“Elephant ticket”: Opposition MP accuses police officers of paying bribes for promotions

A leading and controversial Thai opposition politician has weighed into the debate about patronage and favors in the Royal Thai Police saying it has continued throughout the time of the NCPO to the present day.

He has even named a senior Thai policeman in the so-called ‘elephant ticket’, a list of officers who are allegedly guaranteed promotion after paying bribes. The term ‘elephant ticket’ in Thai was trending on Twitter over the weekend.

Move Forward party list MP Rangsiman Rome was contributing to the debate over police transfers.

After the 2014 coup DMP Prawit Wongsuwan took over the portfolio of the police and the patronage and favors including the buying and selling of positions continued, he said.

Then in more recent times PM Prayuth Chan-ocha took over the responsibility for the RTP.

But it is still a mess, perhaps even worse so.

Wrongdoing still goes unpunished with casino bosses and drug lords getting their way.

Rome even suggested that police bow and scrape to godfathers and the mob and that they are not defenders of the people but their destroyers.

Into this row he implicated Pol Lt-Gen Torsak Sukhawimol the commander of the central investigation unit.

He is the very well connected younger brother of Air Chief Marshall Sathitpong Sukhawimol the Lord Chamberlain.

The BBC asked the general to comment on the politician's allegations but he was evasive saying that he was at a merit ceremony and reporters should address their questions elsewhere.

in english (and not on thai bbc), much more and much earlier, on 19.02, was reported elsewhere

https://www.thaienquirer.com/24498/rangsiman-rome-presents-evidence-of-elephant-ticket-police-corruption

and even now this elephant in the room

https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2021/02/20/govt-seeks-to-slap-mp-with-royal-insult-charge-for-debate-expose/

which all be summarised - thai royal police is mafia, taking orders through the command chain from those shadows above them.

rangsiman presented documents going back 10 years, but this practice was going on always, from the beginning of the cold war and phibun dictatorship. That's beyond censure debate. That's only what was leaked to him by some disgruntled policemen.

there is also series of comments on thai political prisoners, within days there would be more materials published in english from international commentators.

in thai on social media under #ตั๋วช้าง

and on 23.2 at 5pm protest at ratchaprasong

The RTP is listed by the UN as  'A Criminal Organisation'; not that we need telling as it's widly known both inside and outside of the country.

Likelyhood of change........ZERO !

"A senior government official on Saturday said he will file royal defamation charges against an opposition MP who highlighted police corruption"

I don't know if its the same in America, but in the UK..... and any country that follows the Westminster system.---You can not be sued for anything that is said in Parliament.

After the 2014 coup DMP Prawit Wongsuwan took over the portfolio of the police and the patronage and favours including the buying and selling of positions continued, he said.

The Tik Tok & commode portfolio has grown very nicely  ????

Nice to see a politician with the balls to stand up and bring this out into the open arena, confirming what most citizens already knew.

Just Google Royal Thai Police, find the wikipedia entry then scroll down to the bit called criticisms ???????? makes for very interesting reading ????????????

Well it is a pyramid, and payments flow upwards.

And just to be clear, the RTP is not the only government agency which employs this time-honored tradition of promoting on "merit". (Merit = cash money)

I think the rep. is in hot water because he published lists of names.

And this is why Big Joke was able to jump the promotion queue.

Age old tradition. I am surprised anyone is surprised

They need a Thai version of Frank Serpico to bring to light the darkness of this corruption.

Don't worry. His CV will need to be approved by the Senate for authenticity.

the most interesting part of the story is how the officers get the money for the bribe: they loan it from "influential figures". now you can piece together the rest...
