Hey! What's a black monk doing in our village? Ugandan on overstay dons robes

Villagers in Sa Kaew were suspicious when a black African monk appeared at their temple.

Someone called immigration suspecting that he was up to monastical mischief.

Sa Kaew immigration chief Benjaphon Rortsawat and colleagues from the tourist police hot footed it to the temple of Wat Klong Yang in Phakha sub-district.

There they found Sasaree Baker, 32, whose Ugandan passport had no sign of an entry stamp into Thailand.

Furthermore his ordination papers were not in order.

He was asked to show what he had on under his saffron robes - he had shorts underneath, a no-no for any self respecting monk.

The PIBIC system was used to discover that Baker had in fact entered Thailand on the 9th of January at Suvarnabhumi and was eligible to stay on a TR visa until March 9th. He had overstayed by five days.

He had in fact used another passport to enter the kingdom.

Baker said that he came to Thailand to study religion but when his visa ran out he decided to don robes and go into hiding so that he would not be deported.

But his black skin seems to have been a bit of a giveaway to the folks in the village of Ban Klong Yang who reported him, reported Daily News.

He is now in custody facing charges for being on overstay and impersonating a monk.

so you can be a murderer, a thief, a child molester, a politician, a drunk, a rapist..............but just not black ?

  • Thailand is rapidly becoming a soulless, colourless, and boring police state filled with snitches, stool pigeons, tattletales, finger pointers, and block wardens.

Um, no. When criminals are found in the monkhood, they are promptly defrocked and prosecuted. Maybe you're thinking of some of those news stories. Background checks, in the form of police reports, are required when applying for ordination.

There's no fooling the villagers of Ban Klong Yan, these crafty beggars don't miss a trick!

Should have bought a couple dozen of these first............

Well no, you cannot just go to the shops , buy some orange robes and be a monk whilst in the country illegally  .

Astral travel.... perhaps resolve the question.

I'm unclear what his objective was...coming to Thailand...becoming a monk would not allow most foreigners to pursue their passions...

Probably came to Thailand to work or something , had no money or job and thought becoming a Monk would be a good idea .

He should have made his way to the US...they somehow manage to take care of just about everyone who enters...

I'd qualify lol

The villagers were suspicious, the cops and immigration noticed the ordination papers were wrong but the abbot and monks at the temple never noticed?
