I prefer places where the people enjoying themselves are younger, not exclusively male, and sometimes even Thai.

There are lots of young Thai girls enjoying themselves in Nana!

Yeah. I'm sure they'd be there even if they weren't getting paid.

Maybe not, but then nobody works for no money. It's important to enjoy your work.

I've lived in lower Sukhumvit for 3 years and I love it. There's always something happening, it's an eclectic mix of cultures, and I never feel afraid to walk the streets at any hour. The biggest problem is finding space to walk with all the street vendors. Rents may be on the high side but living anywhere else would be boring.

This is what I don't understand. What exactly is happening? This is not NY or London. Anything that happens in Bangkok is always inside the shopping mall.

What do you do in NYC or London and please don't say museums and the ballet lol . End of the day its the same as bangkok except its full of women that will ignore you....get my drift wink.png

I lived in NYC and visited London and grew up in Sydney. Bangkok leaves them for dead in every way IMO.

Im in Nana area 10 years now and whilst its not perfect its never dull thumbsup.gif

Oh I dunno

I'm in London right now and I must say, there are still lots of stunners around on the tube and walking around Kensington, Notting Hill, Earl's Court, King's Road and, contrary to Thaivisa folklore that swears Western birds are all sour-faced trouts, a hell of a lot of them are smiling (could be the unseasonably mild weather) and friendly . . . . well, to me anyway.

Gotta love London

Was on Soi 4 a few weeks ago and it was time to fly back to Phuket.
Flagged down 3 taxis and none would use the meter.
Said it was 500 baht to Don Muang.
Lo and behold, a cop was walking down the street.
So, I asked him: "since when won't the taxi drivers use the meter anymore?"
He flagged one down (traffic was slow, the guy didn't have much choice), and pointed at me and said: "Don Muang, Meter!"
I got in, the guy went 2 or 3 blocks to near the Nana BTS station, stopped the car and said: "GET OUT!"

I went up the BTS, steps, bought a ticket to Mo Chit (43 baht) and took the airport bus for 30 baht.
Took me about 40 minutes total.
<deleted> those taxi drivers.

The topic is about Nana. The stunners in Kensington and Earl's Court who are smiling at you may not go with you to a dirty room and have sex for 50 dollars or whatever the Nana girls are whoring themselves for?

I'm trying to think of the last time I saw a cop walking down the street in Bangkok.

GoGo girls have told me it's the best job they've ever had. Making great money compared to working 48 hours/week in a factory for peanuts. Are you a doofus?

No, not all of them. But they like the money they can earn. Are you one of the "fools" who thinks they are all forced into it? Perhaps you don't get out much.

Seems to be plenty of them that do enjoy their work.

Maybe not the sex with old fat guys part, but that's only 5 minutes.

Plenty of them certainly enjoy the drink, drugs, and party bit of the night.

Quite a few are more than happy with the nice bed, Tv, room service and drinks fridge part.

I love how people think they are better than other people because they don't like an area.

Nana indeed is a tourist area that isn't really a part of Thailand, pretty much like Buckingham Palace and Oxford street in London. Bloody tourists swarming all over the place. Who in the right mind would want to travel to London and go to Buckingham Palace, they will charge you £2 for a 50p can of coke. Right rip off. A place a true Brit would never be seen.

It worked out pretty well for Kate Middleton. laugh.png

A right Dick Whittington story she tells oh yes she does!

Kate Middleton is from a very affluent family and from a very proper part of England, she is hardly a rags to riches story.

Ah yes...the irony that exudes from Soi 4.

I don't understand what's the fuss...It is what it is , a diverse area with so much going on. Okay I understand why some of it doesn't appeal to many and that's fine..We all, have a choice. Me I quite like the area and like to,stay for a few days in Bel air on Soi 5. Very handy for the area and the many nice places to eat further up from Soi 8 onwards. Interesting place for people watching and mingling. Where else can you sit at 3 am at a kerbside bar around the corner from Nana plaza having a quiet drink with the day just starting off for the locals passing the time with I must say a very pleasant Lady boy who works in Patpong ago go but for 6 years worked in London area as a escort..fascinating listening to her story, bought her 2 drinks, normal prices say 200 baht total and talked for maybe 2 hours. No I don't !! by the way but there people like we all are and when I left to go back to my hotel I felt guilty for the time spent with her and offered her 1000 baht as I had really enjoyed the time talking and she wouldn't take it and said she enjoyed the chat and I'd bought her some drinks and that was enough..I tried again but she wasn't having it..Never tried to hit on me, and no I'm not ugly lol, but it ended up the evening really well... The following day had a old school teacher of mine aged 76 ! coming to visit Thailand and before we travelled to my house in Lamphun I showed him round. Where better to show the diverse and cultural differences of a country than Nana area.. Whistle stop tour, along the way quick visit to Patpong !hate the place but just showing him it..several outside areas bars etc some nice Thai food then into Nana Plaza to,people watch! He couldn't believe it Yes it is seedy as such but where adult and you have to see this side of Thailand just as much as the temples and more traditional cultural sites. Took him upstairs as he wanted to see a ladyboy so,into the first bar on the first floor don't know the name where he was gobsmacked as one of the LB came and sat down dropped her bikini top and proceeded to chat away for 1/2 hr or so. Again a part of Thai life that you have to see once in your first visit just as much as you have to enjoy the food and sites. Up the road into Bangkok beat and some real good Thai/Filipino bands then off to Check Inn 99 to finish th evening..We could have done so much more but what variety and experiences for my friend... I like the area ,not sure about living there but for 4/5 days a great variety and fun times to be had..

I truly like to visit ....for a few nights. I don't wear a halo all the time, and I have lived in seedier places in the Philippines (15 years). After one finally settles down with a nice lady and decides not to spend every single night being propositioned and buying ladies drinks, it is quite fine to look at a clean garden and experience people that do not spend their waning years in red light districts. A return to the norm...a bit of discipline, exercise, fresher air, normal relationships...etc.

I do recommend it for sex tourism, voyeurs, city dwellers who love the nightlife, etc. I don't personally want to do away with that scene, at all. Just don't want to live there day in and day out.

It is a part of growing tired of the ritual....first you want all that, and then it becomes "over the top". I prefer to save those places for occasional visits and a a "change in scenery". We all love a thai cutie dancing on the table...and entertainment bustling around.... just not every night!

You don't 'have' to see that side of Thailand at all. I've been coming here for fifteen years and never felt the need to.

As for the idea that it's part of Thai culture? That's funny.

Isn't it better to see all sides? You can't deny that to many people overseas, it is seen as part of Thai culture. It does exist, even if you never visit and have no idea about what goes on.

Why would you want to see absolutely everything even if you know some of it doesn't appeal to you?

I know the sewers must lead somewhere, but I have no desire to visit the sewage works just to say I've seen them.

I don't think Thai sewers are unique or part of the tourist culture (I may be wrong!). Like it or not, Nana (and the other "play" areas in Bangkok) are, hence a thread like this. I guess, you're just commenting because...............?

It's no surprise really, and not different to any other tourist spot....throw in the sex and drug trade, and you have Thais only mission to to separate tourists from their money. That is what they DO. I encountered similar pushy unfriendly Thais on Samui 15 years ago. Much better to live away from these areas and visit only occasionally...when the need arises biggrin.png
