Did you notice Shopee.co.th prices differ for Thais and Farangs?

For some time now, I've stopped buying expensive items from shopee.co.th, instead asking my Thai girlfriend to buy them for me. The reason is that the prices she's offered are always significantly lower than what I'm entitled to. And the difference is not negligible.

Today we checked the prices of 215/60R17 tires. I connected from my computer, and my girlfriend from her phone. My girlfriend's price was 21,800 THB for four tires. My price, at the same store and for the same tires, was 24,800 THB. A difference of 3,000 THB.

We took screenshots of the different offers.

It's really annoying, and even more annoying because it's systematic and consistent for every item I check. I advise anyone to check the price Shopee charges to a Thai acquaintance before buying expensive items on Shopee.

Her quotation says "price after discount code", and yours doesn't. Anyone can get the discount codes on the Shopee app, regardless of nationality. A few times a month there will be a code giving a 2-3k price cut on items selling for 20k and up.

You just mentioned two things I don't trust in one sentence: Android and Chinese designed and made phones 😊

More likely to be web v app prices. I used to do all activities on the desktop but now only put items in the shopping cart and use the app to place orders in order to get free delivery and discounts e

And that's the reason ......... Phone app orders get significant discounts. Pc orders get no discounts.

There’s also the possibility that your partner is eligible for a discount due to her purchase history and you’re not.

I don't doubt your observation, but your conclusion is nonsensical. Different prices for different account histories and devices, not for different nationalities.

I don't look at Lazada much, but a search sent me there today and it literally says "SAVE MORE ON APP"........

That's what Agoda says, too. But the opposite is true.

Previous comments widely demonstrated that Shopee pricing policy discriminates between app-based customers and laptop-based customers and therefore, yes, my conclusion was incorrect.

But it's your statement that is nonsensical, as anyone who has spent a few years in Thailand knows too well. In Thailand prices are often different for different Nationalities. And while in my own country prices may differ for Students or Elderly, children or large groups, they apply to all nationalities. In Thailand price discrimination is often based on Thai / Non-Thai nationalities.

Possible, but the many comments here points to a difference between customers using the App and the laptop. It is plausible.

Mr Mrs has a business selling products on both Shopee and Lazada. I just mentioned this thread to her and the purported difference in prices depending on the nationality of the buyer. Complete nonsense, according to her. She's been selling on each of these platforms since 2020 and is on the various sellers groups. She's never heard anyone so much as mention this before and says there is no way in the buyer's control panel to set prices based on nationality.

Many thanks for confirming. This has been widely clarified in the many posts that predate yours. Prices varies according to the tool used to access Shopee (Mobile phone vs laptop-desktop) and not of the nationality of the account holder.

Shoppee sees Apple fans happily paying double for the same phone like android , so they figure the same psychology works on their platform too. it's about exploiting brand snobbery not a nationality.

If true, I can confirm the same applies also to Microsoft Surface users... ...but not to iPhone users (my Msr.'s phone).

Just a few of months ago I found out by chance, that I could get significant discounts on Shopee on the phone-app, which wasn't available on the website. Furthermore I found out, that I had unknowingly also bought Shopee's VIP subscription package, which costs 54 THB a month and gives access to further discounts and free shipping from some sellers.

Correct. The app has better prices and additional discounts. The advantage for Shopee and Lazada is that customers spend more time on the platform by using the app and most probably order more. And Google and Apple receive commissions to include the app in their app shops. The commission is different for every app shop provider.

Just the opposite for me.

I spend a lot of time on the Shopee website to search for what I need, and add it to my cart.

The Shopee app is only used to collect vouchers and place the order, never to search for anything.

I don't bother with Lazada any more.

Always check the Vouchers Tab at the top of the main page, and claim them all, weekly.

Restart the App on your phone to enable them. I've gained big savings this way.

They do everything to force you to use the app rather than your desktop. The reason, they would like to have only one program to maintain. I live in an isolated province, Loei, with a low supply. Hence, the need to shop online to buy what I can't find locally. Their app is crap, I'm 73 years old and most of the time I need a magnifier to read what's written on that piece of s..t, I'm using my desktop 99.9% of the time.

My business sells on Shopee and Lazada. The selling price is set by seller only. The platforms can offer discounts on products or services and absorb the cost either solely or in collaboration with the seller (eg a campaign). Therefore Shopee cannot change prices based on device types.

In my OPED I gave photo evidence of the exact same product, sold by the exact same vendor, at the exact same time, for two different prices by Shopee, accessed from an iPhone and a Microsoft Surface.

Ok, different people, different preferences. The thing is that that at certain special sales periods there will be a popup at Shoppee and Lazada giving you an additional discount only valid for a few hours. This comes in handy when I want to order a higher price item. I have saved thousands of Baht this way by ordering at the best time.

My last purchase was a video camera where I got an additional discount of several thousand Baht in addition to the Flash sales price. Unbeatable value which I would have missed at the website.

I never order from Shopee or Lazada on the web for the same reason you questioned, but I don’t think foreigner/Thai prices have anything to do with it. Anyways I always use the app to place an order.

Many times, I have seen the exact item, from the exact same shop, considerably cheaper on Shopee than Lazada. I hardly ever by from Lazada any longer.

Thanks. I hadn't realized this yet, but the Lazada App, unlike the Shopee one, isn't geo-phenced. Therefore, I downloaded it to my phone. I access Lazada on both my phone and my computer, whichever is more convenient.

I can buy goods in Europe and deliver in THAILAND with Lazada on a iPhone

Yup, got to love marketing. I got a great deal on a Fuji lens this way, in fact back in November I could have got a $850 Fuji prime lens on Lazada for about $600.....unheard-of anywhere else on the planet.

I never order anything online. Give it to wife and let her deal with it ffs

Good tips in this thread. I do the same now, browse on laptop and checkout on the app. The price gap is real.

Another thing that helps: keeping a wishlist of items you are watching and waiting for the monthly sales (3.3, 4.4 etc). Prices can drop 30-40% during those events. My wife and I use aoneena.com to track gift ideas with Shopee links, makes it easy to compare prices and share lists for birthdays and holidays.

With the 3.3 sale coming up Monday, worth checking your cart prices now vs then.
