Justified? No, I felt wonderful and still do today. I got my product plus an 800 baht bonus for teaching her one of life's little lessons. Stop playing with your phone and pay attention to your responsibilities.

I suggest you get your phone out and snap her picture. If that doesn't change her mind send the photo to the manager. If it is intentional it's likely happened before to other customers. Hopefully, the manager takes action.

It is true. When  a staff change is made the till balance is checked. If the operator is short so are the wages.

More often than being ripped off I have been given wrong change in excess. If I am aware of it I always make a point of it being checked. Not always easy because  some get a bit agro thinking I am suggesting I am being short changed. Not often have I got a thankyou either but I put that down to embarrassment.

I was like you to. Hand out change in pocket walk out. Its when the first one happens that you you REALLY pay attention to your change by looking at the change displayed on the till and then counting mentally with the kid behind it as she counts them off and that's also how you start catching others by being alert although over 12 years its only happened a handful of times... Funny though I have never been paid extra ..ever LOL

Weekly betrayals and rip-offs have been the story of my life for the past 9 years in Thailand. My first experience was a simple nail in a tire, but when the attendant took the tire into the back of the shop to fix it, he came back with a fist full of huge nails and told me they all came out of my tire, so the bill was three times what he had quoted me. I took my Honda City to a repair shop to have a scratch sanded and painted on my rear aftermarket bumper skirt. Instead of buying me a new one he brought back a used one that didn't match and was terribly worn, unloaded it and sped off. My list of ripoffs is endless, but I digress. 

What's really bizarre is when you discover that a Thai has given you too much change and you bring it to their attention and want to give it back to them. They look at you like you came from another planet, then they take you through an endless process to correct the mistake making one feel like a fool for being honest. Try this at Tesco or Big-C and you will pull your hair out before it is over!

try this for size, my mrt card is quite old and recently started routinely failing on random turnstyles. slowed me down a lot. tried multiple machines to finally exit at station.  i go to the ticket employee and tell them the problem. i ask if they can change the card. they have low interest because their reader shows i have top up in the card. they tell me my card failed because many others used the turnstyle. i counter and tell them yes many others have no problem before me and after me. the gal tries to escort me through the manual gate. i tell her i just arrived and exited already and i dont need to go back in. she looks perplexed.  i repeat to 2 employees, multiple recurrent failures on multiple machines multiple days.  reluctantly they change the card for me and make me pay a fee that i dont understand since their card failed. worth it to have a functional card and get away from them.  ps;  all spoken in very clear thai.

In some bars they give you a token marked 1000 or 500 and take it back when they give you your change.  I've seen staff take a photo with their camera on occasions.

  Well, here's a positive experience.  I was eating at Kiss in Jomtien and when I went to pay the bill I thought I had given the server two 100 baht notes.  Instead, I had given her one 100 baht note and one of the new 1000 baht notes.  Anyway, the server was honest and pointed out my mistake to me.

I've found that 7/11 have cleaned their act up over the past 12 mths, where previously very often a receipt wasn't given with your change and you couldn't check it. 

And around that time on TV many others complained as well. And at times if you knew you purchased 7 items and you have to then ask for a receipt, to notice it had 9 items you'd know you had been ripped off. Sometimes they'd scan a barcode behind the counter for other items not purchased. And if they retain your receipt they'll refund those items to themselves. Then the stock levels always remain correct. Happened on more than one occasion at one branch. 

 

But recently I'm offered a receipt at all times and at different branches. So a new company enforced rule I'm sure. 

 

As for being under charged I know that the entire shift are docked for any shortages in the till takings. If they're on 300 Bht per day it can eat into their low pay. 

 

Once at Big C for my fortnightly shopping I had 2x boxes of beer in my trolley with the rest of my other shopping, and the girl only scanned one box of beer. I only noticed when I got home. Scored well that day.

Yes i was, because about 3 weeks beforehand I was short changed in the same shop. Didn't realize until i was home. "Karma"

Before I made any payment in foreign countries. I usually took at least 30 minutes to shop around while doing monitoring and observation onto the cashier counter personnel behavior towards their local customers and foreigners customers.

I would first get a few small item and pay for it in order to get a small change.
Then, I went back to get a few more and come back to the queue and pay for it again.
And finally, I went back again to the next rack and get several item and pay for it again.
The cashier counter personal at times asked why I did that?. I told them, I love Thailand and I love to see hardworking people like them. They just smiles. Lol.

The only time my change was wrong here was at a 7/11 near Asoke BTS. The girl was very grateful when I pointed out she'd given me too much and gave her the excess back.

All that to avoid someone who can't count short changing you a few baht.

Short story. Amazon in Kanchaburi PTT. Two hot coffees ti ni. Paid with 1000, got change for 500. Complained. Staff called manager, sequence from cctv emailed and shown, 5 minutes max, I was wrong, They were right. No doubts possible, apologies etc., all smiles and wais. No big deal.

Had a haircut in the UK. When I arrived home I found I had been given a five quid note extra. I phoned the barbers and asked if they had a problem with their cash up. They said yes, we are five pounds short. I drove back and returned it and the girl was near to tears as she had been held responsible. Nothing to do with Thailand but the same principle applies.

I agree with others on check your gf for not backing you... I had one user like that before I got married when I got scammed in 7/11 for a 99 baht umbrella for 200 baht when the sticker on it said 99 baht cheepy umbrella no barcode she typed in 200 ( I see they are all 99 baht in 7/11) .   Pointed it out to gf who thought I was making a fuss didn't back me up...thank god that b*h has gone

 

Wife knows if we get scammed its her money as well.. real partners work as a team

Gave 1000 baht over at market once for cheap 50 baht juice x2... woman gave me change of 500.. we got a few steps away and I noticed...me and wife knew it was a scam....got back to the woman who straight away coughed up the rest. Wife said she was embarrassed people could be so dishonest

I am starting to wonder what is wrong with me...never been ripped off, never gotten into an altercation, never had a bad experience with immigration (I am a patient person) Thai people smile at me and I am not funny looking in any way, they often try to start a conversation. Hardly ever carry my passport. I smile at police, they smile back. 

I am really starting to develop an inferiority complex.

I've been here 8 years as well and its happened to me dozens of times, short changed, items missing from bag when get home... cashiers given too much change 2 times and I gave them it back at Familymart

 

It could be location dependent as well mind.. this happened when I was in Pats which I'm not anymore as of recently so I will find out soon if its the same nationwide.
