Hotels Starting New Phase of Employee Terminations

Recommended Posts

Several big name hotels are starting phase 2 of employee terminations. One large hotel terminated 50-100 employees today. Basically, the hotels don't have sufficient guests mid-week. On weekends and public holidays, Thai guests arrive, but even with room rates heavily discounted, hotels are below 70% capacity, at those times. Pattaya hotels are realizing that it will be years before the occupancy and revenue returns to a previous rates.

See here for more forecasts:

There's the solution.  The Thai government should declare every day a public holiday.  ????

For everyone who isn't a government employee, every day will be a public holiday ....... without pay.

That's the impression I have got, initially when the beaches reopened there was an understandable rush for a beach weekend with the family. The first holiday looked the busiest but each one since appeared to attract lower numbers. It could be there is a slow realisation that job losses are becoming more widespread and they need to be a bit more cautious with their spending just in case.

The average Thai can't afford to go on holiday and stay in typical western tourist style hotels and resorts. The ones that can won't frequent crappy bars with scantily clad girls and other genders touting for business on the street. They tend to visit with family and close friend's, gathering on the beaches and decent Thai restaurants to dine out at. Mostly Bangkokian's anyway, can't see Isaan folk queuing up for discounted hotels that cost a week's pay for just one night's stay.

Not sure the point you're making...that Bangkok Thais with money to spend don't come to Pattaya...try to get a parking space at Pan Pan Restaurant in Jomtien on the weekends. You can't because it's full of expensive European cars with Bangkok plates. There is a lot more to Pattaya, and the surrounding area, than "crappy bars," which mainly appeal to the Western and Indian markets in the first place.

I lived there for 4 years and that's just my point. Many commentator's think only of the Western style bar scene and bemoan the demise of their favoured hangouts. Family gatherings and eating out as opposed to bar crawling.

It probably wouldn't affect their productivity either, lol!

I have been to Soi 6 twice in the last 3 weeks. The first time I was surprised by the number of bars open. Yesterday it seemed a lot have closed. Maybe they opened expecting customers and have realized not going to happen quickly.

Until 9pm 39 baht for a small Chang on walking street here in Pattaya. LK Metro afternoon all small beers are 44 baht at 2 bars. Some Soi Buak hau bars have the big Leo and Chang at 65B at all hours. Very thin profit margins.

Some beach road bar staff have told me they are now paid 100 baht a day, one third of their regular salary. The only way they survive is on tips and companion drinks.

And some places have work-sharing with staff working 10 or 15 days per month. One that used to have 5 on the day shift now only has 2.

Drastic times.
