BANGKOK(NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, has instructed security agencies and related units in all provinces to prepare measures to prevent road accidents during the New Year holiday period.

Gen. Prawit attended a meeting with relevant agencies nationwide to discuss preparations for road safety during the New Year holiday. The meeting acknowledged preparations already made in major cities, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Nakhon Ratchasima. Intelligence units have been instructed to keep a close watch on risk groups in the country and abroad, particularly in key cities and the southern region. Security agencies in all provinces are to work together closely to ensure that all measures are carried out successfully in both border areas and major cities. They are to use technological resources to help oversee tourist destinations and other popular venues.

Relevant units are to study this year’s road accident statistics and adjust their plans accordingly.

The Ministry of Transport plans to inspect all types of public transport, the condition of roadways, lighting and traffic signs. Highway police are to facilitate traffic on key routes, while the Ministry of the Interior is to oversee routes in rural areas. The Ministry of Public Health is to ensure the readiness of clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities to minimize loss of life.

The Royal Thai Police has been instructed to strictly enforce road laws during the "Seven Dangerous Days", especially dealing with drink-driving, speeding and motorcyclists who don’t wear safety helmets in all areas. The police will continue to suppress reckless activities, raise awareness and seek cooperation from the people to monitor suspicious activities and help each other.

foreign trip to study this  matter looming

Only sure-fire way is to ban driving altogether; which I'm sure the dinosaurs have pondered... anything that'd completely crush the will of the people, eh what! :whistling:

They are to use technological resources to help oversee tourist destinations and other popular venues. And were did he plagiarize this statement from, what technological resources??????????????????????

Their chances of achieving that is about the same of having a fair and impartial elections in N. korea...

Why not strictly enforce all the year round not just on known dangerous days...!!!!!

Why? Why bother?

Until this government and more importantly, this police force realize that actions taken during these 'time limited' exercises, if they indeed make any difference to fatality numbers, need to be sustained throughout the year and not just for heavy road movement periods.

By sustained I mean (quoting the definition) "Maintained at length without interruption or weakening".

They have the laws available; get the relevant authorities trained up and start enforcing them.

Intelligence ? Prawit ? watches?

Maybe if they actually enforced road laws throughout the year it would make it easier to get reductions during new years.  Asking people to change habits for 4 days each year seems insane.

The government aimed to do a lot of things, as yet many to be fulfilled.... I'll ad this to the bottom of the list where it resides most of the year!

Same old BS every year, do they really expect one person in this country to take them seriously???

Here we go again.  Every year same same talk, nit noi accomplished.  Sheesh!

"Relevant units are to study this year’s road accident statistics and adjust their plans accordingly."

Translation - "We don't really have a clue, so you guys figure it out".

What useless slug of man.

This should be their bloody job every single day of the year. Absolute bunch of charlatans.

Might it be an idea to study last year's figures and do the adjustments now, rather than delay?

Ying Luck coming back to secure her assets she's crying about...

Sad and embarrassing they can’t get something that is so basic under control-fact is, they don’t care to fix it-too much work

As the poet, Robert Burns said “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley.” (The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.)

I'm not convinced this makes any difference to the daily toll.

Just the small matter of finding some intelligence ????
