Chiang Mai governor admits he is powerless to stop Songkran water war - but expects events to be cancelled

The Chiang Mai governor told a meeting of tourism personnel that he couldn't stop people playing water fights during Songkran despite fears that it could lead to the spread of the coronavirus.

But he has urged restraint and hopes that people will be sensible and protect themselves from infection.

Charoenrit Sanguansat appeared alongside region 5 police commander Pol Lt-Gen Prajuap Wongsuk at city hall in the northern Thai city.

He said he couldn't stop Songkran and called it a cultural festival that has existed for years.

It was right and proper that cultural aspects of the event would take place such as making merit and listening to monks talking about Buddhist teachings.

But he urged people to think about wearing masks, having sanitizing gel on hand and maintaining cleanliness.

He expected large scale events to be cancelled or reduced and planned to contact department stores with that in mind.

Regarding water fights he said that was not part of the cultural side of Songkran.

If people wanted to throw water over each other that was up to them, he couldn't stop it.

He urged people to be sensible but reckoned that few would want to celebrate like that anyway given the Covid-19 situation.

  • Same with the burning, if they want to burn , he can't stop it. Please resign!

  • if i want to get wet i will go for swim or take a shower , i stay away from these places to avoid this sort of thing .

  • Yeah, I never knew Chiang Mai had a leader. There's no evidence of leadership, that's for sure.

He is correct, but in the past it was not celebrated in the moronic way it is today.

Well he could threaten to turn off all the mains water during the day.

He needs to take a leaf out of our illustrious leader's book.

If the PM can invent 'charges'-  like 'eating a sandwich with political intent', I'm sure the Chiang Mai governor can do the same.

Perhaps 'wasting water, threatening national security'. I'm sure the possibilities are endless - as could be the potential fine and prison time, if he's creative enough.

Would he be expecting the same level of people being sensible that we witness on the roads?

Yeah, but only when it suits him.

Good idea. But how many days.

Always interesting living in this parallel universe.

Reminds me of Officer Savage on NTNON

"Loitering with intent to use a zebra crossing"

"Being in possession of fuzzy black hair and large lips"

The possibilities in Thailand are endless!

We're singing from the same hymn sheet here. Also in that same sketch:

"Walking with an offensive wife."

So why is he in that job?? Might as well have no one there. Saves money too.

Just a muppet this year, but expecting to advance to a puppet within a year or so.

first thing he could do would to ban the setting up of vendor stalls along the moat. ban the sale of water toys. drain the swamp, i mean moat.

What does the governor of Chiang Mai actually do other than receiving money what does the guy do TIT

How much money would you and your wealthy friends lose if Songkran was banned ???

Pretty much sums up the publics response to the ruling authorities Thailand....

Laws or not....everyone just does what they want.....

What is the army doing April ? Put them to work and shoot a couple of giant water pistol guys to make an example.

That's the only way to get attention

He chairs various committees & meetings, with lavish buffets, at swanky hotels, where they mull how to monitor the air pollution in the province.  That's pretty much a full time job ????

is this the same guy who is telling us that he is not aware of air pollution in his city Chiang Mai ?

And isn't that great!!

One of the attractions of the kingdom. Stand up on your own two feet, take responsibility, and live!

Something many people haven't done since birth back in the old country. Great feeling this breaking of the shackles and being able to live freely.
