Hua Hin's district chief and mayor joined a large entourage of tourist police and health officials who descended on a popular downtown market to hand out face masks and alcohol gel to guard against coronavirus.

The move came after the eighth person found to have the new deadly virus coming out of China was diagnosed in Hua Hin itself.

Chief Thanon Phanpheephat and mayor Noppaporn Wutthikun were out reassuring tourists and the public at  the Torung market yesterday in the downtown area of the popular seaside resort.

Good thing. In respect of the alcohol gel - alcohol alone would be enough ????

Reassuring....????right....

yesterday I went to Market Village in HH with my new girlfriend and we were wearing masks.

Most employees of various mall businesses were wearing masks.

the mall was busy but not as busy as a normal Sunday based upon it was too easy to find a scooter parking space.

I was looking at everyone on the sidewalks as we rode along for about 5 kms. i would say one in 200 people had masks.

more in the local food markets. friday and saturday night was very slow in bar areas especially for the chinese new year.

we are going to stock up on more water today.

some expats and "white" tourists are wearing masks and so are some chinese tourists that you see in groups.

Not just masks for the virus. Masks for the air. Hua Hin has joined the ranks of the most polluted cities in Thailand, with many days well over 50-100 PM 2.5, and often 125-200 AQI. The air there is horrrendously bad.

This thing is going to hit Thailand hard, and it is going to hurt coming after 6 years of major sabotage to the tourism industry, on the part of the administration, a hapless PM, and a dumb as you can get army led administration and TAT.

I mean , seriously, who (apart from Wuhan residents) is going to want to come here if your going to be in a potentially infected hot zone  ? And some fool in a uniform is still asking millions of Chinese to come

Whats happening to the new China town they are building?

I think we are likely to get knocked off by the air pollution rather than this virus. A bit cheeky to say you are welcome to visit, but we do insist you wear your mask. It's for your own good of course.

I think it's already been said that these surgical masks are useless as a protection.  However, tourists wearing them will help prevent an infected person from spreading it. Surgical masks are designed to prevent the spread of mouth borne diseases to others, not as a protection.

A lot of uncertainty about what type of mask to wear. Generally in healthcare we wear the N95 or N99 mask that will filter out down to 0.3 microns. These masks were initially instituted for use in Tuberculosis precautions. Any airborne disease we would get our N95 mask tested to be fitted properly to make a perfect seal, otherwise you are still vulnerable. I have now found this reddit thread with a P.H.D. claiming that with Coronavirus actually needs filtration down to 0.12 microns... Just providing this info for those of you to go research for yourself.

Betty H. Olson

Professor, Environmental Health, Science, and Policy
School of Social Ecology
Professor, Community & Environmental Medicine

PH.D., University of California, Berkeley is now reporting that you will need a "AntiViral" mask that will filter down to the 0.12 micron level. https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Flu/comments/esggkp/just_in_3m_air_pollution_masks_dont_protect/

Stupid district chief. These masks not help. Need the N95 masks minimum. The virus is so small that these cheap once not help at all. Just same as for pollution. There also need N95

Just send all Chinese tourists back to China, lock down all methods of travelling to Thailand by anyone even remotely capable of being infected, in other words protect your citizens at all costs, you have 100's of Billions of $$$$ in the kitty, you can ride this storm out better than most.

What a bunch of retards.

What happened to the old girlfriend ? Sick ?

New gf??

Biggest tid bit here.

Would love to know  more.  I'm going to make some assumptions here. I assume this is a salary position night shift mandatory.  Days off when boss takes a  side trip.

Comes with hot aunt or mom.

Did you "split" the last one or is this just a new addition on top [excuse the pun]?

this is the new girlfriend i met because i was awake really late during the POTY debacle. she texted me in the middle of the night and came over and has not left since. we just got back from a week in Koh Chang.

so i might be settling down. we are a really good match.

The masks are useless and provide no protection. They are of benefit only to the population if worn by the infected and who are coughing, sneezing or otherwise  drooling.

As per the current health protocol protective device consists of an N95 respirator and eye protection.

I agree, Hua Hin’s big problem is the air pollution from all the burning, the last few months we have been lucky if we had a few days below 100 often it is about 150 aqi which is extremely unhealthy

A humble relay from some eminent professors in Europe who declare that a facemask mainly prevents one from spreding the disease if a carrier.  Just a face mask, with no glasses, gloves, appropriate clothing is not fool proof agains this virus.

Furthermore, the virus is the most infectious when one is in the incubation stage i.e. with no apparent symptoms yet.

Maybe some of the eminent nobel price professors in the forum would contradict, but am plainly reporting what many EU media have reported, with absolutely no interest to hide the truth from the public. The ideal protection is the outfit shown below...

Yeah, all fine and dandy.

But have they got an N95 mask on the end of the hose which sends his air to him?

You did not understand that the only local wholesaler who sells these masks is part of his family;
it may even be his wife. :whistling:

I remember Hua Hin 15 years ago; it was a very quiet little town;
I went back there a few months ago;
one word: hell! :wacko:

it's also been said that one of the key ways to catch the virus is to touch nose or mouth after touching an infected surface

this is impossible to do this without removing a mask

so better than nothing.

Even if the Chinese stop coming, the various 'agencies' will issue proclamations of growth in the tourism sector this year.  That seems to be the way it works.

Yes I agree but that's a good thing as people don't always even know they're infected particularly in the earlier stages. Also possibly the flimsy masks can protect against infected spray from others. So better than nothing probably but whether non infected people really need to wear them is debatable.
