I catch this train on a regular basis with my wife and kids.

Unfortunately, quality control is basically non existent in Thailand.

Whoever was involved in setting this crane up and (if they) signed off on it should go to jail for 20 years

Quality control was not the problem. it was Safety Protocols not being enforced, thailand has a plethora of safety standards which companys Must by law should adhere too but dont !! for several reasons costs money ! corruption! no safety officer ! lack of forethought ( no risk management) no action by gov inspection live's are cheap in thailand

Sadly tragic events such as this occur from time to time everywhere, not only in Thailand as some on here are trying to suggest.

Literally take your life in your hands the moment you step out the door in this country.

its astonishing but not limited to Thailand , the odds of the cane collapsing just as the train was passing must be infinitesimal likewise trees getting blown over on to passing cars.

We call it murphy's law in the UK

In this case though the railway really should have been closed whilst work proceeded

Yes, true. All over the world. There are a few differences when comparing some places to Thailand though. The big Tai Po fire here in Hong Kong late last year is one many possible examples. 16 quickly arrested by the police (contractors, including the one who told the Fire Service that the fire alarm would not be impacted by the works - Oh YES it WAS!!), 12 subsequently arrested by ICAC (anti-corruption), and a massive investigation into all levels of this (politicians to the supply chain to those falsifying test certificates). And this issue caused many follow-on investigations all over HK, with many more arrested as a result. Could be called "shutting the stable door when the horse has bolted"? Yes, of course, but the stable door is already being re-designed. Can't say that about Thailand just now, and (happy to be contradicted) has it ever happened.

Fears of Further Collapse as High-Speed Rail Crane Structure Shifts Again

image.jpeg

Pictures courtesy of responders

Authorities on site faced tense moments after a high-speed rail construction crane was observed moving again, raising fears of a possible further collapse. The movement prompted immediate evacuation of rescue personal and a warning to all personnel in the area to remain alert, as the situation posed a renewed risk to officials and responders working nearby. Safety teams were instructed to monitor the crane closely while maintaining strict precautions.

The incident occurred at an active high-speed rail construction site where a crane is positioned above existing rail infrastructure. The crane’s renewed movement was detected during ongoing operations to check the wreckage and removed remaining bodies, prompting concern that structural instability could lead to another collapse. Officials warned that any further shift could endanger workers and interfere with operations already underway at the site.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the crane appeared to shift unexpectedly, triggering concern among response teams. Officials issued alerts to those involved, urging heightened awareness and careful movement around the area. The warning emphasised the need for vigilance while assessments were carried out to determine whether the crane could be stabilised safely.

image.jpeg

The situation has highlighted the risks associated with operating heavy construction equipment in complex environments. Safety personnel responded by reassessing exclusion zones and reinforcing communication among teams working in close proximity to the crane. The movement of the crane also raised concerns about the possibility of further structural failure if conditions are not brought under control.

Professor Dr Amorn Pimarnmas, president of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand and a professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Kasetsart University, explained that the equipment involved was a movable steel truss known as a launching truss. This type of structure is used to construct high-speed rail bridges segment by segment, advancing forward as each section is completed.

image.jpeg

He stated that the he believed that the part which fell onto the train was not the entire truss, but a support base placed beneath the steel structure. Each support base weighs between 20 and 30 tonnes, making the impact catastrophic when it struck the train travelling below. According to Professor Dr Amorn, the exact cause and if it was the support base failure, have yet to be confirmed

image.png

Professor Dr Amorn noted that similar launching crane collapses have occurred twice before in Thailand. These included the elevated road construction project at Lat Krabang–On Nut in July 2023 and the Rama II elevated road project in November 2024, both of which also resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

Relevant agencies are expected to continue closely observing the crane and evaluating its stability. Further action will depend on engineering assessments and safety evaluations conducted on site. Officials have indicated that updates will be provided as the situation develops and once the risk of a secondary collapse has been addressed.

Key Takeaways

• A high-speed rail construction crane was seen moving again, raising fears of a second collapse.

• Authorities warned all personnel at the site to exercise extreme caution.

• Ongoing monitoring is underway to assess safety and prevent further incidents.

Get a grip. No need for hysteria. Thailand does not have a significant history of these types of incidents. The last crane collapse in Thailand was a result of the Myanmar earthquake land tremors. Metal fatigue or an improper installation happens.

Would you have a rant about this crane collapse of 2023 in NYC? It occurred over busy streets.

There hasn't even been an investigation and you are rushing to judgement. Give the engineers a chance to investigate.

No hysteria from my side, just stating how it is! What you mean is the last "reported" crane collapse!!!

You are nowhere really safe in Thailand.. Nor on the roads, the trains even in shops or restaurants nearby a street...and everywhere else.. but who cares about safety. It costs money and you need to think about the dangers...

There seems to be a worrying culture in Thailand of not completely separating construction and other works from live traffic

From the later reports it seems that one of the end supports fell, possibly whilst the launching gantry was being re-positioned.

