Buriram: Thai man with no money steals a police pick-up to get home while officers visit a bank

There was a right kerfuffle at Satuk police station in Buriram province after someone stole a police pick-up while two officers were visiting a bank.

BBQ banana seller Phanida, 28, said that she often saw the vehicle parked outside a bank.

She saw a man who walked around the car a couple of times then got in and drove off. She thought he must be a plain clothes police officer.

He headed off towards two intersections going through red lights on the way.

Then the two policemen came out of the bank and said: "Eh!? Where's our pick-up".

"It's been driven off over there," said Phanida pointing in the direction of the intersections. The penny dropped that the man was not a policeman.

Frantic radio calls were made and the thief was soon apprehended at a checkpoint 4 kilometers away.

Chitchai, 31, was found to have no drugs or alcohol in his system - he just wanted to get home to Khao Din Neua sub-district, Ban Kruay 100 kilometers away.

Chitchai was pictured on the floor at Satuk police station explaining himself.

He said that he had gone to look for work in Mahasarakham but found nothing. Having no money to get home police there took pity on him and gave him 140 baht but this was only enough to get him to Satuk.

Wondering what to do next he was wandering about and saw the police car with its lights flashing and no one inside.

He opened the door and it was lovely and cool in there - he decided to sit down and cool off.

Then he thought to himself: "This vehicle will get me home!"

He drove off and was stopped at the checkpoint as he tried to get back home.

No charges - as yet - were mentioned in the Thai Rath account.

When you want to get home you want to get home.

Love it, well done to that man - the dumb cops who left the keys in should be up in front of big chief to explain

Just shows the sad economic situation.  He just wanted to get home.

I love Thailand. Every day there is a classic news story involving stupidity from everyone involved that makes you choke on your coffee.

Maybe they cannot bring charges if the keystones left the keys in the ignition ?

This is a beautiful example of logical reasoning, succinct and well thought out. Isn't Thailand in need of some ministers right now?

Keys left in with engine running to keep AC cooling, red lights flashing.......????

For their Stupid mistake of leaving the Keys in the car and the car running with the ac on , they should've taken the poor man to his Home .

Sadly, they Don’t need it for actions like this.

Like few thousand others,

TWOCking. Taking without consent.

It's irrelevant that the keys may or may not have been left in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken without the owner's consent.

I love Thailand, too. In the US they'd have thrown him on the ground, trussed him up with handcuffs, banged his head on the door seal putting him in a vehicle, lock him up and put him in front of a judge the next day.  The Thais are just more accepting of stupidity...

It's really a difference in training. Thai police are not stuck into the aggressive assertiveness training courses.
