So I was heading into the big city tomorrow and wanted to try and find some Beer Laos. Not only because it is the best brew in SE Asia, but because there is still, after more than two weeks, no beer here in Rhek Thum.

But in searching for BL, anywhere in Thailand, I can't find it. Further, I have read what I suspected a few months ago when it disappeared locally, in Nakhon Si Thammarhat.

To wit, that a major Thai brewer, who shall remain nameless except to mention their beer's name starts with an S, ends with an A, has lobbied the Thai government hard to restrict import of Beer Lao, because it seriously ate into their profits.

First, anybody know if the report is true? That BL is no longer imported?

Second, anybody seen Beer Lao? Where?

That would be a blow. Luckily I live in Cambodia where it is widely available. Oh, and I will sit by the Mekong in Luang Prabang this weekend quaffing a few. Want me to send you a photo, OP?biggrin.png

Rats. I've never seen it in the Makro here.

Dark, too. Oh, my.

They had plenty in the Black Swan week, but it's hit and miss at Makros. I've had the best success at Pattaya and Lad Prao.

villa market and foodland have it

Big c extra on Pattaya klang has it too,not the dark though

I must be blind, never noticed it at any of these places!

OP, I think that what you wrote would fit in with how I expect Thai monopolies and cartels to react to the AEC. Free trade and an equal playing field are alien to the Sino-Thai business ethic.

Picture from just 45 minutes ago, taken at Big C Extra Pattaya.

They had both the regular (43THB) and the dark one (48 THB)

Yep. That's why I originally assumed it had disappeared here. Does make me wonder why it's still available in BKK and Pattaya. Must be the much stronger demand.

If you guys haven't tried Beer Lao, you might give it a shot. Maybe not outstanding, but it's a big departure from the local stuff.

Thaicharoen Supermarket and other shops around Thonglor have it, both dark and the regular. Tried it after reading about it here, very good beer.

"no beer here in Rhek Thum."

555, you live in an area named rectum? Sorry mate, that one made me laugh. Oh, and sorry, no news on beer Lao.

Which one is Thaicharoen?

Starting to wonder if Beer Lao is just struggling to meet demand?

A refreshing drop is the Beer Lao White... Available (recently) in Tops and Foodland (Porto Chino - Samut Sakhorn)... I'll have to have a look again tonight, all this talk of beer has made me thirsty :P

You know, some of you guys could design Thai furniture. Your talking about drinking a cold Beer Laos, knowing I'm suffering here.

Sadists.

Nonetheless, I've just been informed I'm invited to BKK next week. I didn't mention I said yes, thank you, only because of the beer.

Just a bit off-topic : How are Cambodian beers, by the way ? You like them ? I don't think I have ever had one; I would love to try at least one of them though. Can Cambodian beers be found in Bangkok ?

For the OP : I think many bars in the Nana area (and possibly at other similar places) have got Beer Lao (small bottles of course). Mind you, the last time I was in Bangkok was this February. So, maybe a shortage has affected these places too.

Cambodia, Angkor, and Anchor are all run-of-the-mill lagers. Very drinkable when cold. Dark beers are very popular here but I don't care much for them. IMHO the best beer is Kingdom, it is heavy on the hops and very nice. Not sure it will stay around for long as it is expensive and therefore shunned by the locals and the cheap-ass expats.

Never seen Cambodian beer in LOS.
