Trump Steps In as Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Escalates

A few thoughts as an American expat in Thailand who represents the strong majority of Americans that now oppose Trump.

A little presumptuous to say you represent the majority of Americans don't you think? Were you self appointed to this role.

I think you can only represent yourself.

That's the problem with echo chambers on the internet, they tend to reinforce someone's thoughts from time to time and unfortunately lead said person to think everyone must agree with him.

I can easily say I represent the millions of Americans who agree with President Trump. But, like you, it is inconsequential.

US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to mediate the renewed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, which has escalated following a fragile truce brokered in July. The phone intervention comes as fighting reaches its third day, raising concerns over escalating tensions.

In an interview, Thailand's Foreign Affairs Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, expressed doubts about negotiations, suggesting the border situation was not conducive to third-party mediation. Conversely, an adviser to Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, indicated Cambodia’s willingness for dialogue. Trump's past claims of easing global tensions include disputes like those between India and Pakistan, and now he turns his attention to Southeast Asia.

Trump has maintained communication with leaders from both countries since the initial violent clashes in July, which caused at least 48 casualties. Despite his previous mediation efforts, Sihasak voiced opposition to Trump’s tariff threats as a means of bringing Thailand to negotiation. Current unrest followed an incident in which a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine allegedly laid by Cambodia—a claim Cambodia denies.

Recent reports indicate escalating casualties: Cambodia’s Defence Ministry cited nine civilian deaths and 20 injuries, whereas Thailand reported four soldier fatalities and 68 injuries. Thailand’s military aims to incapacitate Cambodia’s military strength long-term. Simultaneously, Cambodia accused Thailand of targeting civilian areas—an accusation Thailand refuted.

Hostilities have intensified, with Cambodian rockets hitting Phanom Dong Rak Hospital in Surin province, a facility previously damaged during July’s conflicts. Additionally, Cambodia has withdrawn from the 2025 SEA Games, citing concerns over athlete safety, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump plans a phone intervention in the Thailand-Cambodia conflict.
  • Thailand doubts successful negotiations, Cambodia open to talks.
  • Escalating tensions result in casualties and SEA Games withdrawal.

This continuing acceptance that trump will settle this dispute is total phukin baloney. He is proving on a daily basis everything he does is for him to personally profit from. I doubt he even knows where “Thighland” , as he called it, or Cambodia are on the map, let alone what the dispute is about. He has no personal involvement in dealing with it, he leaves to others until it’s completed and then performs in front of the cameras as his vainglorious malignant narcissists ego craves.
The world, Europe in particular, are recognising the threat he poses to world peace.

He desperately wants to been seen like Putin or Xi who accept him with open arms so they can play him for their own benefit. Putin allegedly has a copy of the “bubba” tape to ensure his compliance.

This is guy also protects his pedo buddies, and tries to coerce witnesses in falsifying his own involvement.
He’s no hero, but an insane dementia riddled moron helping to fulfill some sick fantasy for others, such as Miller, Bannon et al who want to implement an authoritarian state.

Americans are finally waking to the truth about what he really is, and always has been, a con man. Fortunately his mental condition and age are beginning to  be more evident and his decline more rapid. The sooner the better.

I'd say always, but does he care.......?

Just a small point which my lovely Thai wife made to me.

The original cause of the dispute is down to Thai corruption.

Apparently some Cambodians wanted to move onto land on the Thai side of the border.

Money changed hands and houses were built.

That is how we got Cambodians claiming bits of Thailand.

Now Thailand wants those bits of land back and the proverbial has hit the fan.

Trump is infinitely familiar with sharp practices and so would be well placed to understand the intricacies of this situation.

Unfortunately, Trumps agenda is 100% selfish and he will only find a solution which makes him look good.

This constant bashing of a democratically elected president is annoying and tiring.

I remember one demonstrator at a "No king" meeting being asked why he was here, answering: "I was told to attend".

Pathetic

Of course, I am very unhappy about any kind of armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

Of course I support any sincere international efforts to try to mediate between the two sides towards peace.

HOWEVER, with Trump there are some big problems.

Trump has ALREADY taken credit for "ending" this local what he calls a war.

He accomplished this non-accomplishment by using big stick TARIFF TRADE WAR threats against both sides.

In reality, a president of the U.S. imposing tariffs without congress is ILLEGAL.

Now he is trying that game again.

Some might say, well that's OK, the threats of illegally using increased tariffs is for a good cause -- PEACE.

But people should look at this another way.

Talking about Thailand specifically, Trump doing this is stepping on the sovereignty of Thailand.

