Top quality serviceable solar street and garden lights are expensive and mostly sold by specialist vendors.

Both JD Mall and Modi Solar on Lazada offer reasonable quality lights with both offering longer "on times" if required.

Of course most of the online stores are full of B.S. Example - Solar Light 10000Watt LED

Lumen inflation or wattage inflation designed to make the product look superior to an average consumer who doesn't scrutinize technical specifications.

Take the screws off the top and replace the battery with a rechargeable battery. I have done it many times for my little lawn lights. The batteries last about two years.

and the wiring is thinner than a human hair,  they are clearly not designed to be repaired,,   I would not bother with utube , there are clowns on there who will try to repair a  bic deposable razor, complete waste of time

or simply  does not understand electrical specifications at all.    I have noticed cordless drills on shoppee claimed to operate at 199 volts.  There iis effectively no advertising standards here to fall foul of here     Buyer beware is the order of the day

Wires are designed/used to do the job that is needed, I have repaired loads of stuff in my time, which I enjoy.

Most of my repair info has come from YouTube, and repair parts from Lazada.....

So, I think you are very wrong, chap........🤫

like headlights on modern cars.

wjhack em the oven at 150c  for a bit to soften the glue and the glass will release.

I looked at a battery powered Chain Saw.........10,000 watts at 99000 rpm !

Both Bosch and Makita offering exactly the same thing.  5555

I decided to use 220v lights in the garden, a little bit more expensive but will last a lifetime.

I have a battery brush cutter/grass edge trimmer, 20v  with 40,000Mah battery, it is surprisingly powerful in use, though I have had to pull it apart a couple of times to fix soldering, a talking of thin wires, you would not believe how fine the wires are, and how small the motor is, technology for you....Oh, can buy a new motor for it for about 100bht if needed.....:clap2:

I hope you have fitted a ground fault protection breaker of about 15 milliamps to  'protect the children'   oops no that's another thread

15 milliamps to protect from death sam-a-lee for all humans and quite a lot of animals too.

I went the same way  low wattage  5w or less   LEDs  use next to nothing and are brighter than any solar light.

Although I would not go so far as to say they will last a lifetime  I had one fail the other day , the micro thin wires leading to the bulb holder had become so brittle , no doubt due to the heat , and  had simply snapped off at the terminal . which was red rusty,

Although to be fair i have had them around 10 years.

I bought a set of garden solar lamps (the ones with a picket that you plunge in the grass)  in large a well known retailer hardware store chain that has shops all over,  for Home hardware etc.... Hefty price for crappy quality. Got far better with Temu or Lazada at 1/3 of the cost.

I bought some of those UFO garden lights from Thaiwatsadu and two out of three failed after a couple of weeks.

It was not too difficult to dismantle them and sus out the problem. The BMS was irresponsibly miniscule and the batteries were on their last legs.

The remote sensor was also a bit iffy so I replaced pretty well the entire innards with some much more suitable bits 'n pieces.

Being as how I'm a clever old sod they are all now working "brilliantly" and have been for well over six months now.

I think they are now as they should have been when they left China.

Was it worth the effort?

Not really but the original financial commitment plus my personal curiosity/dissatisfaction made me rise to the challenge.

Far better to buy from Lazada. Cheaper then the similar crap sold in regular hardware stores costing double if not triple the price.

Absolutely, but when I bought mine from Thaiwatsadu they were offering two for the price of one.

It's noticeable that my local store has stopped selling them now.

Got a few from Temu also...but that was real crap and did not last. Those on Lazada however normally are still operating and left outside for a year now with no issues.
