Self respect Appearance

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I realise there was a similar topic where the opwas talking about the appearance of farangs re their clothes, but I would like to get a bit deeper into it.

One thing that clicked me into changing myself was a friend who told me I look like a slob the way I dressed and presented myself.

I guess being in Thailand I can pick and choose who I wanted or paid so my “ self respect “ didnt matter.

Overweight, Long scruffy beard, extra large clothes, smelly ,not till I got older that I realised I wasn’t respecting myself and nowadays many Thai bar girls know that and actually use that to their advantage.

A couple of years ago I was in a cafe up in Pattaya, A American guy came in,in his 60’s and sat opposite to me, He was quite “goodlooking” for his age, suntanned complexion, muscular, clear skin, neat hair, clean t shirt etc

He told me he had just finished at the skin shop for his monthly facial.

of course being a scruffy bearded guy i thought thats not very manly .

He then told me when he visits Pattaya he goes to get his nose and ears waxed, his facials , and legs waxed etc .

My question to all of you is , would you describe yourself as a Mansexual?

How many of you take care of your appearance in Thailand or you have gave up and sport a overweight belly, long beard, smelly armpits ,nose hairs etc

I always remember my late Father was always neat and tidy,no matter where he went, nice collared short sleeve shirt, dress shoes etc, ......me ?

Im opposite, but i have started to change my appearance for self respect.

How many of you now have lost your self respect as you get older ?

it takes time unfortunately to look “good” , whether that be a daily gym visit, or taking time to shave, brush teeth ,floss, put on moisturiser etc etc

I always remember when  i was young seeing those old guys with nose hair thick as a brush.

Do you have a regular hygeine routine? Shower everyday or twice? Use a certain brand of soap only ? Or any soap will do.????

I find Dettol or Sapoderm soap the best in Thailand

Do you use a certain body spray? Smell nice? Wear Deoderant?

Or it doesn’t matter to you what deoderant ??

I like Brut 33

Do u shave everyday,  nose hairs, ear hairs, brush teeth everyday ,use Listerine mouth wash ? What about flossing?

Do you shave your ball area ? Use body skin moisteriser

What about your face skin,? Do u get facials? Do u use a face night cream?

hair ? Do u comb your hair or take care of it

tattoos ? Has tattoos make you look unsightly towards older age?

feet? Do u see a podiatrist for feet issues? Moisterise your feet ,foot massages?

what about your belly if your middleaged ?

Does being overweight matter to you now?

exercise ? Everyday????? Sit ups?

Clothing ? Do you wear polos or shirts with a collar or any old t shirt?

clean clothes or throw them away if they have stains ?

Does having good looking clothes matter to you or now you couldnt careless?

is there clothes you wouldn’t wear?

do u use only name brands? T shirts ok or just polo ?

To tell you the truth I couldn’t get nice clothes to fit me being overweight, and i was particularly lazy to shave especially in Thailand because girls didnt care ,

but i do remember one bar owner actually saying to me to me and he was serious, to come back tomorrow with clean clothes rather than stained shirts,so i was a grub .

please state your age as this is mostly for middleaged to older guys

To address our OP.

60 year old Brit.

Shower twice a day, every day. EDIT - I should have written "Shower at least twice a day" ????

Shave (face only) weekdays, lazy at weekends.

Teeth, mouthwash twice a day.

At the risk of being accused of smelling like a teenager, I use Axe.

No mosituriser.

I'm definitely not a clothes-horse and I do tend to get maximum life out of clothing.

At work it's smart casual, chinos, short-sleeve collared shirt (no tie) or company/project polo (with hi-viz, site boots and hard hat).

At home, shorts (madam makes them from too-bad-for-work chinos), T or polo (clean every day).

Certainly overweight, not obese according to the doc. Beer belly, yup, serious exercise, nope. Do I really care, no not really.

I would not be seen dead wearing a wife-beater (no shirt, no problem at home).

I look like this (with Wifey) ????

Only when I have a rugby game that day...????

No, I would not describe myself as a mansexual, whatever that is.

Shower 2 a day morning/evening, more as required.

Face shave everyday.

Teeth 2 a day. Morning/ evening

Aftershave/deodorant (not from 70's but not a slave to brands)

Wife takes care of hair-cut with clipppers very short and she also takes care of nose and ear hair at the same time. She also cuts my nails when required on hands and feet.

I like to wear "sports" style clothing around the house/casual plain T-shirt and shorts and trainers, More formal polo type shirt and trousers shoes if going out in the evening.

I am overweight but have lost 15kg over the last 12 months, being  obese/ overweight as you advance in years can lead to all sorts of added health complications, so when I turned 60, albeit a bit late, I did start focussing more on my health and also exercise regularly and watch what I eat too. I don't drink alcohol or smoke.

