RAYONG: -- A 66-year-old Australian man and his 10-year-old son were electrocuted while trying to fix a water pump at a small  swimming pool inside their home in a housing estate in Muang district of Rayong province.

The father was identified as Mr Andrew Fenwick, and his son Jason Krailop Fenwick born by his Thai wife Somrudi Krailob Fenwick, 41.

According to Pol Capt Kaweewuth Boonruang, deputy investigation inspector at Rayong Muang police station, the 8×6×1.5  metre swimming pool is on the front part of the single home while the water pump is inside a storage room near the front gate.

The bodies of the father and son were found near the pump. The father lied dead at the pump with his right hand still holding a wrench while his son lying dead with his left hand clinging to the iron gate.

Met Andrew on a couple of occasions, one at his son's birthday party last year. They are a lovely family and this really is a tragedy.. Young Jason used to be in my lad's class at school. 'First' part of the funereal proceedings is at 4pm today in Rayong.

RIP Andrew and Jason.

I would say he should have left it to a qualified electrician, but my experiences with them in Thailand have not been positive. Had to draw a wiring diagram for the one who installed my oven and explain what an earth (ground) wire was.

Hard luck to the Aussie and his son. He probably had no DIY experience as only licensed electricians are allowed to do this work in Aus.

You hit it on the head sadly.  I respect electricity whole heartedly as I don't know much about how it works but know exactly what it is capable of.  And I know mixing electricity and water is best left to a professional.  When my sump pump failed in my underground pool motor area I didn't even think twice before calling a professional.  The German Water Team in Phuket.  Turned out no Germans showed up at the house.  Only Thais who did a half ass fix for a premium charge.  I had no choice but to do it myself.  Calling a professional here is a lot easier to say than do.  The only thing the German owner does is collect the cash and ignore requests for follow up repairs to subpar work.   Keep the DIY projects to roofing and carpentry.  Maybe not, my father fell off a roof and broke his back and then put his thumb through a table saw blade.  And he was a contractor for 30 years.  Or so he claimed.  Very tragic loss for this family I am sure they will never fully recover from it just to save a few bucks.  Be safe is the message here.

Very sad, In my old house in Pattaya, I put in quite a few new sockets and lights etc and also had a few buzzes in the past doing so.

Just after moving in I said to my wife that I was going change the wiring and put in a fuse board as there was only one main breaker, after looking in the loft at the wiring I decided against it, It was all over the place but working. In the end I put a better breaker in and also separate breakers on the outside/ metal stuff plus earth rods.

RIP to the family.

I don't want to be seen as insensitive, or a pedant, but I do want to be of assistance to the sub-editor.

The word "electrocution" was coined at the time of the adoption of the electric chair and is a contraction of the words electric execution.

The sub-editors' scourge is the tautology, and look what he has gone and done.

Terrible.

At least the third electrocution while working on pumps reported in the forum over the last couple of months.

I would never open and touch/fiddle with the pump before disconnected, mains off!

Always have a professionally installed RCD to protect the whole system.

yes and before installing this always check your grounding in thailand, where we use a 15 foot copper bar and 4 sq wire  they use 3 fth bar and 1sq at the most

adding the lowest fuse used mostly is 35 ah yep u can get fried easily

o by the way what is the word for professional in thailand ? i gues something like,,specialist in  wrapping black tape first class!!

I doubt this will be investigated and if it is we probably won't hear the outcome but it would be interesting to find out. The son was apparently found still gripping the iron gate which would lead you to suspect that it was the gate that passed the current to the son. How the gate became charged I would like to know.

Everybody can make wrong decisions but here it appears this gentleman made a cumulation of wrong ones :

* went visibly into a place where there is a main electrical problem and wet conditions without having the necessary knowledge to fix it

* did not correctly protect/isolate himself before acting

*did not cut off power correctly before putting his hands in

*was with a  child into this dangerous area

* was probably not using isolated tools to work on this

And eventualy more deadly decisions.....

Sad  consequences . So sad

The gate was grounded, like the pump should have been.

I had a friend electrocuted in similar circumstances. Luckily for him he survived. Recommend fit SAFE-T-CUT to all distribution boards.

recommend turn of the mains switch first, simple. If he was Thai everyone would be saying typical stupid Thai.
