Art Auction On Bedlam

Featured Replies

The nonrepresentational object is a bent spoon that somewhat reflects the twisted world we're living in by the renowned artist Raro d'Abuse, a scholar of French not-so-much-impressionist Duchamp. The title of the work is "OHHHH" as it somewhat resembles the Thai character sala ohhhh. Twist yer head an ya might get it.

We auction off this contemporary sculpture by public auction in this thread. Best offer within the next two weeks or so will be honoured, shipping is extra. No refunds.

Along with the object made from finest scrap metal comes a certificate of authenticity issued by the Lake Mabprachan Resort.

The proceeds will be donated to the Pong hangover relieve foundation.

I used to possess another piece in that series. It was wrought, the artist confided to me, with a faulty bathroom door lock. I was left to only guess at what may have inspired it's creation.

i start the offer at 1 THB

hope you can afford the shipping then....

I would need assurances that it's not just a cheap, throwaway "Geller".

I raise the offer to one part used tea bag (Liptons).

I'm sorry but I am not convinced that this is a genuine Raro d'Abuse piece. I think it is most likely a copy, a good one at that, by the Pattaya school of artistic failures. Many such copies have been churned out at little studios along soi Buakhao by budding artists convinced that one bent spoon is much like another.

The only way these fakes can be detected is by immersing them in som tam puu for 24 hours. If the spoon is totally dissolved it was almost certainly a genuine d'Abuse and would have been worth over a hundred thousand (VND). If it survives intact it is either a fake or the som tam is not the real deal and you should react by starting a Weho-esque thread in general topics complaining about being overcharged for duff food from street vendors.

Have you been in touch with the Pompidou Centre as they may be interested, judging by this work by Fernandez Arman ( sometimes known as Armand P.Arman) :-

I've seen copies of this art form made in China. It is called, appropriately, "Twisted Spoon", comes framed or un-framed and sells in the 500 Baht range.

Look for them at the Made In Thailand center.

:o

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

I was present for the creation of this masterpiece, and can verify it's veracity as a genuine Raro d'Abuse.

"OHHHH" has overtones of Marcel Duchamp's "art of the ready made" movement as exemplified by Duchamp's masterpiece Fountain which to quote Wikipedia

His Fountain, the urinal signed with the pseudonym R. Mutt that shocked the art world in 1917, was selected in 2004 as "the most influential artwork of the 20th century" by 500 renowned artists and historians.[3] Reference

I foresee this piece of art becoming a contemporary of Fountain so bid early and bid often. We do not need another starving artist hanging around. :o

I'll buy you a beer for that one....

With only 1 baht and a used tea bag bid so far, you may have a hard time buying that beer !

And as I seem to have numerous similar items already, which I can authenticate, having personnally created them, I would say good sir, that yours appears to be a copy of an already famous design.

Unless there is a hidden map, written in invisible ink on the obverse side of the artifact, leading to a fantastically large treasure, that will require many more clues to unravel (and a lot of staged danger), then I'm afraid that your artistry is worth no more than 1.25 baht, one (very) used flip-flop (left foot), and half a birthday cake candle !

that's the highest bid so far....any takers?

Raro you truly are an artist, but you should know even when you are pissed that a spoon is useless for removing beer bottle tops. :o

The main problem with your artistic endeavour, is that it is too new. Art is never truly appreciated until long after the artist has been reincarnated for the 4th or 5th time (i.e. long dead).

It is only recently that living artists have been realizing values for their works that used to be reserved for those who've passed on hundreds of years earlier.

I suggest burying your piece in the backyard for 50-60 years. Inscribe a map with the location, seal that inside a box with no lid. Hide that in a Mayan temple, that can only be found by deciphering the ancient writings of Aten in his lost city in Egypt.

When the spoon is finally found, it will be priceless ! :o

(as in, without price at all !) :D

Although the sculptor had admittably a few drops of muse-inspiring liquids imbibed, the spoon became victim of a birthday cake...only then Raro d'Abuse realized the inner nature of what used to be a spoon and started under the applause of his admirers a live happening entitled "OHHHH".

The result is the bent spoon that we auction off.

Ok well you're supposed to defrost the cake first. :o

So that's why all the knock-off shops in Patong's OTOP market were closed yesterday... They just received a shipment of OHHHH 'originals' and got the word about a BiB raid...

(I'm surprised no-one has offered-up a spoonerism. Oh Ho.)

Sorry - have to withdraw - last bid way over my limit :o
