Most bars have more staff than customers, gogos probably 5-1. had a businessman sit beside me this winter in a gogo in pattaya, he commented on how can these bars stay open, no customers in most,

I remember when they first built Soi Borkhow road you could get a 4 storey shophouse there for 1 million baht.

Who knows what they will be worth by the time this crisis has finished.

I see restaurants have now been added to the shut down list.

I was getting some take away from a few of my favorite places.  I hope they keep the kitchen open, but it will be hard going when they make money out of alcohol sales as well as food sales.

I like Thai food, but I don't want to eat it 7 days a week.  ????

A friend said today that his local restaurant was told they could stay open if they paid 25k to police.

Police must be getting short of cash, i was wondering when their new money making ideas would start

That's a disgrace.

I hope all the "tea money" dries up, and when Pattaya gets back to normal, owners refuse to pay.

With more rules and restrictions comes more opportunity.

True, but there will be no profits to be made here for quite some time, so what's the point in opening, particularly in relation to the tea money monthly "bill."

For 27 million, you can buy a super business , restaurant, bar, etc in the South of France in a great location, earning you lots of euros !!
Not only S of France of course, loads of great places with lovely weather , where you can actually earn money !!!

When all this has finished, world wide, I would say the prices will have dropped, significantly, in Europe also.  Particularly Italy, France and Spain.

I spoke to a bar owner today who told me he would not be reopening, regardless of when the shut down is lifted.  He said he has taken out all the stock and plans to have a party with his staff, if or when they all come back, but has told them there will be no job in Pattaya waiting for them with him.

I will not name the bar, in case he hasn't tied up all lose ends as yet.

He told me he considered himself lucky, when compared to others, as his lease was up for renewal towards the end of the year, and not the start of a new lease.   I asked if he discussed things with his landlord and he told me his landlord is  "****."  So, I guess there was no options offered to him by the landlord.

He said he will be keeping some of the appliances from his bar, and has offered what is left to friends who are also bar owners.

He ran a small bar that had a good atmosphere and pleasant staff.

I wouldn't have called his bar a favorite place, but I did enjoy a few warm up drinks in there on many occasions.

Hope other landlords are more understanding than his.

Many bar owners will call it quits and Pattaya will never be the same again. I predict that WS will be bulldozed to the ground and Chinese bars and casinos will be built there.

For the vast majority of bar , business owners, this is the end, even when things open up, it will be a long long time before things return to normal, and lots of tourists start coming back.

They will be operating at a loss.

times were getting quite tough with MOST businesses before the virus.

I think most owners will have no problem locking the door so and walkng away.

survival of the fittest, there were hundreds and hundreds too many bars etc as it was.

See what's left after Armageddon!

Very likely that Pattaya will almost completely become a Chinese playground, and yes WS might be the first, but not the only, area to fall. For those who are skeptical of this, I point to Sihanoukville which within one year, two at the max, had become unrecognizable from its earlier state as a quiet seaside resort town catering to mostly Cambodian weekenders and a smattering of foreigners wishing to escape the hub-bub and heat of Phnom Penh. Substitute Pattaya, Thai, Bangkok in this last sentence and I think you get a pretty good idea of what Pattaya is to become. The writing is pretty much already on the wall.

Possibly.......But Pattaya will NEVER be quite the free-for-all that Sihanoukville was.....And Pattaya will not be sold for a song and a dance to the Chinese like Sihanoukville was....

I see more Indian restaurants closed with furniture removed. Also Pitini has closed up and outdoor tables gone, no sign on the front. They didn't embrace takeaway as Hungry Hippo has done so well

Plenty of Indian restaurants left who have yet to take down the sign and clear out the furniture.......Almost none of them are doing take away.........Someone's still paying the rent or they would all be out of business .....

Would be interesting to hear what landlords are doing around Pattaya, walking st, Buakhao. If they don't do a rent postponement or renegotiation then businesses should just throw in the towel as no rational person will take on the businesses for 6 months or more

"rational" is an unknown word here

Well, like I said, he considered himself lucky, as his lease was due towards the end of the year, but didn't have kind words to say about his landlord.

Like you say, even if you are half way through a 3 year lease, if your landlord doesn't want to negotiate, you may as well close up.

Why operate for the last 18 months of the lease, at a loss, just to keep a lease that is up for renewal, just when the tourists may start to come back?

The landlords will play a big part in what is left open for us expats here in the next few months.

What are the Nightwish group doing in Soi 6? I'd expect them to throw in the towel unless the rent across all bars is binned

Who cares what they're doing, they've destroyed that street compared to what it was like back in the day.

No announcement on their website.

So much for evolving into an investment group.  That won't be happening any time soon.

Damn.  Cafe Pitini is closed.  I liked that place.  I hope they will open again, when all this has come to pass.

I guess not.

But like so many other businesses, it will depend on the length of the closure and how understanding their Landlord is?

If not for them the street might have gone long ago, replaced by another chinese hotel, think about that

It was never going anyplace prior... quite the survivor is the six, despite many attempts to put an end to it. Not sure NW have improved business.
