I was reading a topic on this forum

It reminded me of some people I know who have had a bad fall in recent months.

1, slipped on the tile floor in the kitchen, broke his hip, never made it out of surgery.

2.simple mis-step outside 7-11 broke both his shoulders, incapacitated for months.

  1. Misjudged the stair steps, head injury, badly bruised.

Guys as we age we really dont bounce well, dont think "Im fine" chances are if you are not actively taking precautions, you could be next!

Be careful out there, it can happen so easily.

Build some preventative exercises into your daily routine.

You really are not as stable as you probably think.

    I think the ability to easily break your hip is a sign of your impeding doom, rather than the cause of it. If you were healthy, your hip wouldn't have broken.

  • This is the type of injury that most people never recovery from. Once my grandmother broke her hip jogging it was all down hill after that.

I was at the movie theater walking down the steps to my row with hands full when the lights went out and it was total darkness. At that moment I forgot if I was on the short step or the long one. I was totally disconbubberated and almost fell.

Great reminder, thank you! We don't bounce back as easily even if we think we're not old.

But you can stop with the insults, eh. I've never been accused of being stable.

Statistics say the average life expectancy of someone over 70, who breaks their hip in a fall, is about 6 months.

There is a useful daily balance exercise for reducing the risk of falls. Balance on one foot, left and right, for 20 seconds.

If that can't be done, do the same exercise while placing a finger tip against a wall for support.

The daily training in either mode for elderly people helps prevent falls.

I know a guy 70s who broke a hip recently cycling, back up and cycling within a few weeks, fitness helps

Oh please go to the gym at least 4 times a week

I can't believe the unfit farangs im seeing here in Pattaya

I believe that there exist stats that if you're diabetic and break a hip, you won't make it out of the hospital. I would claim that most falls are caused by lack of a sense of balance and/or dizziness, and that much of this can be prevented by daily exercise.

The sock test is good - go get a pair of any socks you have- now put them on your feet and then take them off again without support or sitting down.(or falling over)

That'll tell you how your balance really is. 😀

  1. Stand on one leg.

  2. Hands on hips.

  3. Time how long you hold the position without putting your foot down.

Just don't fall and break your hip doing this

i got smoked by a soi dog 6 weeks ago, 4 broken ribs, major bruising and swelling. They tried to drain it but couldn't. Its mostly healed, the ribs are just now decent.

The ones that die first are the ones that don't move.
Keep moving, doesn't matter what you do. Just do it.

I had a bycycle misshap last we that left me flat on my back in a big oil spot on the street. My first thought was - that was fast!

Took a hit on my shoulders, left elbow, & left hip/butt area.... Broke the fall with my elbow which was gouged by the concrete street.....

A little stiff for about a week....

I managed to get home, change shirts, and attend to the 10-Baht sized wound without my 3 girls seeing me....

I felt like I did after playing tackle football into my 40's....

Fortunately, none of the afternoon walker/joggers/bikers saw me.... I'm 78....

I do bike, home gym, & dog walk every day....

I do a few minutes each leg. Many people will fail this exercise due to a lack of ability to counterbalance at any time. You can push me off balance and I will still stay balanced on one leg.

Very true and as they say, always watch your step, avoid those flip flops at your age and move around only in good quality sneakers. Not only it prevents from slipping but can also save you life in you step on some nasty stinging animal by mistake.

Are you able to successfully put on your shoes and socks while standing?

Flip-flops are awful to walk in and offer no protection. I don't understand why people wear them.

Older people have lower bone density, and the problem is worse in women.

why surprised, I am not sure of statistics in other countries but I regular see that in the US today, 70% of adults are listed as obese and/or have diabetes. 70%! Need to lock up the food producers there as they have led the public astray IMHO. I an American adult am nowhere near fat or obese, but lived most of my adult life in foreign countries obviously with a healthier diet. That too is MHO

Don't sit 12 hours a day.

The body responds to movement and light load, low level intensity throughout the day.

Take up gardening?

Stop sitting too much.

Older people in the Blue Zones are active, but it's not intense activity.

It's low level activity throughout the day.

This keeps the bone density from degrading.

Gardening, walking to the supermarket, maybe light sports, and a bit of lifting (but doesn't have to be heavy).
