US plans to start checking all tourists' social media

So much for free speech?

All tourists - including those from Britain - will have to undergo a social media screening before being allowed entry into the US under new plans being considered by the country's border force.

At the moment, Britons are among those who can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. They just have to obtain an electronic travel authorisation, known as an ESTA, for $40 (£30). The potential social media mandate being proposed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would apply to anyone visiting, whether they require a visa or not.

According to a notice published in America's federal register on Tuesday, foreign tourists would need to provide their social media from the last five years.

It will be "mandatory" to hand over the information, and other details - including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the names, addresses, numbers, and birthdays of family members - will also be required.

Under Trump the US is an authoritarian regime with only one friend, Putin.

Law and order, something that the butthurt left is annoyed by. Now, if the lunatics in the previous administration weren’t so freaking lawless then this wouldn’t be on the table now would it. And if the lunatic Brits weren’t mismanaging their country and letting floods of knife wielding child rapping murder immigrants into their country then maybe that country wouldn’t be on the list.

The only lunatic around is your president, a truly deranged man spitting vile abuse at female journalists, ex allies (hello Marjorie) and whole nations ( Somalia).

Lots of law enforcement in canada dress similar. Saw some OPP exercises a few weeks ago and not an id in sight other than police on their backs.  There must of been 20 to 30 unmarked cars and dozens of unidentified officers all dressed in military gear. Only the one car was identifiable. Pic doesnt show how many were there. Best I could do walking by.

Just like ice.

Funny. Right wingers got so incensed on Facebook and others censored content. But when the government denies entry to foreigners face not on any crimes but simply speech, they're fine with that. 2025 is turning into 1984 and the guy like George Orwell would probably be forbidden from entering.

My Ukraine posts might pass the sniff tests and I love Israel and hate Palestinians am I in ? Social Media - gettting banned for that who would have thunk !!!

Im guessing those among us that repeatedly and knowingly falsely called him a rapist - including one renowned hater today - will be puckering up at the news their devices will be screened for criminality on entering the US. Ouch ouch and ouch again. Never mind only cost Stephanopolous $15 million. Small change for a retired diver no doubt well worth it for him.

Theoretically there's a universe where he could say Social Security is reserved for true patriots  and those that live in the Homeland.

My advice to foreigners is to boycott dystopian fascist white nationalist ruled America unless and until that movement crumbles. Obviously if you need to travel to the U.S. or buy U.S. preducts for some important reason, that's different, but that's my general advice. The majority of Americans DO NOT support what's going on now!

Nothing wrong with keeping unwanted troublemakers out of your country. I wish Thailand would do the same (and if it ever does, my social media, including this forum, isn't going to cause me any problems at all). Keeping people out of a country that they dump on and complain about doesn't trouble me at all.

She's on a contract. Everything to do with Trump is transactional.

Unwanted by whom? Troublemaking how?

Unwanted by American citizens. Troublemaking through coming to the US and joining protests against the US. No self-respecting country should allow people to enter, protest and end up blocking streets, campuses, businesses, or churches. If their social media provides evidence of an inclination to do that, they shouldn't be allowed in.

So it's alright if I call Trump a raging narcissistic liar so long as I pledge not to join any protests?

Nobody from any sane civilised country wants to set foot in that hellhole of a country anyway. Horrible place.

Not the same, not even remotely close.

Lawful non-citizens such as legal permanent residents and visa holders and even tourists are generally protected by the First Amendment while in the United States. The main difference is in the consequences of speech, particularly in relation to a foreign national's immigration status and entry into the country. Unlike citizens, a foreign national's speech, even if protected from direct criminal penalty, can potentially be used as a basis for denying admission into the US, denying naturalization/green card applications, or even for deportation in certain circumstances, example if the speech is linked to organizations or activities that violate immigration laws, such as endorsing terrorism. Non-citizens, especially those whose status is temporary or pending, may face a strong incentive toward self-censorship to avoid risking their residency. Nothing new here in the law as previous administrations have exercised it, the only difference is that the Biden administration went berserk letting floods of illegal migrants in and the current administration is doing the exact opposite by pushing back as hard as possible, and rightly so. Sorta like a payback for the idiocy of the last administration.

I call him that all the time. But if you're a foreign citizen entering the US, you're a guest, with no right to partake or interfere with the US political system. I know I hold my tongue when speaking about Thailand in any way other than as a guest grateful for the long term opportunity to visit.

Why would one visit Tacoland these days?...

And what is the purpose of it all?

I fear Donald wants to know who said anything negative about him. If that's the case, you might be offered a holiday on Guantanamo. I hear that Cuba is nice this time of year.

Which American citizens? Ones who agree with you? Did you actually read the article? Apart from your apparent distaste for the first amendment, where was it noted that the administration was targeting would be demonstrators?

The founding fathers would be horrified by your claim.

There is no first amendment right to enter the US.
