Expats on frozen pensions

Featured Replies

Ok it's not great situation to be in but the UK government has never made a secret that pensions in certain countries will be frozen when you reside there. I knew this 16 years ago when I retired at 40, I calculated this against the benefits of retirement in thailand and decided was worth the potential loss

I'm ex military and thing that is most annoying is our government can send us to any crap hole they desire to and we are still expected to pay the national insurance but we can't expect the payouts while living abroad in retirement

Yes, it's a pointless cause, even if it's one I support. It would be electoral suicide for any party to support this, especially in the current anti-foreigner climate in the UK. I wouldn't be surprised if a nationalistic party like Reform UK decide to remove all pensions from people residing overseas!

Petition
Ensure the annual pension increase applies to all pensioners living abroad

We want the Government to ensure that pensioners get thier annual increase if they live abroad in certain countries. Currently, some people do not receive increases even if they have worked 50 years in the UK prior to retiring abroad.
You can see and sign the petition here >  https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/746473

Whilst I recognise the chance of this petition reversing things is slim, it only takes few moments to add your support.

I was the 1,013th person to do so. At 10,000 'signatures', the government has to respond. At 100,000 'signatures', it gets a debate in parliament.

When you choose to retire in Thailand you need to plan long term around this rule .I have purchased a cheap property just north of hull so I can maintain a uk presence and I can always sell it in the future

I don't know about AU and NZ, but my Canadian Pension Plan benefits are adjusted for cost of living each year. My Canadian Old Age Supplement is adjusted 4 times a year.

If you are out of the country one day more than six months you loose your supplement.

No UK government will ever 'unlock' the frozen pensions...

In 2018 the Labour Party endorsed the findings of the APPG and then the following year on Page 76 of the 2019 manifesto committed to equalise the state pension.

Not called the party of U turns for nothing, and not surprising the APPG on frozen pensions disappeared when they took office.

The real problem here is lack of support from the public and the media has a lot to answer for. At no time have I ever seen the media challenge a Labour MP on their about turn in policy.

When Starmer refused to meet Ann Puckeridge it was widely reported but never any mention that they had previously supported a change.

In the last response to a petition, the government spokesman said the policy had been supported by the courts, which was effectively a lie. The court didn't find in favour of the case that was brought, quite different interpretation. The case in question was brought in 2002, the policy has never been tested under current legislation.

The government has dug it's heels in under guidance from the treasury, the lawyers live in fear of a class action.

I misinterpreted a post in this thread as referring to Canadian pensions. This thread is ONLY about UK pensions.

You're partially correct. Canada's Gauranteed Income Supplement is not paid to non-residents but the base OAS is, provided you meet the length of residency requirement.

Sorry, you have been forced back to the UK through this pension nonsense.

A quick point, though: 750 quid doesn't get you much in the UK these days.

I wasn't forced back by the pension nonsense (I had planned to move to the PI where UK pensions are index-linked). Rather, considering my age and health, I made the realistic decision to return to the UK.

There were cheaper houses to rent, but without a credit rating, none of the estate agents would consider me....

Not necessarily. If you've lived in Canada for 20 years after turning 18 you can collect OAS regardless of where you live.

I don’t think the UK expats in Thailand should hold their breath in expectation of a government u turn on this issue.

However, the spat between Harrisfan and AN posters has been fun.

A couple of months ago I posted that I thought that susanlea had entertained us so much with her/his far right rants and was so “unliked” that she/he morphed into the moniker Jonny Fartpants. I think it was “Candide” that said “No, susanlea is posting under the Harrisfan moniker”. I agreed at the time but since have realised that although Harrisfan is an insecure far right individual who craves attention ,“I’ve got most likes”, his posts are far more grammatically correct compared to those of Jonny Fartpants so I think they are separate individuals.

No UK government will ever 'unlock' the frozen pensions...

