Video: "Yes Mate!" Taxi driver picks wrong person to threaten with a knife

BANGKOK: -- A taxi driver may have picked the wrong person to threaten with a long knife - the driver turned out to be popular presenter "Pa Ngem".

The presenter - also known as Sakdeena Rakudomkarn, 54, is well known for his catchphrase "Khrap Jao Nai" (yes mate).

He was driving along in northern Bangkok and had just passed Pahonyothin police station and was outside SCB Plaza in Ratchayothin when the driver of an orange cab cut in front and stopped.

The taxi driver got out of the cab with a long knife and threatened the TV star ordering him out of his car.

The taxi driver was completely brazen, unconcerned that he would be seen by passing members of the public.

Pa Ngem stayed put. But most of the altercation was caught on a dash cam video that he posted to his Facebook fan page.

Yesterday he went to report the matter to Pahonyothin police. A lot of media showed up including TV cameras.

Yanyong Santipreecharat speaking on behalf of the Pahonyothin cops said that they knew the identity of the driver and named him as Bunsanong Banyong 40. They know the taxi company he is registered with.

Yanyong said they could only fine him 100 baht for having a knife but would charge him with menacing that carries a month in jail and/or a 1,000 baht fine, reported Daily News later yesterday.

They are yet to have their man in custody.

Pathetic.

Another maximum penalty acing as a deterrent to others !

I suspect if a farang were found threatening someone with a knife, the penalty would be somewhat higher than 100 Baht. Ludicrously small fine. When was that Act and the penalties last updated, 1870?

unbelievable.  i wonder what was  "yes mate" s  offense?

so basically its ok to threaten someone with a knife

The utterance of words, directed towards or about some special classes, will result in a harsher sentence than assault with a deadly weapon. Yes, Amazing Thailand.

If there were a functioning emergency call center and a functioning police force, the culprit would have been pounced upon and arrested post haste. Sadly, neither aforementioned entities seem to exist here.

Well that explains the prevalence of knife crime in Thailand, try carrying a knife in the UK and see what happens.

Yes, can be up to 4 years custodial. But, does it deter? It appears not with knife crime increasing by 14% p/a in UK.

But 100 thb fine just ridiculous! This country need a serious shakedown.

Another quality BKK taxi driver, another reason to choose Uber!

I wish it would all end but it will continue.  It seems now there isn't a day that goes by that they don't make a ass out of themselves with their so call millions of rules that have no effect or due to lack of real enforcement.

It is no wonder a value on life is worth no more than 300,000 baht in general.

Yeah, you're right, it's started to go up again over the last couple of years. The decrease in "unfair" stop and searches is just coincidental of course. As always with crime, it's not just the penalty but also the chances of actually getting caught.

With a pack or weaponry.............seldom a fight whit bare knuckles @ one on one.

Deeply disturbing mental cases.

Doesn't it say 100 baht fine for having the knife and the penalty for threatening with the knife is 1000 baht and/or a month in lock up?

Thai law is a joke with disproportionate penalties, selective enforcement and of course political agendas

Hit or miss when utilising the services of Thai taxi drivers. You just never know if you are safe when getting into a taxi here.

This story is predictably typical in that nothing will happen when making a report to the Thai Royal Police.

Is that also true for a foreigner, a 100B fine? I wanted to carry pepper spray to threaten attackers but that is outlawed. Threatening with a knife is much less serious.

Never known anything so crazy 100 baht fine for waving a knife about . Also a person that is a carrier of people can have a big knife in his taxi seems to me 6 months in prison should be more appropriate.

those damn pesky taxi drivers up to no good again. :shock1:

TAT better make up a 'good samaritan taxi driver returns 100,000 baht'  story. :guitar:

police ought to stop all taxis and do a weapons check. and anyone caught with a concealed weapon,  that is 1 month in JAIL. oh forget what i just said. there would be NO taxis on the road

Well, you gotta have some perspective. Driving without a license is a serious crime and the fine is 200THB. Possesion of a knife is not as serious and thus only 100THB.

If you have B1000.

Don't threaten them with an "E-Cigarette" though. That will land you 10 years in jail.

My GPS took me through a very poorly signed bus lane the other day and I got a 500 baht fine, I wonder if I got a knife out if I would have got an extra 100 fine or a bullet through the chest.

He should get his license revoked big fine some jail sentence and mental and drug testing but that's crazy europe

A lot of British thugs do and use them to kill, yes they end up in prison but I don't think the victim gets much satisfaction. The number of knife crimes continue to rise in the UK so I don't think harsher penalties stop them, they aren't aware of thought in the first place.

So if I get a huge knife, then run around my local village market waving it about threatening people, I will only get 1 thousand Baht fine and that's the end of it?