Sadly, we are not likely to see the actual report in the mainstream media.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Guys, you must really like to hear yourself, you think your yapping is going to change the thai government? How many years has this kind of construction not already been going on in Thailand and in Bangkok ?

KARMA, that's what it is.

So a construction crane ‘fell’ at the exact moment one of the 12 trains a day was passing? Terrible coincidence, I expect. What are the chances of that!

Death Toll Rises to 28 After Crane Falls on Train in Korat

image.png

Pictures courtesy of Khaosod

The death toll from the rail crash has risen to 28 after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Sikhiu district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, on 14 January 2026. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to recover bodies still trapped inside damaged carriages, while authorities work to identify victims and treat dozens of injured passengers.

image.jpeg

Nakhon Ratchasima deputy governor Wijit Kitwirat said there were 86 casualties in total, with 64 people injured. Eight of the injured were listed as critically ill, including residents from Sung Noen district in Nakhon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham, Surin, Nonthaburi and a one-year, ten-month-old girl who suffered severe brain trauma and was transferred to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.

image.jpeg

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Sikhiu Hospital for forensic identification, while rescue foundations, including Huk 31 Nakhon Ratchasima, assisted in transporting remains back to victims’ home provinces free of charge for religious rites. Deputy governor Banlang Waiyasiri later coordinated a multi-agency rescue operation, but searches were temporarily halted after engineers warned of further structural instability on the elevated beam. Officials confirmed that several bodies remain trapped, prompting the revised death toll of 28.

image.jpeg

A railway staff member, Mr Thirasak, said the train departed Krung Thep Aphiwat station at 06.10 and was carrying more than 200 passengers and staff. He described feeling a powerful impact from behind and rushing to assist injured passengers in the second and third carriages. Local residents reported hearing metal snapping and a loud crash moments before parts of the crane fell onto the passing train.

image.jpeg

Khoasod reported that the incident has disrupted rail services on the northeastern line, with the State Railway of Thailand cancelling Train No. 22 from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok and diverting services via the Kaeng Khoi–Bua Yai junction route. Special rescue trains have been deployed from Bang Sue to assist with recovery, while investigations continue into the cause of the collapse and the safety of ongoing construction works.

Key Takeaways

• A crane collapse onto Train No. 21 in Sikhiu killed 28 people on 14 January 2026.

• The crash occurred at a high-speed rail construction site operated by Italian-Thai Development Plc.

• Rail services in northeastern Thailand remain disrupted as recovery and investigations continue.

I was out there a few years ago and wondering why they were building an elevated line when they could have laid track on the ground.

Bet its a joint Thai-Chinese worksite.

Same company who were involved with building which collapsed in Bangkok after the earthquake in Myanmar ?

A few seconds later and the train would have passed, we may never have heard anything except in the local or specialist construction publications.

A few seconds earlier and the train would have ploughed into an immovable object at 80kph with even greater loss of life.

In this world one can never tell what's around the corner ☹️

Yeah I did think the motion of the train under it may have had something to do with it falling over.

Usually, the trains slow down. Then again, in the middle of nowhere, who knows? Got a feeling another construction company is about to go underdue to lawsuits.

I never understood why and how the construction crews (they are called) and companies are allow to construct anything above when "live" move trains, cars and people are below. What do they expect would happen. I am surprised that it does not happen a lot. There should be a website that keeps track of construction accidents during any project. Where is it??

Wasn't that a Chinese company what was related to the building that fell down in Bangkok....just saying.

Thailand: At least 22 dead as crane collapses onto train

Rescuers have pulled out all passengers from the train as authorities pledged a thorough investigation into the incident.

Thanks, very much so!

Too much bad karma in Thailand recently!

Terrorist Firebombings in the South

Devastating deadly floods in the Hat Yai Region

Speedboat carrying 50 passengers and crew crashes into fishing boat, sadly killing one.

And now this tragic train accident - what next?

If anyone thought that construction practices and safety standards have been raised, or even reviewed, after the building collapse in Bangkok that killed AT LEAST 95 people (they don't know the full number) then they are very much mistaken. This will not change until the Supervisor and Contractor/s are charged with murder and spent 20+ years in jail. But when people like the owners and managers of the illegal Mountain B nightclub where 26 people died get only 3-5 years in jail (and out in 2-3) nothing will ever change in this backward incompetent and corrupt country.

One might have hoped or imagined no such re-positioning was going on whilst a public train was moving in direct line of fire below? Surely safety protocols must control only one activity at a time in a dangerous work site, ie. either the crane is working/moving or the train is? Not both at the same time!

Sure was. Joint Venture.
"The contractors were the joint venture between Italian-Thai Development and China Railways Number 10 (Thailand) Co., Ltd.[10]"

Chinese company in Rayong made the faulty steel that caused that collapse.