(This from someone who 2 weeks ago returned to live in the UK after 23 years in Asia, with one driving factor in my decision being the frozen pensions).

Thanks Simon. Best of luck and enjoyment in West Somerset.

Being a raiway buff, I often travelled on your heritage line between Bishops Lydiard and Minehead.

I have posted this for reference to explain further for UK ex-pats:

To unlock frozen UK State Pensions (OAPs) for expats, the UK government needs to change its policy of only uprating pensions in countries with reciprocal agreements, which requires political will, legislative action, and funding, likely through a significant budget allocation (hundreds of millions annually) or by ending other benefits like the Triple Lock, a move facing considerable opposition from pensioners and campaign groups like the APPG on Frozen Pensions, potentially costing around £0.9 billion a year to fully implement.

They can't, but they should stop paying benefits to people abroad. A pension is earned

I agree - done the same even though i'm not affected personally, I find it reprehensible, that people who've EARNED their pensions are denied them just because they choose to live abroad. And, by the way, by living abroad, they are saving the UK government money in other benefits.

Oh and the count now stands at 1,024 so i fear it'll never get debated.

Oh, and Good Luck @simon43

Thanks! But please note that I have not forgotten Burma :) I hope to travel to Inle Lake region for 28 days during the long school holiday to teach/practice spoken English to local teachers - since many (most?) local teachers never have the opportunity to improve their spoken English accent from a native speaker :)

I managed to find a private landlord who was happy to rent to me without any credit agency check. It's a house in Minehead, 750 quid/month (which to me is a rop-off but apparently normal cost now!). but all OK

That seems cheap for a whole house but then again it is in Minehead.

I have rented out a purpose built two bed two bath flat, on site gym and a concierge I bought last year in Chelmsford Essex, 30 mins train ride to London, three mins walk from the station, £1700 a month with one years contract, it was rented 13 days after being put on the market.

I also lived in the flat for five months after returning from living in Thailand, my pension was then set to the current pension rate and will not drop any lower no matter what I do in the future.

I am now about to tell them I have been out of the country for a number of months and am on an unknown length of travel plans in Thailand, which will mean I get the raise in April this year but it may be frozen again from April 2027.

So we Brits can go back for a few months, tell DPW we are back and our intention is to remain there and then a few months later leave again as our plans have now changed, it is all legal.

Some people will state we have to remain a year but they are just mixing that up with the tax year for tax residency on world wide income.

They also say you can not use the NHS for one year which also is not true, I saw my new doctor a few weeks after going back temporarily last year.

I also registered with a doctor within one day of applying online and also got a free bus pass and I renewed my driving licence.

The state pension is a nice supplement to other monthly income and is well worth topping up with such a move every few years.

You are talking out of your derrier.

I am not a fan of Hull,I am neutral but:

Property prices in Kingston upon Hull have experienced significant growth over the last ten years, with some reports indicating a nearly 100% increase in average prices between 2015 and 2025, driven heavily by rises in semi-detached and detached homes

.As of late 2025, the average property price in Hull was approximately £153,921 to £170,350, depending on the data source, with 3.3% annual growth recorded between 2014 and 2023.

That is still dirt cheap compared to the country wide average price of 350k to 395k but still better than a kick in the goolies.😀

...

It's a 2-bedroom, unfurnished bungalow on a (mostly) social housing estate. It's OK for me for the moment, but I only really need a 1 bed or large studio property. When my credit rating has improved (1 year), if I'm still in the UK and haven't fled back to south-east Asia, then I'lll probably downsize and save perhaps 100 quid on the rent each month...

Australian pensions paid to persons living overseas are indexed, but the government aged pension is means tested plus other restrictions for those who apply from overseas.

Good luck with all of that 👍

I am 69 now but I am expecting to have to move back to to England when I get older probably due to health reasons, I am not under the illusion I can live in Phuket for life as health as I have seen with others can take an unexpected turn.

But I will enjoy being in Phuket until then.
