Chiang Mai’s air quality worst in the world

Chiang Mai’s air-quality ranking took a severe hit, with the city being named the worst in the world, followed by Mumbai, Kathmandu and Kolkata, the application Air Visual revealed on Saturday (February 29) as of 11.37am.

The application showed Chiang Mai’s average pollution at 193, with particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) at 137.8 micrograms per cubic metre.

According to the Air Quality Index, air quality between 0 to 50 is healthy, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 150 is unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and 301 to 500 is dangerous.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) said via its website that the air quality (as of 7am) in Bangkok and nearby provinces was at healthy levels, and would get better.

The PCD found PM2.5 at between 16 and 46 micrograms per cubic metre.

Glad to see the governments actions are having the desired effect along with CV 19.

Tourism tumbling but all under control. ????

I love the smell of PM2.5 first thing in the morning.

Time for some more big meetings, and maybe roll out a new app to monitor it.

Let the virus and AQI and value baht and state of Thailand's environment obliterate tourism and GDP in Thailand...

Money is the only thing they care about.

Sadly, even then, they would find a scapegoat to blame and still do nothing.

RIP Chiang Mai.

We hardly knew ye.

Especially if you were an older person you would have to give some serious thought to living somewhere else........

Not great where I live in San Kamphaeng AQI is 216, neighboring Sarapee is worse at 227...

All that was to be handled by cha cha in 7 days some months ago.   Somebody must have given him an amulet made of kryptonite.

The hills are alight.

This is a photo of a section of the Sri Lanna National Park forest taken yesterday early evening. The vast forest area that lies north of Chiang Mai city. It is difficult to judge the scale and perspective from the photo. The distance from the left fire to the fire on the right is several kms. What appear to be dark 'unlit' patches in between the obvious flames are also ablaze, but obscured from camera view by very heavy smoke.

This fire has been raging all day and all night for days. The smoke billowing up into the atmosphere no doubt descends on CM city and all around. I don't know how the fires started, but can tell you that they occur regularly every year.

Past time for Prayut to attend and blow some hot air and make more empty promises.

But no, even that won't happen. He's too wrapped up in trying to figure out how he'll "attack" the protestors who finally figured out he's all hot air and decided to do something about it.

About time Prayut gives the order for it all to be sorted in seven days

Most fires started by these storms that Thai Met bureau keep telling us that are here. Funny that all the weather radars show no storm activity at all across all of Thailand.

Again, the government says the rest of the world is lying.

It will never be resolved until people that care about the country are running it

In April last year I only had one comment about these fires and it was from a Singaporian visiting rellies along the way . This was that week last year , more to come in 4 weeks time I suspect.

That means Thai Met Bureau is another puppet ministry.

Been once 6 years ago pollution was horrendous then cans imagine it now. Was like being in a city on it’s last breath. Doubt I will ever return.

If the CV doesn't get you, the PM2.5 most certainly will.

And meanwhile, because of the CV, there are hardly any N95 masks available in Thailand to protect people when outside from the PM2.5.\

Same situation in the U.S., shortages all around, but at least, the air most places in the U.S. can't be cut with a knife like it can be here in Thailand.

It's the woman's fault. She's a Lanna girl.

There you go Thailand - Number 1 at last. I thought if you kept at it you would become number 1 eventually. Now lets get number 1 with the dirtiest beaches, countryside, etc. I am sure you can if you keep going. It's only a matter of time.

Pattaya - after walking about 7km earlier in the week I used a tissue in my nostrils (not blowing), the tissue was covered in dark black soot almost like you would find in a chimney - this is what we are breathing into our lungs

Take a tissue and wipe a few surfaces in your living area after you have had the windows open and you will find the same thing

This is what we are breathing in folks and is causing serious coughs and other health issues.

Nobody wants to take a vacation were they need to constantly wear face masks - why would they.

Well, at least it's something to take everyone's mind off of the coronavirus!  :ninja:

Thailand just has SO MANY things to offer... it's truly an "amazing" place...

Sure as hell makes the 2 million baht we got for our place in Saraphi in 2013 one of the best 'fire sales' (sold to the manager of Boon Rawd Brewery) ever by a farang in CM. Meantime at our little 100 year old wooden bungalow somewhere on a hill in NE Oz, you can see for thirty miles today (and usually every day) and the air is so clean I wish I could bottle some and donate it to those less fortunate expats and their families who are still forced to live there. We won't be going back to LOS (sadly) as I don't what a second bout of laryngeal cancer.

I wonder if there are any CM local government officers who are actually ashamed to see the sun and blue sky obliterated in a grey haze?  I only wish there was some high up like Big Joke was, who would actually get off his butt and enforce a cessation of these fires, year in and year out.

Local farmers need to be educated on how to manage their crops without burning the residues - or be flung in jail. And so should the local government officers.

It is against the law to burn the residue, the farmers know it, those who control stuff know it, but the practice carries on regardless.

No matter what problems LOS has, nobody fixes anything.
