BANGKOK, 17 May 2013 (NNT) – The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) announced that it arrested the leader of a gang of bank robbers who had stolen around 20 million baht from a Swiss bank and fled to Thailand.

DSI Director-General Tharit Phengdit said Enzo Greber entered Thailand on March 19 after masterminding a bank robbery. The arrest was a collaborative effort of 3 agencies, comprising the DSI, the national police headquarters, and police at the Swiss Embassy in Thailand.

According to investigators, Mr. Greber used the money from the robbery to buy a house in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khirikhan to live with his Thai wife. Aside from the house, officials discovered 4 million Thai baht in various bank accounts, 60,000 Swiss francs, 13.4 baht-weight of gold ornaments, and 19 motor vehicles that Mr. Greber purchased with the money stolen from the Swiss bank.

Mr. Tharit said the assets would be returned to Swiss authorities, and Thai officials were investigating how the man managed to smuggle the money into Thailand.

Thai authorities arrest Swiss bank robbery suspect

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police have arrested a Swiss man charged with robbing a bank in his homeland before fleeing to live with his wife in Thailand.

Department of Special Investigation Director-General Tharit Pengdit says police found 42-year-old Enzo Gerber on Thursday in the seaside resort town of Hua Hin, 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Bangkok.

He says Gerber is accused of robbing a bank in Bern on March 19, taking $670,000 in cash at gunpoint. Another suspect was arrested by Swiss police. Thai police seized 60,000 Swiss Francs ($62,266), gold ornaments worth $8,829 and about 20 cars and motorcycles at the $168,000 house Gerber shared with his Thai wife. They plan to freeze more than $100,000 in his savings accounts.

Tharit says Gerber will be extradited to Switzerland for prosecution.

"Mr. Tharit said the assets would be returned to Swiss authorities, and Thai officials were investigating how the man managed to smuggle the money into Thailand."

Thailand is top ten destination for international money laundering because it's easy to bring money in with few/zero questions asked.

I think you're both referring to Hangover part II

Either way, a good likeness

Has anyone else noticed that most of the criminals paraded at these photo shoots, Thai and foreign, are heavily tattooed?

What do people think of the idea that, at Immigration, any person presenting themselves with such "body art", should be subjected to special questioning, with the presumption that entry be denied unless they can prove their bona fides?

Oooh yes, I can see how that works.

"I see you have some tattoos."

"Yes."

"You're not a criminal are you?"

"Oh no. I am studying muaythai here."

"OK, that's good. Have a nice stay."

He is going to get one more tattoo it will say "LOOSER" and will be across his forehead.

BTW he looks very black skinned for a farang, wonder if he's been taking yabba?

He should only be given a short jail sentence as the picture clearly shows his remorse (that he got caught). And of course the seized assets such as his Thai home and baht are clearly the property of Thailand so these proceeds should be given to the Thai government (for further distribution among worthy authorities...public servant pay is low you know).

I would say people heavily tattooed may not indicate that they are criminals but rather "STUPID IDIOTS" logic could indicate that criminals who get caught are stupid? and because they are stupid they also like tattoos.

Yes as far as I know some of the chemical substances found in yabba increase the effects of ultra-violet rays, hence a dark tan

He is stupid for getting all of those tattoos. Being able to pull of a bank robbery in this day & age is next to impossible but he did it. Yet getting inked up making himself so easily identifiable is what foiled his heist.