Whether the Thais are right about this conflict or not (frankly the issues are too arcane for me to have an informed opinion about that) doing that invites HOSTILITY by both the government of Thailand and proud nationalist Thai people.

It pushes Thailand away from the USA long term and towards China.

To what effect? So that Trump can amass more "wins" for the real Peace Prize that he's never going to win anyway.

If fits a disgusting pattern by Trump that is without any doubt going to make America less great, less successful, and less wealthy -- trashing traditional allies.

Probably worth a new topic -- but personally I have noticed an increase of negative reactions from Thais upon learning my nationality. I don't know if that is anecdotal or related to Trump's bullying actions.

As a small, ordinary Swiss citizen, I naturally have my own thoughts about Trump. However, I'll set that topic aside for now.
What truly frustrates me is the behavior of FIFA and its Swiss president, Gianni Infantino. It's not just that he's cozy with Trump—he's completely entangled, head to toe.
A FIFA Peace Prize... what a joke. This is corruption in its most blatant form.
Thankfully, this circus has a limited shelf life of, at most, another three years. After that, this farce will finally come to an end

Don't care whos trying to encourage peaceful settlement. That is only a good thing.. anyone bitching, being political about whether its the UN, Trump or anyone else calling for peace cares nothing for the people getting hurt or killed.

Go look in the mirror, either you support peace regardless whos calling for it or your part of the problem.

Couldn't agree more!!

Nowhere in the above posts has it been pointed out that Trump had very little input to the first "peace accord".

Those who did the groundwork were the Malaysian Prime Minister and a Chinese delegation sent by Xi.

Trump was busy cheating at golf in Scotland when he called the US Ambassador in Bangkok and said  "Make me look like a peacemaker" before returning to his cheating.

Kudos to the one Trump apologist on AN who had the guts to defend the indefensible, "Bday" something, who solely waved the MAGA flag.

There are some excellent and informed articles out there. Use a VPN and read them. They cannot be cited here.

But he stopped the war and he's too busy being a pirate lately 🙄

'He stopped the war'. Well I guess that's one way to see it, but other reports indicate trump did some trade policy promises and that relieved some conflict.

Reality is that trump would have no immediate knowledge of this situation so how could he stop the war?

Yes he did take cedit months ago for ending this conflict but in reality he has no understanding whatever what the conflict is all about.

Give Trump credit. He apparently has learned how pronounce Thailand correctly--instead of Thigh-land. Don't know if he has got around to figuring out "Yo-semite" Sam, however.

Thank God Trump is stepping in to talk some sense into these poor excuses for leaders.

Cambodia has asked for talks, but Thailand is not agreeing.

I know this is click bait, yet I will bite, trump should worry about all the problems he has created in the US, the country is going down the drain while creating piracy on the high seas. The US is no longer great, just a clown and a circus

Unfortunately the useless and weak Anutin has passed the buck and dissolved parliament. So when Trump calls today at 21.10 I guess Anutin will tell him "Sorry, I'm not in charge anymore".

Anutin has basically completely abdicated responsibility to the military.

In the absence of anyone with authority to talk to, not much Trump can do really.

Yah, I wonder if Anutin will have the modesty to admit it's better to talk to a military leader, rather than him. I can imagine they will want to insulate the military leaders from Trump and let them do as they please.

Which is why I think the military will have told him "You tell Trump some bs, keep him off of our back, and we'll do our best to smash the Cambodian military for as long as we can".

Look at his boat; way out of his depth. OLD people should not be running countries, and especially ones that have the power to change and/or destroy the rest of the world. I get the whole immigration and woke agenda thing, it sucks for everyone else that it has all bounced too far Left and hamstrung Western society, but bro jumping in on photoshoots saving this or that war is cringe.

So much for mediation by Trump. "If you don't do what i demand I will punish you by putting tariffs up" being one of his threats. The man does not deserve the Nobel Peace prize. He needs to resign!

IMO, Thais do not give a single f**k about president Trump and his tariff threats. This is a dispute about defining the disputed borders of the two Kingdoms, which can only be decided by negotiations between those two Kingdoms.

Any "rulings" by outside parties will be, rightfully, ignored.

I mean,

what's the point of a big

top heavy

military if

you can't blow up some peasants

from time to time.?

In a nutshell:  He DON'T know his A.. from his elbow!

Couldn't be corruption, well not from the Thai side - must be a mistake.

Hey Ding-Dong, what strong majority oppose Trump?  It's only the few inflicted with <removed>, your tribe. What disgusting pattern? Constant complaining and nothing of substance.

As for your negative reactions, I doubt it has anything to do with nationality, and more aligned with your actions.
