Third world people just have to learn from the first world.  

I agree, my dad used to work quarantine and its surprising the stuff some people travel with.  Australia is too fragile ecologically.  But dont give me that bull about caring for the farmers....the govt did <deleted>-all during the drought.

Australia is free on many serious animal, plant and wood diseases and the government is determined to make sure it stays that way.

 

It's not a new policy, it's been in place for 30 years that I know of and it's always been taken seriously by the various government agencies at airports etc.

 

Like many others I've heard many stories of visitors trying to bring in loads of fresh meat, fruit and more.

 

If the authorities need to do a new campaign to reinforce the laws they should without doubt.

Totally with you on that and we in New Zealand have a similar environment to you guys and we need to keep it that way.

 

I really do believe that the fines should be huge for bringing in banned goods/foodstuffs, with possibly jail time if necessary, because is the only way that these people will stop bringing this rubbish into the country, and believe me I have seen suitcases full of banned plants and foodstuffs at customs in Auckland airport.

Years ago I was part of a support group for new Thai students coming to MElbourne to study, they were all warned verbally and with easy to read brochures (Thai and English) well before they left Bkk, but time and again caught at Melbourne airport with loads of fresh food, spices, and more. 

 

The usual response after it's all confiscated and fines paid 'but I'm a student there should be special rules to make it all OK for students',,, etc etc.

Some of the revolting, fetid, food matter found secreted in bags has at times caused me to take a step back. Meat, dairy, eggs and other high risk foodstuffs are commonly found. I've seen plants complete with root ball and soil which the passenger wanted to try to grow in Australia. Also flies, beetles and various exotic flying insects sometimes crawl out of what these people plan to eat.

Invariably they don't declare the items, want to argue their right to keep it and are horrified when told they will be fined.

IMO the fines should be raised greatly to provide a real deterrent, and very bad cases should result in refusal of entry. It's on a par with people carrying child porn with the damage it could cause. Those people aren't allowed entry.

Contraband and drought are unrelated in this video it seems, except to those with a noticible resentment.

As long as it sealed, and in the original container, and you declare it, you should be ok with it, although Marmite is available in some supermarkets .

 

That includes seeds as well, just declare what you have then Customs decide, no fine, but plant material, soil, meat/fish/chicken and smallgoods in most instances will be confiscated.

I wouldn't worry too much in your case. You'll probably be sent back on attitude alone.

Know all about this from watching airport shows in Australia. It seems information that would be great to put on an Australian TV station broadcasting into Asia but unfortunately the Abbott government closed Australia TV just before it started broadcasting into China.