I think you mix too many things together.

Weight, having a shower, having clean clothes and the type of clothes are independent from each other.

Personally I like to walk around in jeans and t-shirt because it's comfortable. For whatever reason I don't like shirts. Maybe they remind me of working as a sales guy a long time ago with shirt and tie.

My clothes are mostly clean. Mostly, because sometimes eating something (like noodle soup) they are not 100% clean anymore. I won't run home to change because of a few noodle soup spots.

I shower at least once a day, often more. My hair is not styled, but it's clean.

All these things are easy to do. It does not take too much effort to shower and wear a clean (t-)shirt.

But then there is the weight. I definitely have more than enough of that. And the reason is that I like good food and I don't like to exercise. I don't want to eat less. And I don't like exercise so I don't do it. Loosing lots of weight would take a long time and it would make me unhappy (no more pasta, cake and ice-cream?) so I don't do it. That's something different compared to above.

Personally if I meet people I don't really care how they look and dress. But I wouldn't want to talk with someone who is so dirty that he smells.

It's not true that you can't lose weight/stay slim and not eat pasta, cake and ice-cream.  I eat all of those and drink beer every week, and I'm slim.  The key is to eat those products in moderation and to ensure that you exercise to burn off excess calories.

In fairness, dress and personal hygiene standards in rural Thailand are pretty lax. Nobody's putting on deoderant and spritzing cologne before a long day on a tractor. Most farmers' in my area have just a few changes of clothes, one pair of sandals, rubber field boots, and maybe a special outfit for ngan liangs. My neighbor goes for an early morning jog in sandals.

Taking care of yourself in my area means protecting your eyes and skin from the sun, and wearing protective equipment when handling farm chemicals, not plucking your eyebrows or having your butt waxed. Of course, taking care of your health should always be a high priority, but if foreigners living in a rural environment relax dress and hygiene standards a tad to blend in, not much wrong with that, at least in my book.

I like to walk around the high-end malls in Bangkok whilst Farting and Belching loudly.

Just to annoy the locals.

Don't care.

I'm an old mod. Looking sharp is important to me. One thing i hate about Thailand is not being able to wear the full array of European winter clothes. Im 65 and diet, run exercise etc. I despise the Aussie flip flops and vest look. In thailand manicures,  pedicures, waxing etc are cheap. So i do em. Nose, ears and hollywood pubic waxing, ( chicks dig it).  The problem with some farang,  especially Aussies, they have gone abo, gone native, kinda primitive.  Still in a state of rebellion i guess. Shit dress codes and shit American rap, dreadful music will probably drive me out of Thailand.

Thailand is hot and I understand why people need to dress comfortably

but one can be comfortable and dress dignified the two are not mutually exclusive.

A comfortable polo shirt, and smart shorts for the day, always long pans when out at night.

i used to walk around in flip flops, shorts, and t-shirt,

thinking i was on holiday so why bother with how i dress ?

my then gf kept bitching daily over my unrepresentative appearance.

it took many years until i realized she actually meant it,

she did give a shit how i dress.

these days i dress properly every time i leave my hotel,

my ex is unfortunately gone tho, so she wont see it.

now i wish i had dressed like she wanted me to

I always wear clean clothes and dress nicely when going out at night, little more relaxed during the day. It's always nice to see a sharp dressed man , someone who has self esteem and cares about himself. This can be lacking a lot in Asia. Men with body odour and dressed poorly reflect a negative image. And the gals surely don't like it no matter what they tell you.

zz top: every girls crazy bout a sharp dressed man!

the heat for me forbids the wearing of jeans.

I am properly dressed in shorts, shirt and flip flops. Why would I wear long pants and regular shoes?? Why..?

For those who think this is slobbish I want to say it's because you can't carry it off to look stylish.

a wild guess is your gf never raised the issue,

i came to the conclusion they all want us to dress up,

some say it and some dont.

fo me it didnt really make a difference, so why didnt i fulfill her wish ?

these days i prefer to dress properly,

i got sick and tired to death of walking in flip flops

If dressing up means long pants and reg. shoes then I decline, I might have some nice shirts sewn, I don't wear cargo shorts, I don't do tank tops.

those long pants are actually cool, i went to an indian tailor

and he informed the different qualities of different materials,

i picked those he described as cooler, and they arent any warmer then shorts

No Thai woman with any respect for herself wants to be seen with a foreign (removed) Why is that so difficult to understand?

well, i was on holiday imo, and shorts under a palm tree

was kinda the very picture of being on holiday in thailand.

i regret it deeply now tho, it was her wish and that should have been enough reason, specially since i dont have a principle around it. the biggest catch is that i didnt recognize her wish, i thought it was bitching for the sake of bitching
