Crane Drops Prefab House, Crushing Neighbour’s Home in Khon Kaen

A crane incident in Khon Kaen municipality led to a prefabricated house being dropped onto a neighbouring home, causing severe damage but leaving the occupant inside alive in what was described as a miraculous escape. The incident occurred at around 11am on January 23, 2026, in Soi Klang Muang 9, off Klang Muang Road, and resulted in one house being rendered uninhabitable.

The crane, mounted on a truck, was being used to move a one-ton prefabricated house from one compound to another when it failed to hold the weight. The prefab structure fell directly onto a nearby house, while the crane itself toppled over on its outriggers, having exceeded operating limits.

Contractors and a supervisor at the site rushed to the damaged house after the impact. They managed to pry open a window and rescue the man who had been trapped inside the collapsed structure. An inspection later confirmed that the house suffered extensive structural damage. Around half of the building was destroyed, personal belongings were lost and the property was deemed unsafe for occupation.

The survivor, Mr Nakarin Chinbut, aged 29, said he had just stepped out of his room to prepare for his afternoon work shift when the incident occurred. He described hearing a loud, explosion-like sound, followed by dust and debris filling the area.

Mr Nakarin said he called out to his dog but received no response and found himself unable to escape on his own. He was eventually freed after rescuers forced open a window to reach him.

He added that he usually walks through the area of the house where the prefab structure landed and had been about to go there to check whether his mobile phone had charged. Mr Nakarin said he believes an amulet of Luang Pho Chana Chanthasaro, which he always wears, saved his life.

Ms Nipa Hinla, a relative of Mr Nakarin, said she was doing laundry when she heard the loud noise and ran outside to see their house collapsed. She believes the incident occurred due to an error by the crane operator. Ms Nipa suspects the crane should have been lowered while lifting the heavy prefab house over power lines to reduce the load. She said video footage of the incident appears to show a mistake by the operator that led to the extensive damage.

The main concern is compensation for both property damage and emotional distress. The crane company stated only that its insurance provider would inspect and assess the damage, raising fears that any payout might be insufficient and force the family to seek additional funds and legal recourse.

Amarin reported that authorities are expected to review the incident, including technical and safety aspects of the crane operation. The assessment by the insurance company will determine compensation, while the affected family has indicated they may seek justice through official channels if necessary.

Key Takeaways

• A crane malfunction caused a one-ton prefabricated house to crush a neighbouring home in Khon Kaen on January 23, 2026.

• The occupant, 29-year-old Nakarin Chinbut, survived after being trapped and rescued through a window.

• The family is seeking fair compensation, with concerns over insurance coverage and operator error.

Strange that these amulets never seem to prevent the 'accidents' happening in the first place!

The guy who makes those amulets coordinated the whole thing.

It didn't save his house.

Was the dog ok?

Good question.

Saw this on the tv news. The crane was uneven ground and had no packing placed under the outriggers to help stabilise it. Add the boom being extended to its operating limit the inevitable was always going to happen. Luckily only one person was in the house which got destroyed. Another example of insufficient training or just plain laziness, in the preparation and evaluating of the task, by the crane operators.

What is it about Thailand and cranes at the moment!?

What a way to drum up business! 😃

Cranes have safety devices such as Load Movement Indicators giving visual and/or audible alarms to the operator if load limits are exceeded. In this case the alarms were either ignored or had been disabled.

Toppling crane incidents are recorded all over the world and are not restricted to Thailand.

Of great importance is proper training, testing and certification of crane driver/operators which seems to be lacking here.

In further developments the crane operator has sent the householder a bill - for installing another storey on his house…

Umm. Maybe Step 1 should have been evacuating anyone in the path the crane was going to take with the suspended house.
