Can't download add-ons to Firefox

This install enabled a restore of my extensions. Not sure if it's a definitive fix and applies across the board. We'll see.

I have installed a few, for some routers used the -wrt- program (like johng already said) and

many another routers I used a different (easier and ready to use) firmware which has everything included like VPN and the add blocks, but these doesn't work on many types of routers.

The best answer you will get is when we know the name and type of your router, then we can say if it is an easy to do or hard.

It is the one 3BB gave me for my fibre connection. I know that I cannot put Express VPN before the router.

Unfortunately for me it's not, but maybe that is because I am running the ESR version. (Extended Support Release).

 

But fortunately the about:config trick works !

Studies also sends all kind of telemetry to Mozilla, so if you don't like that Firefox does that, you have to disable it. But ONE thing, when you disable that NOW, the fix it send about the Blocked Add-ons will also STOP working. So better disable it when there is a Definite FIX.

This fix works fine if anyone has a problem remaining, AND it doesn't entail agreeing to send all your info to Mozilla AND it retains your Extensions settings.

Simple and takes 2 minutes:

 

 

 

If you have the regular build (not the nightly/dev one) then the xpinstall.signatures.required set to false doesn't fix this - at least for some users. But I got all of my add-ons back by going to about:debugging. Check the box to enable add-on debugging. Then click Load Temporary Add-On. Browse to your Firefox profile in appdata.

To do this, I first went to Control Panel/File Explorer Options/View/select "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives". AppData will then show up when you browse the C Drive:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<some random shit>.default\extensions

In the extensions folder there are .xpi files, those are your extensions that you had. Load each one and don't close Firefox until they fix this.

 

I've used it twice because once I did the fix I absent mindedly closed the browser at one point, which entails doing it over.

Yes it does, and you can keep the setting as it's safe. Only thing it does is to ignore the check of signatures on the add-ons.

Firefox has already rolled out the fix via the Studies setting in the browser on most of its main desktop versions, including older versions than the current one.

 

The end user doesn't have to do anything for the fix to occur (in other words, it will occur automatically). But, the end user DOES have to have the Firefox "studies" feature enabled under the Privacy and Security settings in the browser. Once the fix has been run and your extensions are working again, you can disable the "studies" setting again if desired.

 

 

BTW, for anyone confronted with this problem on the desktop version of the browser, they're specifically recommending that users DO NOT start trying to uninstall and reinstall versions of their extensions. Just leave your system and disabled extensions alone until the fix occurs.

Well, it does 'fix' it. I'm on 60 ESR.

When you check for updates this morning with Firefox an update should be waiting that fixes this problem.

 

On FF ESR I am now at 60.6.2 where previous it was 60.6.1, FF 66.0.3 is brought to 66.0.4

I've been keeping out of this discussion because I'm using version 54.  Why?  Status bar, plus a few other add-ons that I use every day that have gone to the wayside (like Tab Mix Plus).  Also I use a few external programs that are executed by FF and the browser's interface to them is no more.  I found out I am not alone.

My guess, from reading all the scuttlebutt of the past few days, is they were trying to shut down use of previous generations of FF once and for all.  There's a lot of kicking and screaming, but I'm only getting it second-hand as I don't do twitter, FB, etc.

I have about 40 add-ons, and about 10 have been shut down in this purge.

 

Yeah, I use chrome and a few other browsers as well, but FF has been my default browser for a long time.  My use goes back to Netscape in the 1990s.

I'm happy with Waterfox. Tab Mix Plus, status bar, addon bar, foxclocks, quickdrag, scrapbookX,  and rest work great with it. I have an old version of FF around but never use it now. Was using Palemoon; it's good but Waterfox has even greater compatibility w/ old extensions and maintains a repository.

Thanks for that JSix....did'nt know about that browser, shame mutirow bookmarks (FF legacy add-on) doesn't work on it

I changed version to 60.6.1 and toggled on aboutconfig.

 

Firefox was telling me that my Avast antivirus was corrupt, and blocked all my saved passwords.

Seems to work on my Waterfox. I abbreviate all the names of the bookmarks on the toolbar, however, so I don't really need it. And what with multirow TabMixPlus, I don't have that much window real estate anyway.
